Was it incompetence, or thievery or a fine combination of both that led to the issues we have uncovered in this otherwise beautiful, survivor Hemi GTX.
Those questions may never be answered, but we certainly relearned some unpleasant lessons, and hope that any potential musclecar buyers out there can benefit from our experiences here.

Been there done that on about every engine transplanted prior. Loose bellhousing bolts are very common, then there's metric bolts in sae bolt holes, missing accessory brackets, the list is extensive. I won't buy a car unless it's one I plan on rebuilding or spending hella time fixing all the problems b/c if someone has worked on it they screw it up 9/10 times.

I honestly think one of the biggest shames of this is that all those cars get holed up with the rich collectors and never see the light of day. Whether they are nice or slapped together, anything can be saved with time and money and its such a shame that these collectors have jacked the prices up for regular car guys and never enjoy the cars.

If it had a matching block and I intended on driving it a lot, I'd consider setting the block aside b/c I know a numbers matching combo means something to some people. Put another way, I know people who've brought cars back from the dead just to have a concours numbers matching car and won't drive them except to shows.

Andy has the attitude of a super warrior (because he is one). He calls all "problems" he runs up against as challenges and uses his brains and resources to overcome them. Bringing emotion into would only cloud the path to getting past the challenge. That attitude is a requirement to be in special forces and it serves him well on this endeavor.

I remember when I was a kid sweeping the floors at my friends shop after working at the local Gulf station, Ray Barton's car was there one day and I helped build the stainless headers. Then Bucky Hess' car was there a couple weeks later because my friend happened to be a genius. I rode my bike up there a couple of weeks after holding the primaries into place while he tacked them before taking them over to the other shop for finish welding on Hess' 'Cuda and I hand him the magazine I just bought with that same car on the cover pulling a wheelie. He flips to the story and laughs excitedly, "They said the headers are from Burns' in California! That's where I get my stainless and it will probably bust some lids if their competition thinks he sent his car out there and then back to PA for the exhaust". I knew I was standing next to a legend and still do burnouts for him in random traffic when I see him. Everybody else is usually either confused or impressed.

It’s really difficult to make good money properly restoring cars to sell for a profit. There’s just to much time and parts involved since you have to basically take it all apart and rebuild it. So, they usually get shined up with either a good paint job or some sort of nice looking drivetrain. Especially some of the resto-mod stuff where they can throw a bunch of parts at something and hope for a profit.

Had a 350 in the shopwith like 60 psi on most cylinders...found out after I was working on it. It would die when put in reverse aka load...I only found out it had 60 psi compression after....yeah the engine is fucked they put a carb a torque converter and blocked the heat to the carb for cold starts...its done, nothing is gonna fix 60 lol. When I found out I legit asked the owner of the shop where I worked wtf we were doing. Btw none of that money thrown at it helped any. I was on the fence when I went to buy my 63 f100. Someone slammed a 460 with an fmx in it, got rid of the badges and mirrors to give it that damn boyd coddington look. Anyway, I decided to pull the trigger on it because the thing had ran, whoever did the swap put miles on it since and you could tell. It had some engine grime, the suspension had grease on it, I pulled the dipstick and the oil looked like it needed changed (i hate seeing perfectly clean oil when I look at a car). Even though it needed some work, I had a good feeling because it wasn’t too pretty if that makes sense. The thing was just honest.

I worked for 2 years at a hotrod/performance shop, and the amount of cars that came in, butchered, hacked and turd polished was mind boggling. That, and people that think slapping a blower, nitrous, cam swaps or turbos on car doesn't require tuning, dyno time, or even a baseline diagnostic to make sure the engine is healthy in thr first place, drove me out of the business. Plus, the number of people that know what they are doing with old engines is decreasing faster as time marches on.

This is a super common occurrence in the classic car world. I've seen people go to great lengths to scam others. I bought a 68 Charger and discovered the entire trunk floor had been made of chicken wire, popsicle sticks and bondo. I bought a 70 Challenger T/A that someone had air hammered off the casting number on the block and had taken the time to fake a number made out of JB weld. Wasn't even a 340 block but a 318. That one I at least had legal recourse on because it was sold as numbers matching and it obviously wasn't. It was a scam they were hoping would disappear into some guys garage. Now I only buy shells and I put them they way I want them.

Idled smooth, but I had crazy smoke coming out when I accelerated in the turns or hit high RPMs. I knew that I had bad valve guides at the very least. When I started to take it apart, the timing chain was so loose I could almost get it to skip a tooth by hand. Not all issues come to light right away unless you know what to look for. It may very well have been the best Hemi he ever owned...but to someone who knows cars and engines really well, they see stuff right away and those things would have never been spotted or noticed by the previous owner. Too many like this. Like the 73 Charger I'm working on. Owner just wanted just wanted the front end rebuilt and do seat covers. Now after Floorboards, frames rails firewall repair, Electrical, redo trans, swap rearend, rocker arms in the wrong spots, loose bolts, broken flexplate, etc, etc. The ower was like, ehh its an old car and I picked the wrong one.

When I bought my 1975 Dart Coupe, I had my mechanic drive it to his house. Somehow the valves bent on the trip. So much for a slant 6 always running. Anyway, I went to look for another engine to buy. This guy offered me a complete engine that he said he rebuilt but had been sitting on the ground for a year outside. When I commented that it might have internal damage from the elements, he got all huffy and threw us out of the yard. I feel I dodged a bullet that day. I ended up rebuilding my engine which cost me around $500 for everything US, so it came out much better.

