kefkahkefkah Well it works as long as people are ignorant to what these groups actually believe... But it's gonna be hard to figure that out.. Each group has different hadith they think are authentic, each with their own problems.. but not everyone within the group accepts the books... Some only follow the Quran or choose to follow the hadith they like.

your comment: Most American Christians don't follow Leviticus to the letter. True we don't have to. Christianity is about Jesus. The Old Testament is our history not our ruler. We are told to listen to the 10 Commandments, and all the lessons Jesus gave us. Jesus stops a crowd from stoning an adulterous. His message is pretty different from that in the Old testament. He also called out corruption in the churches.

Draconis Dragonheart No you are told to listen to ALL commandments. And he didn't stop them at all.. he only said he who is without sin throws the first stone.. It clearly says you are supposed to do that... And if god gives people those laws to live by he clearly sees this as good laws... So who are you to say it isn't. Stop bullshitting yourself... Same goes for the Quran btw, you are supposed to follow EVERYTHING or you will not get a reward and won't go to paradise. As soon as you start making up excuses, just give up... your holy text is clear, follow everything or nothing.

Is ISIS Islamic? As a public service, I thought readers might want to know what the ultimate authoritative Islamic literature says Islam is all about: 1. “Believers, make war on the infidels …” (Quran 9: 123) 2. “When you meet the unbelievers in the battlefield, strike off their heads (have we seen that recently?) and, when you have laid them low, bind your captives firmly.” (Quran 47:4) 3. For anyone who leaves the faith (a hypocrite), the Quran prescribes: “Seize them and put them to death wherever you find them.” (Quran 4: 89) If you have to ask "is ISIS Islamic?" you might as well ask "is the Pope Catholic?"

I hope you consider the following ( it's a bit long) : The holy Quran and the traditional sayings and acts of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) strictly impose the following injunctions during the time of peace and the time of war. No one should be burned alive or tortured with fire. Wounded soldiers who are neither unfit to fight, nor actually fighting, should not be attacked. Prisoners of war should not be killed. It is prohibited to kill anyone who is tied up or in captivity. Residential areas should not be pillaged, plundered or destroyed, nor should the Muslims touch the property of anyone except those who are fighting against them. Muslims must not take anything from the general public of the conquered country without paying for it. The corpses of the enemy must not be disgraced or mutilated. Corpses of the enemy should be returned. Treaties must not be broken. In Islam, taking one’s life is equal to taking the life of the whole of the mankind. Allah says in the holy Quran: “If any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people…” (Surah Al Ma’idah 5:32) Prisoners are usually taken when a battle is at its height and there is danger that rage may lead the victorious warriors to harm those who have been defeated in order to take revenge. The Prophet, however urged his followers to treat their captives with clemency. He said to them “You are recommended to treat your captives kindly.” He also urged his Companions on the day of Badr to be kind to their captives. Accordingly the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gave their captive preference over themselves in matters of food. This is the tolerance of Islam and its respect for human dignity. What are the teachings of Islam as regard the prisoners of war? Does Islam grant them freedom, ransom or enslave them to the Muslims? Here, we should again refer to the religious texts and the example given by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The most direct of these texts is Allah’s saying: “Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight), smite at their necks; At length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: Until the war lays down its burdens…” (Surah Muhammad 47:4) The Quranic verse thus provides alternatives: either the Muslim commander should free those captives who can not offer ransom either in the form of money or an equivalent number of Muslim captives, or he should ransom his captives for money or for a similar number of Muslim captives. This is what is now known as an exchange of prisoners. That kind of ransoming should be adopted, as it leads to the release of two big groups of people - Muslims and non-Muslims. The religion of freedom, therefore, esteems the freedom of those who do not follow it as much as it does that regarding its followers, for if the advocate of freedom is himself free, he will not make any discrimination on regional, racial or religious grounds, because freedom is a natural right to every human being. The Quranic verse does not mention a third choice, namely the enslavement of captives; the Quranic text explicitly forbids it by limiting the choice to only two alternatives - free dismissal or ransoming - without referring to enslavement. Thus enslavement is not involved in the choice. Moving to the Prophetic Tradition, we shall again find that the Prophet never enslaved a free man throughout his reign. His Companions did take some captives among the spoils in the conquest of “Bani al-Mustaliq” and turned them into slaves. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not explicitly prohibit them from doing that, but his own action (of setting free a prisoner) prompted them to release their captives. This implies prohibitions of enslavement although it is not explicit. The Prophet avoided the enslavement of any free man in his wars; his actions tended towards its denunciation. He urged the manumission of those who had been enslaved. The Quran refers to the permissibility of slavery only to urge the emancipation of the enslaved. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, urged Muslims to show good treatment to war captives; he said to his Companions: “Treat the prisoners of war kindly.” Relating how the Companions complied strictly with this order given by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, one of the prisoners of Badr, Huzayr ibn Humayr, states: “I was with one of Ansari families, after being taken as captive. Whenever they had lunch or dinner, they used to give me preference by providing me with bread while they’d eat only dates, in showing compliance with the Prophet’s order of treating prisoners well.”

