This is an old Irish standard. In narrowest terms, it's the story of a man who struggles to overcome poverty, violence, bigotry and the theft of his belongings - all in the search of a better life unavailable to him at home. More broadly speaking, it is the story of the Irish people in microcosm. I have heard a number of different arrangements of this song. This is amongst the best. It is incredibly difficult to pull off.
