Because some seem confused on this, I should have talked about Volvo's current owner and how the company is STILL Swedish. Volvo is designed and run by the swedes and most are still built in Sweden or Belgium (Headquarters are in Sweden, XC90 and S60 are made in America). THEY ARE owned by a Chinese holdings company but they were also owned by Ford before that, that doesn't mean they fired their staff and started building trucks with built-in guns. Fwiw, Subaru is owned by their own Japanese conglomerate, but the Outback is built in Indiana.

Some people just are insistent on calling Volvo's Chinese for some odd reason. You know that they are Swedish, I do, and anyone familiar with the Geely/Volvo relationship knows this. Geely is a parent company but Volvo is actually more Swedish now than they were under Ford. They even own some of the factories in China and manage/run them.

I went from a 2004 Volvo XC70 to a 2017 Subaru Outback base and I'm honestly surprised how many more features the (20 year old) Volvo had over my Subie. Like no factory fog lights? One thing that I prefer with the Subie is the fact I can fold down the rear seats flat without having to remove the rear seats.

Have a great time! We bought a 2020 Onyx XT -- great car. It's a beast in snow. We towed a ~3000# travel trailer across the US ... twice, and did some moderate off-roading while were out in Arizona and Utah. We put on some AT tire and the front skid plate, and we were good to go. I'd say the CVT skeptics haven't driven this car. Under hard acceleration, it mimics a traditional automatic by shifting through a set of fixed ratios. Otherwise, it is just smooth. When using the paddle-shifters to downshift on descents in the mountains, the transmission does a great job of picking just the right ratio to provide engine braking without over-revving. The turbo is also great at high elevations.

I have the Outback Limited 2.5 in that same color. I've put 5k miles on it so far, and I absolutely love it. Yes, the infotainment is slow at startup, but once you get past that, there's not a lot to complain about. Took it on a 3500 mile road trip, and it is an excellent travel companion. Nice to see how it compares to the more expensive Volvo. And I agree, the styling of the Volvo is classier... I'm not in love with the giant grill on my Outback... But it's not awful, and the value proposition still has me smiling. Cheers!

I have extensive experience with both. Subie is great value for money. Its let down by HORRIBLE OEM tires. Replacing with Vredesteins totally transforms handling and acceleration. Feels like an MB E Class W210 on most roads except it runs out of suspension at high speed over v rough roads. You lose circa 10% fuel economy though. The Vredesteins also massively help throttle response incredibly. They have STRONG sidewalls so no rear-end squish on positive throttle! Subie has ALOT more trunk and rear seat space than Volvo. The Warning system when backing up is Amazing in accuracy and foresightedness and better than Volvo. Front camera in Touring spec is Very Handy to get into tight driveways! Infotainment brain has been replaced under warranty which has been the only failure. Its NOT slow after updates. CVT not as bad as people say. 0-60 not its thing. 30-100 is fine and smooth. Subie XT seats and interior quality are very good. Fuel economy on a mixed drive is mid 20s mpg. Volvo is MUCH sportier car, more responsive to inputs and handles better. Rides stiffer. Volvo drivetrain is super smooth and feels high-end. Volvo interior is higher quality. I agree the Volvo HK stereo is slightly better. Volvo fuel economy is circa 10% better. They are really two VERY different vehicles. We have both in our family and enjoy both. Volvo feels VERY European in road manners. Subie is a less angaging drive but an amazing vehicle given its breadth of abilities.

Driving it in good weather isn't an adequate test of its capabilities. I've driven both in a snowstorm on unploughed motorways and the V60CC isn't as competent even with winter tires. Its cruise control system is also disabled if the sensor is covered with snow, and the GPS is unreliable along border regions even if there's a strong cell signal and the map works in both countries. Regular cars still allow you to use cruise control and just disable the forward collision warning. Eyesight is within the windshield wiper range and works with more reliability. The most important car buying advice I give is to rent the car for days at a time several times throughout the year, drive it through most of the weather conditions you normally would, test all your usual use cases like child seats and recreational equipment and ensure you understand all of its flaws and features.

