I'm an 85 kg guy in my 70s and a novice winger. I have used the Axis 1150, 440, 90cm, short fuselage combo in winds from 5 to 40 mph. No waves yet - maybe this Summer in the Columbia Gorge. The 1150 lifts early, pumps really well, and feels plenty nimble compared to my windsurfing kit. In 30+ mph winds I have trouble keeping it in the water, but it works. My wing quiver is 3-7 Duotone Slicks. I'm riding a 5'4" 92L board. I love my 1150; it's way better than the shovels I was using for wind-foiling. I've got an Axis ART-999 queued up for when there's enough wind for a 5m2 wing.

Hey Don, Sounds great. Maybe the 1150 is better for you as you have 10 kg on me. ;-) I agree it is a front wing with a lot of lift. It would be hard to think you would ever need a bigger wing than that one. And when you get into waves, the lift from the 1150 is even stronger. I have to lean forward not to breach. To move the mast back helps a bit. But I need to move forward when i am riding waves since its lift is so strong. When I paired with the 440 rear wing, I was ok in the beginning, but soon it was just to big and slow with that combo. My next try will be with the 460 FAST rear wing. Looking forward to trying that combination. I must also say that you have so much fun ahead of you. I have ridden the 1050, and it really kicks ass! Lol! I have tried it with the 440 and yesterday I put the 390 on and WOW! VIdeo coming in a few weeks. A friend has the 999, I hope to get to try it soon. He is in love with that front wing. Next level, he says... Good luck with that one. Let me know how it is when you tried it for a few sessions. Thanks for watching. Please Subscribe for more videos are coming if you haven't already! ;-)

Wow! I bet, sounds like you had a really windy session! I agree, different foils for different conditions. In +20 mph wind, you want the 1050, 1099, 999 or even 899. That would be a blast! 🤩🤩🤩

Update(!! ): I got Axis PNG 1150 since it was the only foils available readily in my area and am overall quite happy with it. My level of wing foiling is 'I can jibe pretty well, but cannot tack yet' and the following is my experience with PNG 1150 1. I have tried many different front foil wings with size 2000 cm2 such as Starboard S styp, RRD Dynamic, Gaastra FR, etc. and I did not feel the difference with respect to the 'lift' between 2000 cm2 foils and PNG 1150. Meaning I can foil up just as good as with PNG 1150 although it has 10% less area (e. g. 1778 cm2) 2. Gliding with pumping is surely better than the above mentioned front foils. 3. Drop (or stall) is not as gradual as the above foils I mentioned. It has pretty low stall speed, but when it drops, it just drops whereas other 2000 cm2 foils I used seem to have more gradual landing. 4. Turning radius is bigger than the 2000 cm2 front foils I used. I miserably failed the first 5 jibings with PNG 1150. However, I was able to overcome it by putting more weight on a toe side during the turn. Still, the jibing radius is not as tight. It is probably because I am using 500 cm2 rear wing. I will try to use a smaller rear wing (400 cm2??) to see if it makes any difference. I think Axis PNG 1150 is a great front foil for a. flat water b. light wind conditions c. practicing jibing since it seems to provide more time with gliding during the turn.

Very good insight to the various aspect of a change in span, run and surface of those two different front wings. The complicated and often left obscured data from the manufacturers can sometime be misleading on the real applications of their products as they try to create a hype for anything that they put on the market. Independant and unbiased review are important to create credibility and avoid that we fall pray to the manufacturers marketing expert. I am all for a standardization of real quantifiable data and these will have to come from users and people like yourself to create a bench mark to compare the various products. In my opinion lift and glide value could benefit from factors like this which apply to gliders ( the flying ones) a drop of altitude over a known distance and the lift is a value ( a force) that is also proportional to a speed thru the water. Maybe until such specifications are created or published, we need the type of reviews you so kindly give us. Thank you Fred!

The 1150 is quite a specialist foil for light wind winging or sup foiling small waves or dock starting as you say. As someone else has said i’d recommend you try the HPS980 or 930 which are more suited to winging in moderate winds. Also if you can get your hands on a ART1099 or 999 they are worth trying but not as forgiving as the HPS foils but with awesome glide and speed.

I LOVE my 1150! We have very gusty conditions that can vary from 12kts down to 2kts within seconds here on our inland lake. So I need the lift and the longer glide. I recently bought the PNG1300 which glides even better. I use both wings for dock starting as often as the conditions allow. Turning these large wings was challenging in the beginning but you get used to it. Also: the 19mm aluminum mast is stiffer than most carbon masts.

