The Real 4 Speed Conversion Project for Brompton.
Tried a lot of combinations for a 4-speed conversion to work as smooth as anybody wants it be for our regular Bromptons, we found a solution that actually works and this is by using RIdea Brompton Levers with 4 speed shifter, combined it with Ridea tensioner, Ridea pulley and most important with this convertion is the Ridea Chain Pusher.

Please have a look at your rear triangle if you have the hole near the pulley, if you do then it is possible but you will also need a new set of wheelset that can carry 4-5 speed.

Great Video: Can you mention if this can be done with my current 6 speed C-Line? I want to switch out the Sturmey Archer hub and covert to a lighter 4 speed setup like the P line and T Line. Can I get advice for that? Would a completely new hub and derailleur be lighter? Thanks!

Hi Scott, that is the main reason why we are shifting to an external gears, SA setup in C line is way too heavy, around 1.4 kg for the rear wheel alone, parallelogram system can help you convert your C line to a P line setup, we can further help you out if you message us in our Facebook account so we can discuss this further, Thanks!

If you are changing out the wheels anyway why not try ruhm or liteplus 7sp external, a bit heavier than 4 but better range?

You can always change it and make it more ridable to your preference, like replacing the biggest cog with a bigger cog for hills.

why didnt consider use shimano cogs ? have tried minimods not as good as Shimano ones.

Hi Joseph, we tried Shimano and the main issue is the 11t, normally it comes with the front tip that you need grind and that results the smallest cogs to be brittle, Minimods are great, having it in unibody made a huge difference in the integrity of the smallest cog and it is made for Brompton so the spacing are perfect!

Will this work in conjunction with the 3spd hub on my 6Spd SL. This should give me 12 gears I believe? Would it give me the same range? I would love the ability to maintain cadence better between gear changes. Most relatively fit cyclists are not too worried about the extra weight of hub gears - the ratios are more important. If you carry a couple of bottles of water for a long ride that is 1Kg; shopping can be up to 5kg :D

Yes Colin, you can apply this to your 6-speed setup, you are correct saying it will give you 12 gears, external Minimods X4 cogs is 11-13-17-21

What type of chain should we use, 11 or 12 speed chain for the 12 speed setup? Do we also need to change the shifter cable? Planning on a 12 speed project with existing 6sp hub and ridea tensioner.

Hello! Just got T line. After 11 years with six speed. The freewheel clicking is making me nuts! Used to the silence. Is ridea rear 4 hub quieter than stock T? Can’t find sample vid on KZbin. Thanks from San Francisco for your awesome vids!!

Thanks Brian, the loud clicking noise is what most of the guys wants but you want the opposite, Ridea hubs have a loud freewheel noise as well, not sure how to help you as we have not installed a less louder noise than the original T line hub, This can be quietened down by adding grease into the ratchets in the hub shell. This will deaden the vibration and quieten the hub, but please note if you add too much grease or use thick grease this can cause the pawls to not engage as well.

It seems that lots of fancy hubs are clicky these days due to better springs on the pawls and more of them (so stronger engagement when you put the power down)... like four or more rather than two or three. Another advantage is that the louder sound when freewheeling lets pedestrians, dogs, etc. know that you are nearby, so it can often be used before needing to ring the bell.

Pack your freehub with grease, noise eliminated. It will be silent. Ignore the poo-pooers. I packed Shimano Winner Pros with a Phil Wood grease injector for years and never one issue.

@@gblan Hey! Brought it into loofah Brompton dealer. They opened it up and said was NO grease. He added a bunch. It’s now quieter than my original six speed. Stealth life is back! Also said there was no grease on stem. He added and now ZERO stem creak. (Which was an annoying) Now love the bike 100%!!!

The best solution for a 4 speed external, fit perfectly with Ridea wheelset but works as good in non Ridea hubs.

You might see a T line upgrading to 7 gears in the near future which will be the same as P line.

i have whelset trispoke with 4gear max, 11 14 17 21. and using shifter dcch that goes to 7 speed. whn im switching from 17 to 21 i need to click twice and that goes also on the opposite 21 to 17. and to other gear are normal 1x click.. is there anyway that it can work normaly 1x click on every switching gears? is the 7speed shifter not compatible enough with 4 gears?

I wish we could help you out but we have never used DCCH RD yet, why dont you ask the supplier directly about the issue, im sure they will be able to help you out.

Have you considered changing to a high quality friction shift lever, i.e. non-indexed? You should get decent 'feel' of each gear shift and not have to worry about messed up indexing. A good quality shifter should make sure that there's no drifting once in a particular gear.

Because it is not a 4 speed Brompton set up, he is using a 2/3 speed that is forced to have 4 speed by other shops and this is constantly giving him shifting problems, so we use Ridea 4 speed kit and ever since he never had issues.

We know Brompton are really good for commuting but for us we modify and upgrade to be able to ride together with road bikes and that is the challenge, you can make your Brompton as fast as RB and still have the best fold and convenience to go on public transport and with a proper parts you will be able if that is your goal but if not we respect you guys as we know we use our Bromptons in different ways.

Also handy for taking on trips by car, plane, train, etc. I am going to Austria for a conference for a week and will take mine with me for a bit of opportunistic touring. It fits in my regular checked luggage allowance, so is easy and free.
