The one disagreement I have with Neil deGrasse Tyson's view on education is that, while strengthening students understanding of Science | Technology | Engineering | and Math (STEM) is important, it is also important to maintain a firm grounding in history and literature. These subjects form the basis of who we are as a people which is necessary if you are govern with an understanding of one's traditions and a historical perspective of why ideas failed in the past to allow better ideas to move forward into the future. Without this grounding, you end up with a society of technocrats that are very capable worker bees in the areas of technology but are easily mislead by reinvented histories.

Very true. Although I would counter by saying that the very best way of protecting yourself against reinvented histories, and all kinds of delusional social programming (and more generally, just detecting if you're being fed bullshit), is to understand the scientific mindset.
@barryalexander68369 жыл бұрын
This about that knowing history in and of itself will do nothing to stimulate those areas of STEM. Of what use is it to know Einstein put down on paper the theory of relativity if you can't use the math involved.

You're focusing on technological history. I'm taking about societal history, what defines us as a people.

That's not what he was doing at all ! He was being a good host, and including Rob in the conversation. Everybody else had a good talk but Rob was mostly silent the whole time, so as the clip ended he acknowledged him as well. It had NOTHING to do with ignoring the scientist to fawn over the actor.

I said this several times. People/Parents need to talk with their kids about taking interest in STEM courses where the demand is, jobs are, competition is, job security/pay are. Liberal arts isn't going to get you job security, nor is political science and psychology. UE wouldn't be problem nor taxes if people had STEM degrees.

This is one rare occasion where I don't completely agree with Dr. Tyson. STEM is super important but how do you get away from the books and the tests and really begin to innovate? The arts can stand alone and have been for as long as there has been art. CREATIVITY is the key and people don't get creativity from physics books alone. There's STEM and then there's the art of STEM. Sir Issac Newton was a creative mind with the like of Bach and Beethoven. Creating is art no matter what the medium is. Oil, music, sculpture, poetry, or going to Mars. The same kind of thinking out of the box is required.

I don't know. Was laid off in March 02, and have only worked contract jobs since then. Have given up and earned a degree in nursing. When I was first laid off, was about the time of the dot com bust, and the country was full of out of work software engineers. I would rather work in software than nursing (better hours and not as gross), but that has been the reality for me. In part, it is because many jobs like the one I had can be done remotely (i.e. overseas). However, it does seem many work in this country still in that field, but it has evaporated for me.

The woman on the panel says to get more women into engineering we need incentives to benefit them. At college level no. At highschool level maybe as that is where young individuals make their life choices or atleast start getting an idea what to do. Over here in UK there are special engineering events and scholarships for women in engineering at university level, but are wasted because the young girls who need to be influenced (highschool students) aren't getting this information. Even then I doubt the number of girls would drastically increase in engineering as it's down to choosing what they want to do and since UK and USA have freedom of choice it appears they choose not to do STEM.

I think the problem with the immigration issue is that different people, in different parts of the nation, are experiencing immigration differently. While she's discussing immigration that's involved with allowing bright minds to get an education here (which I think is amazing), I live in South Texas and see a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT aspect of immigration. I see the type of immigration where cartel coyotes are running people across the border, stuffing them into vehicles, and holding them hostage in homes for weeks without releasing them. I see the part of immigration where 30 immigrants pile out of a van and vanish into your neighborhood. It doesn't generally seem scary, but when you have no idea who these people are and where they come from, it's quite frightening. How many of them are seeking work, fugitives from their home country, extremists intent on doing us harm? There are different avenues of immigration and they should be addressed separately.
