This week on Family Matters With Jo Frost, Jo is talking to one family which seemed to double in size overnight and another family where the mum was so protective over her son that the dad hasn’t been able to bond with him.
Family conflicts are usually kept behind closed doors - until now. Fresh from her role in Supernanny, Jo Frost brings her experience to a new talk show format.
Real Families brings you stories of modern day family life from around the world through the eyes of children, parents, and parenting experts.

Hey just calling you out on this one. If you think so I doubt you have ever known a true narcissist. He's not one. These two adults might understand the other more if they walked in each others shoes for 3 months..it is not easy for either of them and the kids are stuck in the middle of it, I think the main issue is wider family support because there are fractures in the entire family unit. People completely miss the point that despite what we think, those kids need their connection to their natural parents and they need to believe in their parents to be validated...but Jo got it....for destroy dad for instance and you also destroy a great part of those kids egos - they love him and he is part of them. So calling dad a narcissist also condemns the children - and they'd dislike you for it absolutely. Yes we, the KZbin public, want him to do better, but be realistic with what mountain needs to be climbed recovering after being kicked out from the family home and family life by his partner (for unsaid reasons) - Can you even imagine what that might feel like? 1 day out of 7 you get to live your family life while 6 out of 7 you're alone and just work...and all that effort results in a handful of loose change....why, it might just drive one to drink and we see often that it does...it is a traumatic hopeless place. But this is real life not fairyland where stories involve people who have never encountered real struggle and hardship. Have a heart, and watch the labeling - for it might hurt people.

Lee’s mom is an enabler. She is justifying her son not spending quality time his kids. 2 hours once a week is NOT being a parent!!!!!! Lee needs to step up & spend all day with his kids If the 5 kids want to sleep over at daddy’s. Then they should go over Saturday evening. Then he can do bedtime with all 5 kids & then return the kids home after dinner on the Sunday... That’s a full 24 hours with them & they get a sleep over Also it’s not the moms responsibility to provide a place for dad to spend time with HIS kids. Dad can go out after work the rest of the week... but he needs to give his kids 1 Full day per week

Little update for you all. The kids are now 18, 16, 13, 12 and 10 now. Bradlee just got his first A* in his GCSE’s. Lee didn’t stick to what we agreed on the show. He did for the first two weeks, then slipped back to his old ways. He has now got his own house and has Poppy every other weekend and some of the others If they choose to go which isn’t very often because they all like to do their own thing now. I let go of my anger towards Lee and got on with being the best Mum I could be. Lee and I are in a good place now we can communicate like adults and are friendly with each other. With regards to why I had 5 kids with him… I was told I couldn’t conceive and wouldn’t be able to have children. I was born to be a Mum I love being a Mum. I wanted to make my marriage work, I wanted to raise my children with Mum and Dad at home…. It took me a while and I had to build the confidence to end it but I knew it was the right thing to do for them. I have no regrets. I’ve come to terms with the fact that Lee will never be the Dad I want him to be but it’s not about what I want it’s about what the kids want so I stay focussed on that. Finally for the comments about me working…… YES I was working when all 5 children were born so although Lee was working 6 days a week so was I then I was doing EVERYTHING for the home, the children and Lee when I would get home from work. I only stopped working when I couldn’t afford the childcare bill on my own.

Used him? Idiot. That would require that she got something out of him. I don't think she'd get anything from him except excuses. And once she's broken up with him, him going to the hospital is not her problem. She's got five kids to take care of. No, she shouldn't have slapped him like that, but seeing their father constantly drunk from the pub isn't healthy, either. The woman is exhausted and needs some break time for herself.

It may really help to coach him on how to play with them, be with them whole heartedly.. it needs to be taught , esply because the dad's have grown up without their own dad's being with them. You could say that about any broken family. You seem to blame the mother who does everything with and for her children! Most normal humans expect the Father to be involved with his own children's care! He's obviously a Mama's boy who resents having the responsibility for his OWN five children. If you think that money can take the place of time with your Dad I sincerely hope you don't ever have children for their sake.

Message to Lee: My own step Dad also took me to bars on the weekends when he was together with my Mum. I remember all the times he passed out like a starfish face down on the bed. I remember him waking up 1pm the next day because was hungover. When my Mum finally kicked him out, he would still take me out & where to? Bars. When I went on holiday with him in 1 week he drank several bottles of wine, vodka & beer enough to fill 5 trash bags. I stopped talking to him completely a few years ago when I’d just met my now husband because I realised what a real man is. Cutting him out of my life when I realised he chose alcohol over me. My husband today also likes to have a drink now & then but he’ll still be awake with my son at 630am no matter how much he’s drunk the night before. On the weekends to give me a break he takes our son out from 8am to 12pm. I don’t even have to ask, he just does it. No alcohol or bars involved. You can do better. Stop making excuses. If you’re an irresponsible father who doesn’t actually want to be a father because drinking is more fun, then own up to it.

This is why I chose not to have kids with my X-husband. I could see early on that he was not ready to be a father and probably would have made my life a living nightmare if we had had kids. What I don’t understand is why they kept having kids, since my guess is that he was probably like this from the beginning…. Surely, he didn’t change from the perfect Dad to the non-existent Dad overnight.

I admire them for having the courage to come on TV to get help but boy... The first things that woman says makes me mad... She says the house is run by tiny people and she has no say in anything. Woman, it was you who decided to have kids, a lot of them on top of it. And now you gave up. I never understood people, who are over their heads with their children and decide having even more is a good idea. You have a tuff time with two, stay with two. Don't get other three. Geez. Specially with that donkey as a father. Sorry, but why did they have children at all? If he doesn't give a sh** about his own kids, why having so many children with him? Why? He doesn't value his children at all. (and they seem like fun little fellas, so mom did something right) Looks to me like a mommys boy on top being a deadbeat. (Don't give any mother in law a voice on your life. When they get to much say, they always take a side instead being part of the solucion).

I don’t agree that he gets to help make any decisions…kids’ mom needs to make the rules and tell Lee what the rules are. They are blessed to have 5 kids, but after 2 or 3 kids, do these guys not realize how stressful and expensive 3 are, before adding 2 more? Then maybe he wouldn’t have to work 6 days & life could be simpler/manageable. It’s too late now, but maybe other folks could learn that with additional child the family dynamic changes. 😢😢 Bless this mama.

Is sad to see both families trying to find a solution and the husband who is a lovely man has not realized that he has created this big family and now he has to pull himself up and stop going to the pub to have some beer with his mates. Young people needs to realize that your freedom ends when you have a child and that is the sad reality. If you have a low salary is even worst both of them ends up working. I had two kids one after another with a husband who did help and let me tell you that I did not even have time to have a mug of water because we used to spend the spare time with talking reading etc etc and take them to the park every day after work. I am so glad my two grow up children decided not to have children because they remember their childhood and all we did for them to brig them proper. Fortunately many couples now a days are not having kids for various reasons includes the big responsibility and the overcrowded planet.
