Dagens24 Nailed it he did. Any theological debate between fundamentalists and moderates will be won by the fundamentalists because they are scriptural literalists. It doesn't get more theologically pure than that. So, if the moderates are in control of a religion, then it is because they have "hijacked" the religion from the fundamentalists. In other words, the moderates have enough sense to ignore the bad and/or outdated ideas. The next logical step is to drop religion and faith altogether and recognize it for the superstition and mythology that it really is.

Ricardo Ellison No. It's not clear at all. Ancient peoples actually did believe the supernatural myths and fables regarding things such as a creator god, a 'fallen' mankind, the existence of an afterlife, the existence of supernatural beings like, talking serpents, dragons, unicorns, satyrs, giants, etc (all in the Bible). It's the moderates that will claim it's merely metaphorical in order to justify such nonsensical beliefs.
@cyber151
@cyber151 9 жыл бұрын
Metaphore? Do you know what that word means. Okay, lets look at the jewish text for a moment, the god of the jews are worshipped by christians and they believe that at one point, god did put down 613 total commandments, into the old testament. Two of them we shall review. Honor the sabbath day, keep it holy. Slay those who break the sabbath. Now, you think its a metaphore, kinda a way to scare people into keeping the sabbath, they shouldnt literally kill people, despite the clear instruction....the book of Numbers. A man, is gathering sticks on the sabbath. Probably for firewood, deserts are real cold at night. The crowd seizes him. They bring him to the jewish courts and to moses. Moses 'conveigns' with 'god'. Then orders the man killed, FOR BREAKING THE SABBATH. Quote: and they stoned the man with stones, until he had died, as the LORD had commanded Moses. no no numb nuts. Not metaphore. Literal. You like all who cry metaphore, havent read these books, cover to cover, once in your life. That and that alone, is what you made clear.

David Riggs ya i like redacting the crazy and literal translations but it doesnt mean the entire scripture is full of nonsense. Many early religious types were also philosophers asking the important question "what is the right thing to do". Many of the things attributed to Jesus or to christian faith are good things to live by like love your neighbor, be thy brother's keeper, help the poor and less fortunate etc etc. Its just horrible to see faithful people stick to the more horrible and crazy aspects of faith than its virtues. Pope Francis and his ilk are what i believe are putting a proper empathizes on their respective beliefs. Problem with religion is Dogma aka the false belief that the bible or the koran is infallible and not written by man but of a higher authority like an infallible god. Even if divinely inspired it was still translated and written down by fucking humans who could probably only understand a minor fraction of what an infallible begin could say to them. Dogma and the adherence to it impedes the progress of the faithful to pursue spiritual fulfillment which i believe comes about when you do what you truly believe is good acts in your life. It's easier to lie to yourself that gays or whatever are hediious begins worthy of your condemnation and hatred but eventually if you have a conscientious and a brain you will realize it was WRONG then regret it. Dogma comes from a fear of being wrong in your actions telling yourself God an infallible all knowing begin approves to stop yourself from questioning your own actions.

As a public defender? Public Defenders have so much case work they can't even meet with clients and have only a couple minutes to deal with each client. This is because Conservatives in the 90's gutted funding to public defenders because of several reason 1) it allowed poor women to divorce more easily 2) it allowed people to get more money from welfare ballooning the welfare state and 3) It allowed migrant workers to sue their employers for not paying them. So well good luck.