We love the video content, and the way you explain things, I agree that the Outback is an all around vehicle and I love to add one other difference which is a very minimalist but it came really handy at the time of a need, the roof rails which becomes a cross bar when needed, I am emphasizing is as I needed it at 8 pm at Menards when I got an amazing deal on a carpet remnant, and I need to pick that up the same night😊

I just bought the Outback XT 2024 model and I can tell you, if you're thinking the Outback will handle anything similar to the WRX, you'll be disappointed. Yes, it has plenty of power, the 5.9s sprint is evidence of that, but the tip-in for the Outback throttle is quite horrible. In fact, it's worse than my base 2007 Impreza. So from 10 miles or 15 kilometers on, the XT pulls like a dream but that initial 0-10 bogs down a bit. Not ideal for sudden lane changes or even red light drag races. Also it handles a bit like a boat where you can definitely feel the body roll and the extra weight on corners. All in all, I'm still very happy and wouldn't change my choice due to all the space and luxury of the Outback XT over the WRX or Impreza, but just thought you'd want to know this is no WRX competitor in most scenarios. Straight line, maybe, everything else, no.

My 2012 2.5i Outback has 184k miles on it and it has been dead reliable! Doesn’t even burn oil. Had to change the rear wheel bearings at 175k and also did the struts but that is to be expected on any car with that high mileage. Upgraded the rear sway bar, completely redid all the interior and exterior lighting to LED, swapped the stereo for a new Sony with Apple Carplay, added a subwoofer, and added more sound insulation to every door. I did that all over the span of a couple years and now I feel like I have no reason to upgrade to a new one! Great car!

You wouldn't. The Subaru isn't what it was, as seen on other channels who do roller tests. Actually worse than the Haldex in that specific test but it's not entirely real-world-applicable. Both suffer from torque issues either by overall power output or not being able to send enough torque to 1 wheel and no "real" LSD/locking diffs. It's same-same between these two.

Some strange differences based on country. Subaru has virtually no sales in my country, whereas by capita we almost buy most Volvo’s out of any country. Why: Subaru tends to have aweful fuel consumption and horrible emissions which makes them a tax nightmare. CVT isn’t exactly nice to drive. The Volvo V60 CC also has low sales figures here (but way higher than the Subaru). Why: limited engine choice and most people prefer the normal V60/XC60/V90 or XC90. The V60 was available with 120 till 400+ hp, the CC with either 197hp diesel or 254hp petrol. I didn’t even consider ordering a V60 CC, but went directly to the V60 T6 recharge since I needed a low emission for tax reasons. Sure, the Subaru is objectively a good car, but not one you want. One strange observation: my V60 T6 recharge eAWD is rated to tow 2 tons (about 4400lbs).

Yes the Subaru is nothing special on the front end but 31 miles to the gallon putting around town with only one person in the car or if I need to go to Boston at 75 it gets 26. Drivers may be surprised to learn that Volvo models are no longer made in Sweden. Volvo is currently owned by the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, a Chinese company which owns over 15 other vehicle makers.
@Realistick

Who told you that? Most, including this, are still built in Sweden. The engineers/decision makers are largely the same folks. The only thing you are certainly right about is that they are owned by a Chinese holdings company!

@@daweed980 Yes. They are managed, designed in Sweden. The owners like keeping Volvo autonomous. There's also Polestar, spun off from Volvo, which has the same dynamic and is Swedish managed, engineered, designed. Both will use a Geely platform in some of their new electric cars.

That's a common misconception that I suppose I should have addressed in the video. Volvo is owned by a Chinese holdings company now but they are still designed, built and run by the swedes. It's a swedish car. The V60 Cross Country is built out there. The Outback is not actually built in Japan fwiw.

Who really cares if a Chinese company owns Volvo they can't be a worse company than Ford, who also once owned Volvo and nearly wiped out the brand

@@thomasschumacher5362 Geely has done the better job in ownership. Volvo was not taken over by Geely to be turned into a Chinese auto operation. Geely supports the Swedish brand but Volvo is very much a Swedish brand and feels like a proper European car. If anything, it's Scandinavian design is more realized now than in previous generations.

The Volvo drives a lot better, more comfortable for longer journeys, feels more premium, no CVT which is a big plus, but it also costs a fair amount more. The Outback is a decent car however lots of cheap black plastic - a lot of manufacturers are doing this to save them money not you, and their engines are pretty sluggish. I'd have the Subaru in snowy conditions just because the wheel wells on the Volvo would get pretty clogged up being so tight to the tires. Subaru have improved their interior this time around to something you'd want to spend time in. The Volvo is very nice inside but it is getting dated - the styling is 8 years old now - compare to the XC90 interior of that year, almost exactly the same. I wish Subaru would get rid of the CVT. Regardless of what anyone says, they are pretty shocking.

@Msalazar. First of all, it's funded by China, not made in China. It's a much better car under Chinese than when it was owned by Ford. Get used to it. Chinese are the new superpower whether you like it or not.
