I'm a Christian Lebanese and I grew up in a predominantly muslim city in Lebanon, Tripoli (not the capital of Libya). I've also read the Qur'an and most of the Hadith in the original Arabic, not some sugar-coated translation written to convert people. I can tell you with confidence that Bill is right about his depiction of Islam and Fareed is a biased muslim. He said he wasn't religious, yet he was so offended by Bill's remarks.

+thedirtman00 the blasphemy laws theoretically work towards defamation of all of the five official religions of Indonesia: Islam, Catholicism, Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism. However, people have to file a charge against the 'blasphemer' and that hasn't happened other than with Muslim groups and that one Buddhist group that filed a charge against Buddha Bar a couple of years back.

No, they do not. Total Sharia law goes only for the province of Aceh. And you'll get caned in public there for eating during Ramadhan. Chinese are being on the threshold of being persecuted once again. The Chinese governor of Jakarta will most probably go to jail for allegedly misquoting from the Qur'an. If you ask me he goes to jail because he MENTIONED the Qur'an while being a Chinese christian.

Fareed reminds me of Cenk Uygur, bringing all his emotional baggage into the discussion of Islam. It suppresses rational thought on this specific subject that both usually apply elsewhere.

ticallionstall Good point, I like Cenk Uygur but every time I see him defend his stupid, personal, arbitrary, medieval, religious belief system (that he just so happened to be brought up with), he loses all his credibility to me as a rational, OBJECTIVE, thinker. And as a result I have to run all his new ideas through a special, speculative filter that I usually only reserve for conservative jackasses like Bill O'reilly.
@IraSpain

ticallionstall I completely agree! But I found that to be a widespread problem. I had a discussion recently with a highly-educated Muslim male friend of mine who was simply incapable of questioning some aspects of Islam that deny a woman the same right to an individual identity unrelated to marriage and sons born. If intelligent, educated Muslims that live in our societies cannot question and adapt the content of the religion that they follow then where can a positive change come from? (this also applies to any other religion)

ticallionstall These people never talk about the billions of followers of christ when they criticize the church and they never ever criticize islam but they always play that card when someone like Bill Maher only mentions facts about their religion. It's also funny how Cenk or Fareed are always non-religious secularists... until islam and only islam is [rightfully] criticized. In other words they're muslims lying about it wich is a muslim doctrine by the way: lying to others in order to make their religion look good.

3:13 Zakaria didn't conduct the polls himself so he can't acknowledge what the study indicates about the widespread opinion concerning the punishment for apostasy... Did he really just imply that? I can't digest how lightly he seems to take the studies seconds after he said he doesn't dispute them. I will agree with him that mocking Islam doesn't help reformation within the faith, then again, I don't think anybody is actually saying it will. The bad ideas within the faith lend themselves to mockery, it's a self-inflicted wound, we're just merely pointing them out. No comedic effort required.

LOL wow what a scholarly response. We should not acknowledge what polls indicate unless we replicate the polls ourselves... brilliant LOL. Where does it stop? When every one of us conducts our own polling? Even if this ridiculous assumption became reality there wouldn't be much variation in the results. Palace Of Wisdom I respect that Bill Maher doesn't hide the fact that the overwhelming religious fanaticism in present ties have been associated with individuals who practice Islam. Islamic extremist are responsible for unimaginable atrocities against innocent human beings. I agree with Bill Maher that I don't distinguish between those religious extremist who commit the atrocities and those who do not actually commit the atrocities but support it. I know there will be those who point to history and say that there were inhumane crimes committed by individuals in the name of Christianity BUT I am referring to the present not events that occurred several centuries ago. It also reaffirms my belief that the founding fathers of the United States were absolutely right in separating church and state. The problem with countries in which Islam is the dominant religion is that there is no separation of religion and state which makes tolerance of opposing religious views unacceptable. Those who say Islam is a religion of peace are completely divorced from reality.

All of that we should happy and willign to do. Let's support ideologies that are completely hypocritical, or at least support ideologies that have lost most of their hypocrisy due to secular thought. Let's say religion should be considered good because humanity's need to survive had an influence on the beliefs of certain ideologies. Let's not give any credit to nature, and only give the credit to an ideology created to suppress the masses so that rulers could rule with an iron fist over their subjects.

If your religion promotes violence against another and you are stand silent you are in effect offering your support of that violence. BellaSC Typical ignorant westerner, making assumptions of an entire country before even visiting it. I'm Indonesian and our media has full coverage of what's happening in the middle east. There is a huge opposition of ISIS. WE ARE CONSTANTLY SPEAKING AGAINST ISIS. Of course we are not going to send troops to Syria anytime soon. Why should we? We have far bigger problems that pose as a bigger threat to the country than ISIS. The fact is, Christians, Muslims, Buddhist, and Hindus live in harmony in Indonesia. What poses as the biggest threat in Indonesia is modern-day american capitalism rather than islam fundamentalism. Papua (an Island in Indonesia) has the largest gold mine in the world. Hundreds of thousands of indigenous papuans have been massacred for fighting for independence. They want Indonesia out because they feel their land is being degraded. What do you think is fuelling this occupation? Islam or American Capitalism? Tens of kilometres from my house, there are numerous of clothing factories. Workers are being payed as little as $150/month. What do you think is fuelling this slavery? Islam or American Capitalism? Kalimantan (an island in Indonesia) is home to one the richest forrest in the world. Mass deforestation is happening, contributing to global warming, loss of biodiversity and the displacement of indigenous people. Who is behind this? Multinational companies or Islam Fundamentalist? Indonesian politicians are among the most corrupt in the world. Who are lobbying these politicians to fuck up the country even more? Capitalist or Jihadist? Truly the list is endless.