Of course homosexuality is illegal in our lands, but that is mainstream normal thing. It is not an issue. It not gonna happen to have a gay club in Saudi Arabia. It is never gonna happen. First off I am NOT a Christian, I just play one on TV. I find it very interesting how "Christians" forget how to read and comprehend. Now I'm not speaking of all Christians. I know many who are good people, and don't buy into the religious rights ideologies or beliefs. For instance; "Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things." Or Matthew 7:1-5 “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." This is from THEIR holy book. It very clearly states that Judgment is a SIN and is Reserved for GOD alone. Yet they do it daily and are NOT concerned about the Wrath of GOD for THEIR sins against him? Here is another one; "It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles." How many Abstinent, Vegan Christians do you know? I've never met even one. That is not to say there are none out there, just that they are in a major minority. So yet again something they do on a daily basis is considered a SIN, yet the sins of others are way more important than theirs Or this one; "T he faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves." How many times every day do you hear about a Christians relationship with God? I can tell you I get at least 3-4 comments here on YT everyday on the subject, and see many, many more on the TV or Internet. And just to clarify in James 2:10 in THIER Holy book, it says; "For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it." Meaning ALL sins are EQUAL!!! So even if Homosexuality is a Sin and they were able to eradicate it entirely in the world. It would not stop SIN from occurring, nor would it stop Gods wrath. Particularly since those who are claiming to want to protect us from Gods wrath, are also those who would be pushing us closer and closer to it with their own sins. I do not mean by this declaration to condemn those who believe otherwise; they have the same right to their belief as I have to mine. But it is necessary to the happiness of man, that he be mentally faithful to himself. Infidelity does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what he does not believe.
@billybobrogers
@billybobrogers 9 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you said that. I am Christian and I don't see why there are so many other Christians who are judging others when those same people have problems of their own. It's not the easiest thing to live as the bible commands but we should not be judging anyone cuz it really makes us Christians seem hypocritical.
@avedic
@avedic 9 жыл бұрын
billybobrogers Well, honestly I have a wee bit of sympathy for Christians. Like Bill aptly said, the Bible, Leviticus 20:13 specifically, says blatantly to *kill gay people*. No way to pretend it doesn't. And that verse is a *direct quote* from Yahweh himself(who is also Jesus). AND...Jesus said not "one jot or tittle" of the Old Law shall pass away until the end of the world. So....I feel for Christians. Their god literally says to *kill gay people* and that this law is still valid....but in the next breath their god says to not judge anyone. WTF? Good luck rationalizing that. No wonder most Christians are uneasy about 90% of what Yahweh said back in the day. And even *IF* Yahweh "changed his mind" on the whole 'kill the gays' issue........that still means *he used to be for it*. So....Yahweh used to be a sociopath....but then realized the error of his ways(without actually editing the previous command to kill gay people...I mean, it's STILL in his book). So yeah...I have quite a bit of sympathy for Christians. I can't even begin to imagine how they square Yahweh's sociopathic moral character with their _own_ modern ethics. Actually...on second thought, I have a pretty good idea how the rationalize it. See, I was born and raised a Christian earlier in my life...and I remember precisely how I made sense of all this. _I ignored it and tried not to think about it too much...and avoided all debate on the issue_. Of course, once I set religion/faith aside and began addressing the Bible objectively, ethically, empirically, and rationally....obviously I realized how evil it all is. But, for those who *_cannot_* address the Bible objectively...those who are forced by their faith to actually believe this book was written/inspired/condoned by their god...I feel for them. I know in my own case, the cognitive dissonance became excruciating after a certain point. I honestly cannot begin to imagine how a *_truly_* ethical intelligent rational person could read the Bible and read *Yahweh's direct quotations* in Leviticus and still find Yahweh worthy of worship...let alone trivial respect. That just baffles me. And I think it would baffle them as well....*IF* they allowed themselves to be brutally honest about what that book(and their god) actually says we should do to gay people.

And also consider that the world's population has grown exponentially. So ~2000 years ago, when the Israelites (or whatever other example you care to choose) killed off a nation of 30,000 it is arguably equivalent to a genocide of 1,000,000 today since it's the same % of humanity.

In Zambia and Ethiopia gay people are also beaten and killed, and they are majority Christian. Myanmar imprisons gay people and it's Buddhist. He's right about the majority Muslim countries being homophobic, especially Saudi Arabia (a staunch US ally). But he's wrong to pretend that the majority Muslim countries are somehow uniquely bad at this. The sad thing is they're not really :/
@mrandrewv
@mrandrewv 9 жыл бұрын
***** I know, but Ethiopia, Tanzania, Myanmar, Zambia, and Guyana have all made homosexuality illegal, and none of them are majority Muslim. It's good that you mention Turkey. In Turkey gay marriage is not legally recognized but homosexuality is not illegal in itself. Which means that Turkey has the same position on gay rights as Israel. www.haaretz.com/news/national/.premium-1.629015 Funny that Bill never, ever, criticizes the Israeli government for its religiously-motivated homophobia, huh? All I'm saying is that his criticism of those majority Muslim countries is accurate, but he's leaving out countries that are just as bad, because they're not Muslim, and he has some kind of weird vendetta specifically against Islam. His criticisms are accurate, but the fact that his criticisms are one-sided is unlike him.
@mrandrewv
@mrandrewv 9 жыл бұрын
***** Well, Turkey and Israel really do have similar laws around gay rights. You can look it up. So it isn't all the majority Muslim countries. You're right that it is most of them though. My point is that it's not a religious thing, it's a 'backward nation' thing. And Bill does not criticise everyone. He criticises everyone except the Israeli government. If you have a link that disproves this please post it, because I'd love to be proved wrong. I agree with Bill on damn near everything, but when it comes to Israel or Islam he goes weird. If Hamid Karzai won an election with antisemitic rhetoric Bill would do 3 things: 1. He'd lose his shit. 2. He'd rip Karzai a new one. 3. And he'd blame it all on Islam. But Netanyahu uses racism to win an election and not only does Bill let it slide he also DEFENDS the guy? Wtf is that about? :/

Ironically, atheists and religious fundamentalists have something in common by focusing on the harsh parts of scripture - but the atheist uses it as an argument against religion, and the fundamentalist uses it in favor of the harsh stuff. Compared to people with more positive interpretations of holy books, I'm not sure whose literary analysis is justified and who's being disingenuous. Or maybe this shows religion being inconsistent.

