happilyeversafter2020 I think the picnic is a nice idea. Getting prospective parents to see children, especially some who they may not have considered adopting before (older children, teens), is important. But..Jesus does this remind me of the event we have in our local park every year for adoptable pets from our humane society. I think the fault lies with parents who act like they’re shopping. AND the agency, who propagate that, and seem to herd them around like sheep on auction.

@@BMarie774 That isn’t the only reason why this is wrong, in the video they say they hide conditions and consequences of abuse children have. This is dangerous for both the child and prospective family. For example if a child has a behavioural condition they could in one example be disobedient with this being as a result of issues they have in regards to trust. Essentially the children are in a way testing their parents to see how they react. If the parent punished them in a harsh way or worse sends them back to the agency because they can’t handle the child it could end up destroying the child’s trust completely as they were right in what they believed, a child after that becomes very difficult to help and save and all because a family didn’t have the capacity to give proper support for that child because they were misinformed.

Seriously....these are children not animals!!! Saying things like “they have been freed for adoption”, “if nobody takes him, I’m taking him”, and “somebody better be picking him out” seems more like you’re looking for a cute, cuddly puppy or something. These children already likely feel they aren’t good enough, putting them on display like that is just sickening. Honestly, decent idea to help get kids adopted, TERRIBLE and dehumanizing execution.

"Freed for adoption" is fine imo, because there are so many children in foster care who can't be adopted (even if that is the goal because they can't be reunited permanently with parents) because the biological parents won't sign off their legal rights. He legally is able to be adopted. Freed from legal constraints. That's fine. BUT the rest I entirely understand; it's such an awful, shallow way to adopt.

My grandmother was a house parent at a children’s home for many years. All of the 100+ kids in the home could not be adopted, which is why they were there. This was before the foster care system and the only way a child could be adopted is if their parents or legal guardian signed away their rights or the child didn’t have parents or a guardian, and none of these kids’ parents/guardians would give up their rights. We visited my grandmother every year and my parents fell in love with this 12-year old boy, Dennis, and wanted to adopt him. He had been in the home since age 3 and his grandmother had legal custody of him. The home and eventually my parents contacted her and asked if she would consider letting him be adopted, after confirming that there was no chance of him ever living with her or any other relative. My parents asked if we could come out and let her meet our family (mom, dad, four of us kids from ages 6 - 14). She flat out refused to sign away her rights. Her reason? “He’s my blood and I can’t sign away my blood.” Even though she nor anyone had ever visited him in the nine years he’d been there. My parents offered to bring him to visit her at least once a year, to send her pictures of Dennis as he was growing up, to allow and even encourage phone calls and letters, but she wouldn’t budge. Thinking maybe she just needed some time to mull over the idea, the home contacted her again several months later to tell her we were still interested in an adoption. Again, she said no for the same reason - “I could never give away my blood.” Still to this day I wonder what became of him.

The unconscionable selfishness of that woman to have her “blood” languish in an orphanage for 15 years, when he could’ve had a loving home with two parents, two brothers and two sisters who loved him to the moon and back. We were all so excited at the prospect of him becoming a part of our family and had even begun to think of him as our (new)/brother. I’m not exactly sure what I learned from that experience at age ten - maybe that it’s not just kids who can be selfish and cruel

Estelle Halford Yeah, I was trying to place myself in the kids’ situation. Standing there on display, seeing other kids get chosen, adults breaking off conversations with me to move on to someone else. For a long time after, I’d be asking myself what is wrong with me that I didn’t get selected. Why did no one want me. Talk about a complex involving one’s self. How could a child possibly emerge with any sense of self- worth? It’s horrible you went through that and are still suffering from it to this day. I wish you well and hope that one day soon your torment will be lifted.

As a perspective adoptive parent (my husband and I are currently in training), I’ve been watching a lot of videos and interviews to try learn as much as we can and understand more about what adoptees experienced which must be why this popped up. I realize it’s quite old at this point but wow the beginning of that picnic was horrifying! Making them line up while that song played was absolutely dehumanizing.

I don't know if anyone remembers that animated classic "The Rescuers", but the premise involved two erudite mice who journeyed about the bayou to save their orphaned human friend Penny from...okay. Plot's not important. Anyhow, at the beginning of the movie, the orphanage spoke of an event like this one where the children were paraded about and after the "show-and-tell", poor little downtrodden Penny comes back to her room to report back to her mice friends that her prospective adoptive family "picked the little redhead girl instead". Something about those words always broke my heart. It was a silly cartoon, but I felt horrid that this child, fictional though she may be, felt inadequate because the livelier, prettier girl walked away with the family. Sorry for this bizarre diatribe. Covid cabin fever is real! lol

I searched Jeffrey on fb and he's all grown up now. He seems like a nice man. I also searched his mother "Paulette Hutton" on fb and found many pictures of her, her husband and her children that were born after Jeffrey. No where was there a picture of Jeffrey to be found. Either they're not in eachothers lives anymore or she's not allowed to post pictures of him. I hope he had a good life. He had a rough start and deserves everything good there is in life.