After the decades of your religious dedication to free-whelming, no-PC-zone criticism of anyone and anything? You can dish it out but can't take it? I agree with Bill's criticism of Islamic culture in part, but it seems he is becoming a bit closed-minded, nay fanatical. Zakaria should have said: Look, the Old Testament has similar extreme laws against homosexuality, adultery, etc. but we have seen the Jewish community evolve, so why don't we give the vast majority of Muslims the same freedom to evolve rather than condemn them all in the same basket as terrorists.

I'm on Bill's side on this one. I live in Japan and surprisingly there are lots of Iranians living here (later I learned they get Japanese VISA more easily because Japan is heavily dependent on Iranian oil) and I work with quite a few of them. One time I was discussing with some of them about the murder of the Japanese translator of "Satanic verses" and boy they got real fanatic (one of them even said, or shouted, he would have gladly done himself.) For the record, the Japanese translator was murdered in the university campus where he was a professor. It's a confined environment so the Japanese police pretty much knew who was the murderer (a Bangladeshi student who flew the country the very next day of the murder) but let him escape for fear of starting a Jihad. Still to this date it's the big taboo in the media to even discuss the matter (you will find very little info even in the Wikipedia.)

*Fareed Zakaria may very well be my new hero. His well argued points and extremely rational refutations of Bill Maher's fallacious scorched earth tactic of condemning all Muslims are totally in accordance with my beliefs on the matter. Disparaging all of the worlds 1.6 billion Muslims for their because of the actions of a minority of extremists is absolutely asinine. War, corruption, colonialism, and instability have more to do with terrorism in the Arab world than Islam alone. Indonesia is a fine tourist destination and a relatively stable and populous nation primarily comprised of Muslims. Yet extremism isn't an issue there. Could it have something to do with the fact that a massive destabilizing western clusterfuck of an invasion never occurred there? I elect to think so! My problem with Maher's critique is even deeper than Zakaria's. It goes without saying that he is a media whore entertainer masquerading as a public intellectual. My issue is that his simplistic generalizations about Islam amount to little more than thinly veiled cultural racism with little consideration of historical context or sociological nuances. Maher is a citizen of a country whose elected leader waged an illegal war costing a minimum of half a million people their lives - the same leader who claimed that he made such a decision because his Christian God gave him the go ahead. Is Maher willing to consider Christianity a hotbed of bad ideas because of Bush's immoral act? I may be wrong but I've never heard him go that far. It seems as if all nuance goes out the door when one form of religious terrorism is perpetrated on us while we never apply the same standards to ourselves. And to me the answer for this is simple - such standards are grossly unfair and very simplified. The invasion of Iraq was no mere product of Bush's messianic Christian worldview than the Boston Marathon bombings were a mere product of Tsarnaev's Islamic radicalism. There are deeper historical and personal contexts that have to be considered.

"Those countries are not stoning people to death". No because in the countries you mentioned Islam isn't in full control, if it were they sure as hell would. The only reason we aren't still burning witches and heretics in Europe, is because religion lost the total control it had in the dark ages. “Many religions now come before us with ingratiating smirks and outspread hands, like an unctuous merchant in a bazaar. They offer consolation and solidarity and uplift, competing as they do in a marketplace. But we have a right to remember how barbarically they behaved when they were strong and were making an offer that people could not refuse.” - Christopher Hitchens.

I am with Bill. If there is a bad idea state it as a bad idea weather it offends 100 people or 1.5 Billion. I disagree with Farid. There is verse in Quran : "Jews and Christians are the vilest among all creatures" During my discussion with so called moderate Muslims they state this verse was only valid for short time during Muhammad's time, in another words it does not mean what it says today. These type of Muslims are reformed already, at least when it comes to this Verse. The Misguided Muslims take this on its face value and treat Jews and Christians accordingly. When Bill calls the idea above as "Bad idea" it offends moderate Muslims because it does not mean what it says therefore its not a " Bad idea " but they don't want to kill Bill for saying it. The misguided Muslims get offended as well because the idea come from their Allah and Bill is waging a war against Allah and his messenger therefore he should be killed. Quran 98.6 :Lo! those who disbelieve, among the People of the Scripture and the idolaters, will abide in fire of hell. They are the worst of created beings.

beka najm It's not Bill's crusade to reform Islam. He's an atheist, he'd rather point out why that and all other religions are wrong than to try and reform them to worship the magic man in the sky better. To say that Bill only says what he does for applause IS insulting, though. He promotes his point of view and the applause is simply a by-product of people agreeing with him. He's said plenty of things that even his own audience groaned at, so he's not there to play to their preferences. Bill's exactly right that it's not his job. It's Muslims' job to reform their own religion into something that doesn't commit atrocities, let alone violence, so often in its name.