@@academicpresentations6062 you can be a hypocrite. if The Qur'an, aka the holy scripture of the muslims, says, in reference to specific disbelievers who violate treaties, "But if they incline towards peace, then incline towards it...." [8:61, read the context], implying that peace is ultimately what muslims should strive for, and then you have terrorists who kill innocent, peaceful civilians. I mean I think you can tell me if that's "inclining towards peace" or not. And I think you can tell me if the terrorists are adhering to the book, or if they're picking things out of context.

Bill asked an interesting question. If there are only 20,000 ISIS fighters why can't the local peoples deal with them? In 1929 the Nazi party had 129,000 members and yet they managed to seize control of Germany, a country with a population of 67 million. And 129,000 members does not equate to 129,000 "soldiers", these are just party card-holders. That means that roughly 0.2% of the population were members in the party. The way that humanity functions is that if you can get a small and well-led, but motivated group, that think of like mind they can lead the mob into whichever direction they want. Most revolutions are run and are successful with a minor portion of the population participating. The US Revolution (contrary to popular revisionist history) actually did not enjoy popular support until they had already defeated the British forces militarily. And how many, exactly, of the population supported the rebellion in the early days? Likely a very small percentage. The idea that a popular uprising can sweep the existing powers from office is laughable and the only place I can think of it being written seriously was by Karl Marx, and Lenin proved that wrong (again a small group of people initiated and led the revolt in Russia).

Michael Henriques Well, nice moral hypocrisy. One standard for Muslims and another standard for American citizens. One is accepting of the actions of people claiming to be Muslims via their inaction and lack of an attempt to change it. And another standard for Americans whose inaction and lack of an attempt to alter the foreign policy of their government does not equate acceptance of certain actions. So, which is it? Everyone is accepting via inaction or everyone is not?

USA used to love Islamist fascists against communists before 1979. USA love christian fascists and made a bunch in south america in the 70 and still loves them. In fact, till the US are paid by the sunnit oil countries (saudi arabia and so on), USA are deep in love with Islamists. And once again, Mahers here shows how he's bigoted: american muslims don't go fight against islamists, because they have lives in their country. Why do they care about islamists? Because stupids choose to go to war in ISIS's army don't mean rational people will fight automatically against them. This incoherent racist manichean argument stuns the other guests, Bill has not made a point at all.

