+A Skeptical Human Bill wasn't making this comment only about Charlie Hebdo. It's clear what he's saying. "When there are this many bad apples [Muslims], there is something wrong with the orchard [Islam]." That's a far reaching generalization. So is the one about Abu Graib. If an American tortures a prisoner, therefore all Americans are torturers is about like saying, if a Muslim kills someone at Charlie Hebdo, therefore Islam is bad. There is no evidence for assuming either, but; were you to repeat the idea 100,000 times per day, it would stick in people's brains. That's exactly what Middle Eastern media did with Abu Graib and that's what Bill is doing with Charlie Hebdo. It's profiteering and the haters are the pawns in a bigger game.

+Andrew_Owens I can see your perspective but we have to be careful here as to not give a blind defense to any criticism of a bad idea or group of bad ideas. Religion is one of those "sacred" set of ideas that have always demanded this special privilege. What is more sacred here? The human right to have their own ideas and to be critical of others or a set of ideas written by men many years ago that claim to be the absolute word of god? Of course not all Muslims are bad people, but good people can still do and support very bad things especially when convinced by their religion that its the right thing to do. I think +A Skeptical Human is criticizing islam and I do not see anything wrong with that. It should be critiqued, as should any idea, especially ideas which call for acts of violence as do all three of the Abrahamic religions, and what's the alternative? That it is accepted without question? That I argue is the greatest trespass of humans rights and represents the most apprehensible loss of freedom, to be literally imprisoned in thought by an unquestionable ideology.

Being an Iranian who grew up in Tehran, all I used to hear from our murderous government was that Salman Rushdie was a public enemy and a threat to Islam and the Islamic Republic of Iran. In contrary, what a legend Mr. Rushdie is. The man has balls.

***** To be honest with you I share the same belief as most of my fellow iranians. We have gotten a bad reputation due to our terrorist supporting government. However, the majority of the iranians are peace living people. You'll see more iranians in iran dressed in western fashion, watching Hollywood movies and having an open mind about the world and other cultures. It is our government that's responsible for the ugly judgment we receive from the entire world. I remember when I was 7 years old my dad recommended me to read one of the books written by Mr. Rushdie which was a direct criticism towards the islam and its prophet Mohammed. Even at that young age it all made sense to me, and made me question the religion that our government forces down upon us. In iran, the entire academic system revolves around islam and its history in the most biased point of view. I'm thankful that my family and I fled to the U.S 17 years ago where we are able to live life the way we prefer, not the way they forced us into.

garniersf I'm not Allen but I would like to hear your questions. Bear mind though, over 50% of Iran's popularity are either against religion (particularly Islam) or they are absolutely careless about it. Iranians are very educated with a great vision and understanding of what is happening in their country and around the world.
@garniersf
@garniersf 9 жыл бұрын
XVSting Excellent, thx man and remember I'm doing this just to finish my paper and if any question offends u I REALLY APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE......... 1. What do Iranians think about Iran about their pre-islamic days, the one where they were Persians.... Are Cyrus the great thought of as heroes or just like in every arabic country ( I know iran isn't one) have they forgotten their past and are thought history through the lens of post islamic iran.... 2. Do they know that the arabs stole their scientific inventions or do they BUY THE MYTH OF 'Golden Age of Islam.' 3. Now the megaton tough 1 ........ Remember NO OFFENSE MEANT Every arab country has systematically left out the brutal invasions of the arab invaders, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya..... Are Iranians aware of their history as to how islam was spread through slavery and rape (ISIS-ique way) or do they think that the arabs simply were peace-loving and benevolent rulers and the masses fell in love with them and accepted them On this topic, how do ur textbooks play out this topic of spread of islam...... What do they think about jews, israel palestine conflict.....
@XVSting
@XVSting 9 жыл бұрын
garniersf 1.As our friend said it earlier, Cyrus is absolutely a hero in mind of Iranian and thus they call themselves Persian rather Iranian. Which is technically wrong but knowing how bad Iran got over the past years, its understandable. 2. I'm sure they are aware of their invasion. Not 100% sure about stealing the scientific achievements. 3. There is no need to apologize. What you're stating is the truth and undeniable. Most Iranians are aware of what happened in the past and the destruction of their culture by the Arabians. Thus the reason of a long and endless hatred between Arabs and Iranians. They changed our names, out culture, even our genes. I studied Quran and Religion for about 5 years in school (basic stuff) and even I don't remember that our teachers called this invasion as an act of peace. They just rather not talk about it. Islam was and never will be a religion of peace. Islam is against every rights of humanity. I'm agnostic and do not support any religion. However there is only one religion that its extremists attacks a cafe that I used to go regularly after school and that is Islam. That's a tricky one. Iran's government heavily supports Palestine (which is stupid) but I'm not really sure about this point of view. However, I can tell you something else about perspective of our teachers about different religions like Baha'i. I had a Baha'i friend at school and one day when he told our religion teacher that he is not Muslim. He got called off all kinds of things. "Dog" "Disgusting Animal" "Devil" and all these bullshits. Not all Iranians are like that though. Even our principal at school disagreed with him. But there are those brainless minority that do these shit.