I love the restored classic car. Original engine, drive train, wheels, etc. But if it doesn’t get driven, it’s just art...or an investment, and a true car enthusiast doesn’t buy or build the car for those reasons....the experience of driving the cars is what matters. Restomods are like hot wheels cars....very appealing at first, but the love soon fades away.

I once had a 1970 Lemans Sport convertible with a 400 Pontiac engine that had been "rebuilt" at some point before I got the car. The engine was really lazy, so we pulled it apart to freshen it up and found (oil soaked) paper towels stuffed under 4 of the pistons. I assume the person who put the engine together forgot them there, but I have no idea why they would have been there.

Uncle Tony, the reality that you can't trust anything you haven't done yourself, its the entire reason I got into mechanics. All the engines in my "fleet" have been built by me (plus machine work from the only shop I've found I can trust) that way I know it was done right.

@@SophiaAphrodite I was ran down by a semi truck in my pick up. Insurance adjuster came out and looked at it and said it was a complete loss wrote up a total for a 11,800 and t was issued a check from them for 4,100 . So how is that fair. ? Driver had no CDL license and no legit address. , He was given tickets and he ran because he was one of them illegal immigrants that this trucking company hired to run trucks to one place loaded ( overloaded) and get another empty and come back. Do you feel safe now ? Nope so all of my classic cars will sit where they are or I'll crush them or part out or grandson will end up with them which ever happens first. Insurance companies are all crooked even the one I have that's why they let check out. They just don't care! It's lawyers problem now hahaha good luck !

Worked on a 70 satellite with a 426 hemi a guy bought at a auction, that was sight unseen it ran like shit, so I compression tested all the cylinders and one was at zero, so turned out one of the owners had a rod kiss the cylinder wall and they took out the piston and rod and hammered a piece of round wood down the cylinder. Pretty unimpressed buyer.

Without pulling it apart and checking everything again and lubing up stress parts I am taking a HUGE chance against shredding a bearing or eating a cam lobe. So is that the machine shop? NO!!! My health kept me from going further. Not the machine shops fault at all...

The majority of guys who want a classic car like this have as you say, too much money and no experience with these cars on a first hand basis. You and I and many other older guys grew up with these things with our arms up to the elbows in it's guts, and we knew everything there was to know about the car. Quite often, because it was our baby and no hack mechanic was ever going to be allowed touch it.

I feel so fortunate that as a teenager the muscle cars were all just at the age where they were just used cars, and for the most part we could respond to an ad in the newspaper, look the car over (in my case I had my Dad with me) and buy it, or pass. The seller was usually the first or second owner. Now, I'd want one of those cars gone over with a fine tooth comb. There's crooks everywhere. I am reminded of an elderly lady that lived across from my parents. She bought a brand new 77 Volare. Perfect little grocery getter. Four door, slant six, power steering, brakes, and a/c. In 85 she had a stroke, and couldn't drive anymore. I bought the car, it had just over 3500 miles. She was taken in by one of those crooked shops. She had receipts for anything you can imagine. They came to her house every three months and picked up the car for "service". I think the only thing they actually did was replace the battery, everything else was factory original, the oil looked like it was never changed. When I told her about it, she didn't believe it, they would never take advantage of her. They did. Crooks are everywhere, and Tony's right, if it looks to good to be true.......

Something we deal with in the antique motorcycle hobby, Tony, is that people who build bikes for points competitions and/or museums can put a beautiful machine together that is worth tens of thousands of dollars at auction, that can’t be ridden for any distance without failing. For points competition a bike only has to run for a few seconds. Also true if you want to auction a bike as a “runner.” You can build a bike out of worn out parts and poorly made reproduction parts that will meet that criteria. So quite often if you buy a “like new” antique bike, you have to completely rebuild it if you plan to actually ride it. Sounds like you’re dealing with a similar thing here. Anyway, you’re right, it makes for interesting videos.

You're right on the money about the frankenstein engines. I see them all the time. These engines were built for racing. When you opted for the hemi, your car payments went up a lot. These were raced very hard, even the street cars. There are MANY MANY mortally wounded hemi engines and parts laying around out there and retired racers and shade tree guys. The temptation and financial incentive to cobble together an engine from cousin Jed's old race car reject parts pile out back is a strong force. I see it all the time. If these were 350 chevys, they wouldn't dream of using these parts. I just love the hemi blocks with the horrible turkey shit welds on the sides where the rods came out and the crank won't sit in it right. The only people that make any real money in classic cars are the hacks. You have to buy dirt cheap, build them for next to nothing, and sell them for as high as you can, but just low enough that it looks like the deal of a lifetime. Half the time, nobody even knows if a Hemi is a decent engine because it hasn't even warmed up and it runs like 50 skeletons having sex on a tin roof so you can hide all kinds of ills that way. It's not like you're going to test drive a Bentley, but at times, some of them are actually in a fairly similar price range. The last Hemi that I considered, and I rarely ever consider them as I hate the things, was a 66 Coronet for $65,000. I was on the fence but about to buy it. Someone I know bought it and same story. Not long after, lower end knock, hard to start, low oil pressure, wiring problems galore. Ball joint broke and bent the fender.....on and on.....It was one of those Classic Car showrooms