So anti semitism is not a racism? It's the same thing: fantasies about a certain type of people under the freedom to criticize culture or religion. I know you can't understand this because you hate the muslims too since you write: " by their own admission, many Muslims do share similar ideas with extremist. For example, they've been polled in almost every nation and think that apostates should be put to death" I never heard this argument EVER in my all life, from a muslim. "They may not care about your atheism (or even know) but they certainly do about others." You made a huge strawman muslim from scratch. What's your poll sample? Have you ever talk to at least 10 muslims in your life? I see that's your fantasy. "Draw a cartoon of Muhammad (as has been done) and watch the so called peaceful Muslims in a nation go ape shit." actually I'm a cartoonist, so, I drew some pictures of Mahomet to make a fool of islam. I don't do that often, because it has no sens, but anyway, I never had any problem at all. Drawing Mahomet is not an extreme sport, I don't see the relevance to do that only to upset. I raise my case, I know your kind of internet people, you never listen to my point, you like to spit on a certain category of people, feel free to do what you want but don't believe in your own bullshit please, I have better thing to do than read your broken rethoric. Many capitalists head have been deprived of their industries after the war because they collaborated with nazis (Renault cars, for example, is still nationalize since back then). I don't know if it is in the documentary you advise, but that is a very clear example of that collusion. Pinochet is also a huge case in this area. Bill is so ignorant it's painful. You can't have books and civilization when the entire region you live in suffers from near constant war, strife, bombings, brutal dictatorships and corporations exploiting people for profit. The problem with the Middle East is not the religion, Islam does not forbid the translation of books, it does not forbid learning. Heck the Islamic caliphate used to be the main repository of world knowledge back in the middle ages, they gave us most of our way of life from hospitals to universities to guaranteed civil rights. The problem is that when simply living is a struggle you don't really have time or patience for stuff like learning or culture, you to busy surviving and getting your basic needs.

Albert Lazar No the Islamic middle east is shit because there is no political stability. Aside for a select few none of the Middle Eastern country follow religious law. If Islam was shit the Middle east would have been a clusterfuck since the very beginning and it would never have spread as far as it did. If anything Islam is the one thing which is stabilizing the Middle East after America forcibly removed the secular elements

Sir Adrian Islam is a socio-political ideology that has retarded the area since the foundation of this fraudulent religion by an aggressive pedophile known as "Mohammed." It is a totalitarian movement that conquers "by the sword." I will never submit to this fascism.
@SirAdrian87
@SirAdrian87 9 жыл бұрын
Albert Lazar Actually the area was retarded by the mongols who destroyed every single Islamic center of learning in the region, starting with Baghdad which housed the single largest collection of books in the history of humanity (yes, larger than any library we have today). Before that places like Muslim Cordoba, Baghdad, Muslim Sicily, Damascus and Antioch were the foremost centers of learning in the world. They invented most of medical practices we use today, most of the civil and penal principles we use in our laws today, they were the first to provide education to everyone, equal rights to men and women, free healthcare, they invented hospitals, advanced mathematics, invented inheritance laws which we still use today and they're the reason why the Renaissance happened in Europe and why you know who Plato and Aristotle were. Nobody is asking you to submit to them, I won't either, but curb your prejudice.
@OxAO

Sir Adrian said, "Muslim Cordoba, Baghdad, Muslim Sicily," Muslim Cordoba was the capital of the white slave trade for hundreds of years they moved a million white slaves out of Europe to Arabia through Cordoba. Muslim Sicily... you ever wonder why the Sicilians forced EVERY single Muslim out of their country with NO exception when Islam was driven out in 1093 just a few years before the first crusade? The inquisitions gave people a choice, "convert, take your punishment or leave" The Italians didn't give them any choice. BTW - nearly everything you said sounds like words from the Islamic extremist. Mixed up and extremely ill informed

The answer is yes and no. The religion is definitely a factor, nobody is denying that (except Obama), but the situation is a result of dozens and dozens of factors. Education and socioeconomics of the Near East, the Iraq occupation, Syrian civil war, al-Qaeda, sectarian animosity, dangerous schools of Islam being held up by oil and exported from certain OPEC states, animosity towards the West, etc. Islam itself is a very political religion (or became one after Muhammad's hijrah (migration)). An overlook of the Islamic State in comparison to the religion shows the State itself is very politically motivated and less religious. They don't adhere to the core principles of the religion, the pillars of Islam. We Americans are very ignorant of many things so I think Obama is trying to stifle anti-Muslim sentiment by separating Islam from certain terrorist groups because explaining complex issues, especially issues involving a history and culture lesson, is too hard on the average American brain.

