The British Open Speedgolf Championships is a unique event in the British Golfing calendar where participants win with a combination of fast rounds as well as golf performance; since golf strokes plus time are combined for a Speedgolf Score. It is a golf tournament that encapsulates the very essence of sport.
The event got underway after a minute’s silence in reverence to the death of Queen Elizabeth 11 (on both days of the competition).
Players use up to 7 clubs, a strategic decision to take on board weight, comfort, and shot-making creatively. Some players just took one club. Styles of play also vary, some prefer longer drives and others are more cautious to keep the ball on the fairway; whatever works to save the player the most time! Practice swings and other time-consuming rituals are largely abandoned but in doing so many find a rhythm to their game that actually improves their golf performance.
The concept of Speedgolf is simple, to introduce a more athletic element to the game which also enhances fitness, health, and wellbeing.
This year’s British Open Speedgolf title went to Irishman and former World Champion, Rob Hogan whose Speedgolf Score (Time + Strokes) was the lowest over the two days of competition. He was fresh from a win earlier this week at the Irish Speedgolf Open.