***** There's the problem with you people right there. You can't distinguish between Muslim and terrorist. Brevik wasn't a Muslim, so Bill Maher CHOSE not to put him in his list. He was a religious terrorist who killed 70+ children, but he's exempt from criticism because he's a Christian? So was Timothy McVeigh? Try to be consistent. If Islam is dangerous because of terrorism, THEN Christianity is dangerous because of terrorism. Filtering it out by religion, is stupid.
@johnedwards1968
@johnedwards1968 9 жыл бұрын
***** You're much more likely to fall victim to Islamic terrorism. But there's a simple reason for that. There are more Muslims who actually believe in their religion. If Christians actually followed the Bible, then there would be killings on a daily basis. (it's a pretty damned violent book) Western secularism has defanged Christianity to the point where most Christians are so in name only. Islam needs to go through the same process. But watch out for those bitching about Islam most. They LITERALLY want to commit terrorism on an entire faith.

The difference, Bill, is that simply being offended by speech you don’t like (and saying so) is NOT the same as being offended by speech you don’t like and taking action (silencing through cancel culture or murder) against said speech and speakers. Not surprisingly, Christians generally don’t appreciate you making fun of religion but that’s their right to be offended and complain about you, as it is your right to make fun of them. To call all religion a “house of cards” because many of its members take offense at what you say about them is no different than you getting all butt hurt at the mere EXISTENCE and protection of religion. Freedom to offend and to be offended live under the same roof. You both think you’re right, but your name-calling only serves to weaken your position here.
@neneklampir6664
@neneklampir6664 4 жыл бұрын
@@JorgeGomez-um9qb She is not fully right. Christianity also did the same thing in the 16th century. The question is why the Christian do not do that anymore and why Muslim keep doing it and even advocating to do it. If you look at the Christianity in Europe, they are so different between each other. In Protestanism alone there are so many sects of them. Or just read the book of Galatians. You can find that there are so many kind of Christians in there. Hence, those Christians tired to accuse between each other that the others are heretics or not. That is why they agreed to set seperation of state and church to make fair system between all of them (John Locke Letter of tolerance) However, in Islam is different. Islam is found by the Muslims and there were not so many sects of Muslims. In Islam is clear that if you have a doubt who are the real Muslims are, you can look at the early Muslims and Sahabat(the Mohammad's companion) behavior and conduct together with Sunnah from the Hadith Shahih. Which are horendus. So, albeit there are so many kinds of Muslim, the potential to be an extremist is high in Islamic faith than in Christianity.

David n It's actually a complete fallacy to compare the two. Say what you will about british imperialism, or conquest of "white man." But, at least you can make the case that in every society there was some increase to the standard of living for all involved. Even if there was an obvious disparity between the classes. In the conquest of Islam, the case is quite the opposite. They were/are savage and brutal people under the direction of Allah and Muhammad.
@dreamcoyote
@dreamcoyote 9 жыл бұрын
xseig3x that statement is pretty ethnocentric. you might as well be saying "you can make the case that in every society there was some increase to the number of people living like the British for all involved." standard of living is often defined in such things as how much money people were paid, how much land they owned, how many souls were saved by Christianity.. it doesn't really include things like whether those people were happier or even healthier. british imperialism was also quite brutal in many cases. in areas that are fully conquered and developed by Islam there is less crime, plenty of charity, yadda yadda. I'm not saying they are equivalent. no one really should be checking boxes on the number killed etc as those numbers aren't really accurate and don't really matter when we're just saying they are brutal. if we expand from british imperialism to white imperialism, the broader spectrum includes a lot of really ugly stuff. there are and were pretty savage people under the direction of western imperialism.