Sir, i agree with most of what you said but the problem of education and poverty in muslim nations has nothing to do with the religion itself. On the contrary, islam advocates education in fact during the islamic golden age MANY MUSLIM scholars contributed heavily in the fields of medicine, astronomy, philosophy and islam itself as a religion presented ideas of socialism and a better economy...islamic countries were living way ahead of their time in terms of education,medical care and hygiene. With all that being said, its the west that really fucked us up! The ottoman empire? The french and english during WW2? Israel ? Yes.

@JohnSmith-ms4xd
@JohnSmith-ms4xd 7 жыл бұрын
+Joe Lackey Here's why it's entirely alright to not invite an Islamic scholar, apart from the fact that they are unlikely to even talk to Bill Maher: who is doctrinally right is entirely irrelevant. ISIS is genuinely trying to live according to what they think is a faithful interpretation of the Islamic textual sources. Islam has no central authorities, so the most an Islamic scholar can say is "I don't agree with them", but we can assess history ourselves without asking a propaganda mouthpiece. If you want a body of authority in Islam, check out al-Azhar; they explicitly said they cannot call ISIS Non-Muslims. Has the Islamic empire been belligerent historically? At least as much as any other empire, probably more so. Were Muhammad and his buddies warmongers? Muhammad went from the leader of a tiny cult of less than 200 people to the ruler of Arabia within 10 years after 60 military excursions, which comes out to one every two months. His four best friends significantly expanded that empire. Within 120 years after the beginning of Islam, it was an empire reaching from Spain to China. Their warmongering and enslaving of Non-Muslims went on until after the collapse of the ottoman empire when the US fought the Barbary wars to stop the Moroccan pirates who enslaved Non-Muslim sailors with permission of their sultan. What do their legal texts say? Open up any classical Islamic legal manual, be it the mukhtasar by al-Quduri, the Reliance of the Traveler, minhaj at-talibin, it doesn't matter; you will find so much violence, slavery, oppression, and warmongering, you will find it very reminiscent of what you hear about "extremist" Muslims. Women need the consent of their legal guardian (just the fact that they are required to have a legal guardian is ridiculous) for basic things like leaving the house, marrying, having a career, traveling. Marital rape is not a thing in Islam. You can rape your female slaves. Many authorities of Islamic jurisprudence said it is obligatory on the ruler of the Muslims to fight the Non-Muslims at least once a year, whether they show any signs of aggression or not, for the purpose of fighting disbelief and furthering the cause of Islam. Rape is only proven when 4 sane adult Muslim men in good standing give testimony for it - which the judge is required to find any doubt in that he can - and if that testimony cannot be supplied, then the victim will be punished for having had extramarital sex by the confession that is implied by her accusing someone of raping her. This is even policy in Saudi Arabia and some other Islamic countries. What do Muslims think today? Polls show widespread (double-digit percentages, usually very high double-digits) support for suicide bombing against civilians in defense of Islam, for killing apostates, gays, adulterers, "witches", cutting the hands off thieves. Bottom line, we don't need Islamic scholars to tell us their favored legal positions on a panel like this, it doesn't matter what doctrinal nuances they get off to. We see the actions of the Muslim world, their history, their legal texts, their convictions and support for violence, and that has to be dealt with.

Poverty is not the fault of Islam. The fact is, is that most countries in the Middle-East are very young and have undeveloped economies. Their economies are basically only based on one resource and that is oil, and they are covered by desert and cannot growq too much food, Oppressive (secular) nationalistic dictators (like Saddam, Gaddafi, Assad, etc.) have ruled these countries and radical islam is a response to this. The evil beliefs in Islam (for example kiling apostates, misogyny, homophobia) is aklso found in Judaism and Christianity (see Leviticus). The only difference is that Judaism and Christianity now exist in Western nations that have fully developed economies and Islam exist in the Middle-East which is mostly undeveloped/developing. Bill Maher, Sam Harris, and others are mostly wrong on the issue of Islam. (FYI I am an atheist)
