In my neck of the woods, everything out to the city's main in the center of the street is the customer's responsibility. Cutting up concrete city streets gets spendy right quick. So the goal is to luck out and only have to replace the main from the house to the curb. But on the potable side, the city owns and maintains up to the disconnect at the edge of the right-of-way. Working in multiple jurisdictions and with multiple utilities can be quite the challenge knowing who has to do what where. But dang, you'd better know before you even step foot out of the truck. (I cleaned up my use of colorful metaphors because I know that Roger has such virtuous virgin ears.)

It never hurt my feelings if the city was responsible for the backup that caused the homeowner to have a blockage. This plumbing contractor failed this homeowner by not relaying accurate info to the homeowner. I'm lucky that the master plumber I worked for was available and had my back in any and all jobs I did. That’s exactly what union county does as well. I used to work for a company called ease plumbing out of union county. The farthest I’ve seen is when there’s a public sidewalk which is an easement and they’ll go to the other side of it. So if the issue was right past that sidewalk, I never would have thought to call the city. That’s the only thing on his side. Everything else he does is wrong on every level. I’ve been cussed out by customers and gc’s. It’s a different dynamic but I just walk away and say as soon as you’re willing to be civil I’ll come back and talk. I’ve been badmouthed and it sucks because sometimes you have to take it. I don’t think the homeowner or the main city guy acted right either. Don’t yell back just tell him to leave until he calms down. Ignoring the viral aspect of this, this guy just shot himself in the foot. I’ve worked in a small town and a city and it pays to have good relationships with the city. For all work he does there in the future that involves the city, his name is mud. On top of that I don’t know how he has a successful business in the first place if he’s this bad at controlling emotions.

It’s an easy mistake to make but this particular county in NC does have some weird rules.

The city/county should of threatened that guy if he didn't shut his mouth they would start failing his inspections. And he probably wasted more than $6,000 standing there arguing I'd never work for a guy like that.

I bet that would have shut him up quick. Never good to piss off an inspector as they can make your life a living hell.

I don't think they were the inspectors were they? Plus you're no better than that guy if you fail an inspection that doesn't deserve to be failed.

How are you gonna correct one wrong with another wrong? If it passes, it passes. You'd be just as corrupt as him if you went about it like that

As a journeyman plumber in Kentucky, we have to be in close coordination with MSD in situations like this.

I imagine that whenever that plumber pulls permits in that town/county again, he's going to get the extra stink eye inspection... - He's not doing himself any favors by pissing off the people that can shut him down / slow walk everything he does from now on.

I do drains in Baltimore. We run them all the way to the city main . If that don’t work we tell them call the city and let me do a cam inspection to identify any issues such as bellies and breaks