Ultimately the funniest thing about when people play this card, Islam in Indonesia is mixed in certain areas with the pre-existing cultural beliefs, which are extremely progressive like having 5 genders or accepting homosexual relationships (under certain conditions). Indonesia is the way it is not because of moderate Islam but the popularity of pre-existing religious traditions.

I am a strict Muslim and I openly denounce ISIS and extremism. Islam itself is peaceful but extremist people manipulate certain verses of the Quran to justify their agenda. They take verses out of context, such as this one: "Kill them wherever you find them" (chapter 2, verse 190-192). If you look at the verse right before it, it says: "Fight in the cause of God those who fight you but do not transgress limits; for God loves not the transgressors." The phrase "those who fight you" implies that Jihad is supposed to be defensive (every human has the right to self defense), and never offensive. Take a look at the following verses of the Quran: “God does not forbid you regarding those who don’t fight you for your religion nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them, for God loves those who are just. God only forbids you regarding those who fight you for your religion and drive you out of your homes and support others in driving you out, from turning to them. It is such that turn to them that do wrong.” [Quran, Chapter 60, Verse 8] In chapter 22 verse 40, the Quran orders Muslims to defend churches, synagogues, and monasteries! The Quran is the highest authority in Islam, and it orders Muslims to be kind towards non-Muslims and condemns violence.

Muhammad Rizvi Both the Qu'ran and the Hadiths endorse sex slavery, public amputation and public whippings. All of that is illegal today and is the very opposite of peaceful. Fanatics like ISIS, Boko Haram and Al Shabaab are citing those exact things while they are amputating limbs or taking the Yazidi's as sex slaves. Both the Qu'ran and Hadith are completely redundant in the modern world; leave 7th century fantasy books whose commands are illegal behind Muhammad

So this God is not the all knowing all poweful one, they keep on bombarding us with! He needs foot soldiers to preserve his integrity (which the Kafirs are constantly undermining). If He is such a weak God then my God is definitely superior beecause he hardly cares about such non-issues. Muslims should realise that if they believe in such nonesense, then someday they will face great danger, as others are not fools without means.

This Fareed guy made some real sense. The biggest point is though that Muslims aren't the issue, it's Arabs. You don't see muslim fanatics causing havoc in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, heck even the muslim countries in Central Asia. Even in Iran they seem to be more tolerant compared to, say, Saudi Arabia. You find those dangerous fanatics only in Arab countries. But saying that Arabs are the problem is too risky. Bill prefers to be labeled as a bigot rather than as a racist.

All laws are inspired by islam. Women get less benefits than men. The third biggest party is an islamist party linked to the muslim brotherhood. 1) There's a difference between a belief system and a person. Some people find it difficult to make the distinction. Pointing out the absurdities and atrocities proffered by a belief system is not the same thing as denigrating a person. It's the same mistake that Ben Afleck made and I think it's dishonest for otherwise intelligent people to pretend that a belief and a person are one and the same. 2) Bandwagon fallacy: If 1.6 billion people believe in a bad idea, it's still a bad idea. The number of adherents to a bad idea doesn't make it a good idea. It's also important to point out that whilst not every believer is devoted to the same degree, it is the acceptance of the premise of the bad idea that makes the atrocities possible and It's perfectly ok to use various means to expose the absurdities and atrocities of religion and Comedy is a pretty effective way of doing that. 3) There are any number of ways that bad ideas can be dismantled and reformed. Comedy, social commentary and high brow discussion are but 3. To say that any single approach is wrong is in itself pretty arrogant and stupid. (Remember that we're only using words here and no-one is getting decapitated... oops) 4) Not everyone has access to all types of material: Some people may only have access to brief youtube clips and that may be enough to stimulate the process of questioning their beliefs. 5) People respond to things in different ways and who's to say what causes a person to begin to question their beliefs? Comedy and ridicule may be effective and so could discussion but could an Atheist be persuaded to believe in a god by discussion? 6) There's also the danger that using "high brow" discussion in an attempt to reform religion, may only serve to "legitimize" the bad idea. To make it seem as if the bad idea has merit in the real world. When creationists try to introduce "Intelligent Design" into the classroom by insisting that it should be taught side-by-side with Evolutionary Biology, the scientific community had to stand together in pointing out the idiocy in creationism, otherwise it would have appeared to the casual onlooker as if Intelligent design has a degree of scientific value.

One of the very few times you'll see Maher's crowd behind someone he's opposing.

Huge respect gained for Fareed for not letting that atrocious ignorant comment made by Maher slide. I love Bill Maher however I find when it comes to certain things such as Islam, he is not only highly uninformed, but very disrespectful. If you take issued with the tenants of Islam, that is totally fine however go about it in a more respectful way. I would never insult another religion or culture no matter how much I disagreed with it.
