Enjoy hearing the truth about coins. Lately, I've seen articles claiming these 43 & 44 wrong planchets are worth up to 10 million dollars. Sensational miss information is a click away! Thanks for your honesty.

Out metal detecting in the Arizona desert last winter in the area where Patton was training his desert troops I found 2 steel pennies. One is still readable as a 1943S and more than likely dropped by a WWII service member.

There were still a lot of steel cents around in 1949 when I started collecting coins. Like most people I didn't like them since they were often confused with dimes. As a paperboy my customers frequently made this "mistake" when they were paying me. Nevertheless I added a dozen or so of them to my collection and I still have them. It was also my good fortune to have a widow as a customer who often paid her weekly bill out of her late husband's coin collection. I still have most of those also. I stopped collecting for a number of years and just resumed within the last 5 years. It's amazing how this once sedate little hobby has degenerated into a hustle. Daniel is a rarity compared to these characters you see on TV.

I got taken for a whopping $6 on a set of replated P,D,S steel cents. Then I unknowingly sold them as UNC for $3. When I finally found out why they looked so odd, I felt bad that I had inadvertently ripped someone off for $2.97 We won't be making that mistake again. I've learned a lot since then 😊

It's just a cent I always thought very little about the steel cent that even if it were a proof I'd only buy it for 35 cents back in the 70's and 80's until I got a few nice 43's

Awesome video, and thanks for sharing, Daniel. I think this is one of your best videos at explaining the features of the coin, like the line around the head and hair. I was holding onto a few 43s and other pennies to ask that same question. Is it doubling? Thank you for answering and all the great information you provide to make the hobby more enjoyable.

If it allows you to connect using USB directly to your computer, that really saves time and Windows Camera will run things so you can shoot with a mouse click. My Elikliv allows this and the lights are USB powered, so no batteries or SD cards, very convenient.

Good video. Keeping it real. I was gifted an MS 66 `43 D in PCSG years ago. Then, it was valued at about $30. Now it looks to have doubled in value so that`s cool. That`s the fun part of the hobby. More often than not, over time your collection will go up in value so you probably won`t lose money by holding on to them for a while. But, adjusting for inflation, etc one might say, well you`re breaking even actually. Whatever. If nothing else your heirs will reap the benefits of your collection and will love you all the more. ;-)

Damn most coin apps. Had an experience just last week. A patron of my friend's pub brought me a 1955 double die Lincoln. Or so he was sure. Actually a nice AU "Poor Man's" DDO, with just a hint of strike doubling. Gave him the bad news, he roundly rejected it. Called me a rip-off. So I sent him down the street to the "Coin Geek" and wished him well. I would have offered him $10 for it, nice specimen with the strike doubling.

coins manufactured before 1945 would have trace radioactive isotopes that coins made before 1945 would not. Only along the surface would there be the isotopes from nuclear weapons testing. . internally would be the same crystal structure as was the day it was minted. environment be darned unless contaminants etc allows for exposire internally but only in specific spots. Anyways. Pre 1945's will actually get more valuable if they can be tested for pre 1945 radioactive isotopes
@CoinHELPu

No coin is going to have radioactive isotopes from the US Mint and nor would it add value. There where some silver dimes that were irridiated but and encased, but that is all.

HAHA the radiation is not from the mint. The radiation is from weapons testing in the 50s and 60s. Metal cast prior to the tests wouldn't have the same trace isotopes of Cesium, Potassium, and others. There is a whole class of traded metal called "Low-Background-Steel." that's sought after for detection of black body radiation with more ease without the trace radiation sources in the material. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-background_steel