We have taken this discussion to ludicrous areas. The fight for human rights in Indiana (employment, health care, family protections) are simply left out of Bill Maher and the media's approach to this issue. Ultimately, the appearance from the media is that what is happening in Indiana is about "pizza" and "cake". Why not put on the air some of the victims of these laws? The teacher who loses their job and is destroyed because of their inability to work? The gay couple who cannot enter a hospital together? The gender diverse child who goes to a public school where the words "sexual orientation" cannot even be said? Oh, that's right - if you make this about the real issues and the reality of the matter, then you're not only showing REAL RESPECT AND DIGNITY TO HOMOSEXUALS (which was never the intent seeing as Indiana, for the most part, did not have human rights legislation protecting gender diverse persons) you're also really educating people about what is really happening to gender diverse persons. And that just can't happen, can it? Instead, let's all be funny at the expense of those who will be denied employment, health care, a roof over their heads. THE SIN OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH WAS NOT HOMOSEXUALITY - IT WAS THEIR INHUMANITY - it's right there in the Bible (Ezekiel 16:49). So, this piece by Bill Maher is about disrespecting these writings just as much as it is about laughing at the expense of the gender diverse community's pain and the belittlement of the same.

The Problem (Psalms 11) Sin has come into the world, death has come into the world and for that we have become rebellious, against God and in doing so earn ourselves the due penalty of our errors (Romans 1). The Solution (The good news) John 3:16, For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son That whosoever believes in him shall have everlasting life. God in his dying love for you not wanting to perish He sent Christ in the flesh To pay the penalty for your sins and He calls you to repentance (SEE Psalms 51-A Repentance prayer)

I understand why Satan was called by that name. He is an accuser, truth twister, and deceiver. His mission is to spread blasphemy. I found it here: Romans 1:18-32 18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator - who is forever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. 28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them. NIV

Leviticus Chapter 20:7-27 One of Many Life’s instruction books : 7You shall sanctify yourselves and be holy, for I am the Lord, your God. 8And you shall observe My statutes and fulfill them. I am the Lord, Who sanctifies you. 9For any man who curses his father or his mother shall be put to death; he has cursed his father or his mother; his blood is upon himself. 10And a man who commits adultery with [another] man's wife, committing adultery with the wife of his fellow the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. 11And a man who lies with his father's wife has uncovered his father's nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon themselves. 12And a man who lies with his daughter in law both of them shall surely be put to death; they have committed a depravity; their blood is upon themselves. 13And a man who lies with a male as one would with a woman both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon themselves. 14And a man who takes a woman and her mother it is evil counsel. They shall burn him and them in fire, and there shall be no evil counsel in your midst. 15And a man who lies with an animal, shall surely be put to death, and you shall kill the animal. 16And a woman who comes close to any animal so that it will mate with her you shall kill the woman and the animal; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon themselves. 17And a man who takes his sister, whether his father's daughter or his mother's daughter, and he sees her nakedness, and she sees his nakedness it is a disgraceful act, and they shall be cut off before the eyes of the members of their people; he uncovered his sister's nakedness; he shall bear his sin. 18And a man who lies with a woman who has a flow, and he uncovers her nakedness he has bared her fountain, and she has uncovered the fountain of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from the midst of their people. 19And you shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother's sister or your father's sister, for he would be baring his close relative; they shall bear their sin. 20And a man who lies with his aunt he has uncovered his uncle's nakedness; they shall bear their transgression; they shall die childless. 21And a man who takes his brother's wife it is a repulsive act; he has uncovered his brother's nakedness; they shall be childless. 22And you shall observe all My statutes and all My ordinances, and fulfill them, then the Land, to which I am bringing you to dwell therein, will not vomit you out. 23You shall not follow the practices of the nation that I am sending away from before you, for they committed all these [sins], and I was disgusted with them. 24So I said to you, You shall possess their land, and I shall give it to you to possess it a land flowing with milk and honey. I am the Lord your God, Who has distinguished you from the peoples. 25And you shall distinguish between clean animals and unclean ones, and between unclean birds and clean ones; thus you shall not make yourselves disgusting through [unclean] animals and birds and any [creature] which crawls on the earth, that I have distinguished for you to render unclean. 26And you shall be holy to Me, for I, the Lord, am holy, and I have distinguished you from the peoples, to be Mine. 27And a man or a woman who has [the sorcery of] Ov or Yid'oni, shall surely be put to death; they shall pelt them with stones; their blood is upon themselves.

What I never got was how neither side, fundamentalists or moderates, realize that in Christianity it's impossible to love your neighbor as yourself without completely ignoring Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Conversely, it's impossible to literally believe those books without completely ignoring Jesus's message of compassion in the New Testament. Cognitive dissonance much? These contradictions just seem so damning and obvious to me that it makes me want to scream. Can't we leave all of this religion bullshit behind and acknowledge we live in the 21st century? How can either side honestly say they know they believe the right version of Christianity considering these logical impossibilities?