Hi, good to hear. Yes, we can have many unique experiences with the different foils. As I ride only in the Mediterranean Sea, fast handling because of the waves and chop is necessary and the 1150 was too big and slow. I mean that for use when wing foiling. FOr SUP foil or dock start, it was great. Yeah the 1300 must be a beast. DO you find that one really easy to dock start?

The PNG 1150 is just a huge wing, these are for ultra light wind use or downwinders - I don't find the large PNG range (1300, 1150) that good for wing foiling they are just too big, they are more like sup foils. The wings that would compare more to what you ride currently are the BSC range - the 970 is a really nice wing for wing foiling with similar characteristics to the starboard 1700 although I think it creates quite a bit more lift than the starboard 1700 having ridden both back to back only yesterday. Then a step up in performance from the 970 is the HPS 980 which is a lovely wing for wing foiling. Regarding tails I tend to use the 500 and the 370 - 500 for stability and learning new tricks, 370 when I want a bit more carve.

Yes fully agree, PNGs are Pumpfoils much too big for winging the 910PNG is fine for lightwind but the BSC line is much better for Wingfoiling don‘t be afraid of smaller Frontwings! with a little practise and Wind even a BSC 890 is easy going in 15kn of Wind.

Hi Roymassey, I still ride the 1050 on days with about 10 knots. The 1150 I gave up on as I thought it was too slow. I got the 1300 and that one is a lot faster and more fun for wing foil than the 1150. Mind you the 1150 is great for learning and dock start. I’m now testing the 1201 for light wind days and I must say it’s been a pleasure so far. It’s an area of 1314cm2 but it’s really great for low wind for me 75kg rider. And it is faster than the 1050, which I appreciate a lot. If you can, give the 1201 a try. Preferably with one of the skinnies at the back. They improve the performance more than you might think. I am surprised at your experience. I have only ridden on Axis front wings the ART 999 which is fast but I don't like it's behavior. What is your weight Frederic? For people in areas with lighter winds you will miss out on the fun of smaller foils. I can't be completely unbiased as I make my own foils, but for the ART 999 I found it had great lift, speed and glide but I hated it's wave handling. The friend I swapped fuselages with for that trial, we both have black fuselage. he has ultra short, I have short. But I found I fell off several times in a 20 minutes session just from having trouble following the waves. His ultra short stabilizer is smaller than mine(with tubercles), and yet it felt much too locked in to me. On my stabilizer, a fraction bigger, longer fuselage too, I could more easily override the stabilizer angle to follow the waves how I wanted to. One time I dove the front of my board because his stabilizer stalled upwards when I had a bit more front foot pressure surfing down a wave. He loves the speed he gets on his ART range and the locked in feel for his tacks and gybes but I like my foil's wave handling, higher stall angle, low speed predictable stall and crazy good breach recovery. I don't think I would make a bigger foil than my new 1550. With it's thinnish profile but high stall angle I can get it going in very light winds. But that is 115 kg of me and our light winds are for Wellington NZ region. If there are no white caps here we aren't thinking much about winging.
@wingfoil_mallorca

Graham, I', 75 kg and the 1150 is just possibly on the big side for wing foil. Riding waves, that is really nice but there you have to be very alert as the power of such a big frontwing in a good wave is strong, very strong. I have the standard red fuselage with the 1050 and that is a good pair. As I now ride the HPS 1050 which "looks" similar but that couldnt be more wrong. THe 1050 I have the short black fuselage, and that is also a great combo. I have friends that ride the ART 999 they say its next level. Great glide and rides waves well. But stall speed is higher, as what I have heard. I have yet to try an ART front wing. I will only ride the 1150 on days with light winds and waves. If i'm not busting my ass in dock start or SUP foil that is. 😃

@@fluiditynz Yes, and I will also try it with a faster rear wing to see if it will be nicer to wing foil with on calmer days. It turns like an aeroplane and that makes it not really nice for wing foil. I have a friend here in Mallorca, that weighs 90-95kg and he prefers to ride the downwinders with the 1150 instead of the smaller 1050 because of his weight. The 1150 has its place and when you understand that it makes for better rides.

@@wingfoil_mallorca Well, I just moulded my smallest front wing yet. I'm not sure how it will be on strength, I'm getting closer to the lower limits on thickness. A lot of unidirectional with a twill skin, a cup full of chopped carbon and a couple of resin absorbing foam inserts to ensure the mould sandwich has all the carbon squeezed into the right places properly. Then I need to mould one more, a meter span 1115sqcm wing that I am suspecting will have a pretty good combination of speed and feeling fun in the waves with a higher stall angle retained and also a fair bit of breach resilience. Then my own needs will be sorted and I'll have to find a challenge in another field again or consider selling them as a business.
