Flux creates a protective layer on the metal surface, reducing oxidation and allowing the metal to bond more effectively. In the case of copper vessels, the flux often contains compounds like borax. Borax is a natural mineral that is used as a flux in soldering and brazing metals.

It's probably just a small amount of brass filings mixed with borax. Maybe a little bit of sand or ground up glass as well.
