After reading the primary sources it appears to me that Saladin realized that he could not defeat Richard in battle. Right after Arsuf he had al-Adil start destroying all cities and castles ahead of Richard's advance. He went to a scorched earth policy, trying to deny Richard's army of any resources. He accepted military defeat. Later he left Jerusalem before Richard could capture it (which never happened because of strategic concerns) so Richard would not capture him. Call it respect or fear. The only other time Saladin faced Richard was at Jaffa, Saladin did not expect Richard to show up! Richard won the decisive victory of the crusade at Jaffa. Arsuf changed Saladin's strategy. It was very important.

Very good video. I was wondering if anyone in the comments could help me with a question? Is there a way for me to access the primary sources for this battle online? I am studying a set of 3 similar battles in Ancient Greece and this account would be of great help. As far as ancient history is concerned, most primary sources can be easily accessed through the Perseus Digital Library but I don't seem to be able to find anything similar for the crusades. Any help would be appreciated.

Ascalon Crusader which do u like most? Have u played the mefieval total war crusades dlc? And when playing ck2 i was always impressed when i thought of all those counts, dukes, kings etc ranging from like 790ad till 1300plus and all the cardinals and factions of different religions being accurate. Im almost certain youve played as one of the kings or vassals to the kingnof jerusalem....did u ever notice a point where it became inaccurate?...are u interested in ancient coins at all? I had a really good contact for ancient roman/greek coins but i also have a good guy for midfle age coins here in germany. I wouldnt mind donating one to you if it would be something u would value