Frank Houttave Wrong. If the Catholics had all become Protestant or vice versa, it wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference _ they would still have fought until the 1990s. Read the Good Friday Agreement which ended the conflict: I doubt if you'll find much or anything about religion. Also, you're leaving out the fact that most of what you call the "Protestant" side's actual fighting was done by British state forces (with Loyalist paramilitaries playing a much smaller role). You're also leaving out the fact that what you call the "Catholic" side celebrate Protestants like Wolfe Tone, Robert Emmet, and Charles Stuart Parnell as major historical heroes. When what you call the "Catholic" side launched their struggle for equal Civil Rights in the 1960s, one of their main leaders was Ivan Cooper, a Protestant, and the campaign looked to the Protestant Baptist Martin Luther King as its inspiration. The conflict which erupted (after the Civil Rights Movement was destroyed by Bloody Sunday 1972) was about nationality, not religion. It's true that some clergymen on the (British) Unionist side became politicians and sometimes used the phrase "the Protestant people". But I repeat: if both sides had all become the same religion overnight it wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference to the conflict. Someone (I forget who) said that, in Northern Ireland, religion is not the *cause* of difference _ but it *is* the "badge of recognition". I think that's about right.

No, the buddhists are reacting to the fact that the Bengali and Pakistani government have been giving money to the Rohingya ethnic tribes for decades so that they can uprise and separate the section of Burma to annex with Bangladesh, so the monks are only reacting to violent extremism of the muslims who started the entire thing. Do some actual reading before you give the same cliche answers.

Christianity and Judaism exist now in the cultures that have "won" the world. Amongst more civilized secular people who have developed modern civilization based on their secular ideas (e.g the U.S. founding fathers' study of Locke) the peasants who cling to Christianity and Judaism have had to tone down their following of these barbaric Stone Age and Bronze Age religions. They have had to ignore much of the Bible, and even after all the major edits of that ridiculous collection of Middle Eastern fables, they have to heavily cherry pick it in order to be accepted amongst civilized, intelligent people (except maybe in the American South and Midwest.) That doesn't make them better religions, it just demonstrates how secularism is better in that it can tame and contain even the most primitive dogma and find a way to assimilate and support even the most unintelligent members of secular society.

AKASales Funny that you ask. In my opinion, which at least I consider informed, those responsible for our economic problems maintain their hold on power using religion. They are the people whose ignorant supporters tend to claim to have "faith" and be Christian. The corrupt wealthy in this country are Republicans, and they are supported by the religious right in this country, and the overall dramatic shift toward trickle-down, tax cuts for the wealthy, middle class-destroying economics since Reagan is the reason we have our debt and financial problems.

Keksi Yeah, debt was created by stupid people, who I'm contending are mainly the so called "conservative Christians", and corrupt wealthy people, who I'm contending are mainly supported by the "conservative Christians". Those are people, but they're not "just like me." I think you have clueless covered for the both of us.

Matthew 5:17-18: Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.........thou shalt not kill , love your neighbor .....scripture contradicts the law ...people forget the law and try to be like god
@Cypherus21

Ryu Hayabusa The scripture does not contradict the law in Matt. 5:17-18. Jesus clearly says the ten commandments stand, which is God's laws (more so guidelines) in Matt 5:17-18. The issue you have is that you think God's laws are the 603 laws of the 613 mitzvot (Jewish Laws). Those numerous laws also known as the covenant codes, holiness codes, and Leviticus codes include stoning woman, circumcision, and hating gays. Jesus had no concern of these JEWISH laws, even correcting the Jewish Pharisees "you have heard" and "it has been said" when he taught God's (his own) laws. He further befriended atheists, adulterers, thieves, and sinners before the JEWS sent the Romans after him. Theological understanding, you need it.

For hundreds and thousands of years this kind of conversation would been impossible to have. We would have been having it at the risk of our lives. Religion now comes to us in this smiling face, ingratiating way because it's had to give so much ground and because we know so much more. But you've no right to forget the way it behaved when it was strong and when it really did believe that it had god on it's side. -Christopher Hitchens.