He has a few videos on youtube & if you Google him theres a few updates. They did keep him until he was 18. He says they were the best most loving parents he could've ever asked for, he just went through some rough years around 18 & became distant with the family until recently. His past is incredibly sad. At first I was upset at her reaction to his file, but anyone would've been when you hear him tell the stories. His bio-mom & dad killed 2 of his brothers through abuse. They tortured him in many way. He had been through 11 foster homes in a very short period before they adopted him.

I completely agree, she comes off as a young person who is probably relieved to have stability, but is not meshing all that great with her adoptive family. She wore makeup up until she moved in w/ her adoptive parents, and since the mom is a big Christian, it could be a rule put on Lacey. I don’t think there are other children in this family, so she was most likely feeling isolated, and I really hope she wasn’t simply adopted to be an extra set of helping hands on the farm, who supposed to cheer up the ‘mom’ who may be lonely, or can’t have kids biologically. The fact they adopted her without meeting her first is another bad sign, she’s not a pet, that just tells me they didn’t care about her own feelings, as they should have asked her if she would of liked to have been adopted by them first. Lacey just looked exhausted at the end of this video, I bet you she was more hopeful about the prospect of going to college one day soon (finally being around ppl who are her own age, not having to work a farm anymore, etc), wish there was a follow up to this video .

One of my sisters and her husband have 4, now grown, biological children. They had a professional punching bag they hung up in their basement. Whenever anyone got angry, they punched the punching bag instead of each other or damaging the home. That thing must've weighed over 100 pounds, but it only lasted a few years! 😄 They are a close, loving family to this day.

This children are grown up's now. I would love to hear how they are ! And how it feels to se this old episode. If they react like me,this unsettling feeling because it feels like a puppy marked... My mum and auntys were in a children's home and some foster carers when they were little. They were never told why. My mum said she came home from school and social worker told her to pack. It's sad. We used to argue alot me and my mum but we get on alot better now and tbh I see now as a mum of 3, that parenting..it doesn't have a handbook. If you care then your well on your way. The rest is just a matter of doing the right thing. No two days are the same either

I saw an update on Jeffrey and his family. The mom and dad went on to have two biological sons. As an adult Jeffrey was estranged from the family for awhile, but he said it was nothing that they did, just a lot of trauma he was was dealing with. I don’t think they see him very often. The mom has tons of pictures of the bio kids on her Facebook page but none of Jeffrey. Jeffrey is only friends on Facebook with one of the sons, but neither his mom or dad .

Isn't the biggest problem with adoption not because there isn't enough families to adopt but the adoption process is too difficult.

Apart from the implications this has of children being treated like animals, attracting people based on a picnic to adopt children so they can see them in a different light because they have ‘problems’ is wrong. Those children require proper support and letting people adopt based on a picnic is ridiculous. The file that you are given on a child of their life is important as it shows what they have been through and what the result of that is. Most children can ‘behave’ well for one day but the consequences of their treatment show over a period of time you spend with not a day. Also labelling them as problems is atrocious, as it suggests the issue is the child’s fault when it is a consequence of abuse or neglect. Before adopting a child you have to understand everything about them more so than your own children not giving people awareness of the conditions a child has can be a downfall ie with Jeffery he has behavioural conditions as a result he could tend to lash out when he is put under stress. If these parents choose to punish him because of that and harshly it could cause his condition to become worse. In order to solve a condition such as Jeffery’s patience and kindness would be required. If they can not support him and ‘return’ him he would end up worse and maybe lose hope.

this is cruel and inhumane. imagine how the children who do not get picked must feel. Seems like child mental abuse to me. my heart breaks for them all

I think the harsh truth about older kids being in care is that for some people..maybe most (just a guess) can't have their own baby's so adoption is the only thing for them to be able to raise a baby from the start. It is still sad though

This is dreadful!! I knew it would be when the woman running the show flashed the photo of little Jeffrey around, lying through her teeth about wanting to take him home. For the sake of all things holy, sack her and stop those picnics. No child should be lined up for people to decide whether that child is suitable for their family. Those not chosen, what happens to their self esteem? I am astounded that this is allowed to happen. I feel so sad for those kids.

I see a lot of comments about how they are parading these kids and making it seem like an animal adoption event. What I see is a very underserved, underfunded, and strained system. The case workers are doing everything in their power to find these kids homes. And yes we are feeling some secondhand embarrassment but just imagine how these workers and kids feel? Knowing that the chances are slim and still trying to do everything in their power to find these kids homes. This is what a last resort looks like; not plan A, B, or C... this is plan V. Foster youth need our help now just as much as they needed it then.

She almost seemed disappointed by Jeffrey and like she changed her mind the moment he walked up, before they even spoke. Then when the husband felt compelled to follow after Jeffrey, she was hesitant. Then with nudging him while he was trying to keep an eye on Jeffrey, like any natural parent would... I just don’t get good vibes from that woman.

It's so weird...these children have lost their parents and have been through so much....they made a few mistakes...then they put these broken children in a room...people can choose to adopt.... depending on how messed up the child is. If they don't agree with their beliefs.....You can't choose a child like an dog or cat....then if you dont like the child...you send them back (which is very common).
