guleet, I’d rather not argue about this, but I stand by my thought. I don’t understand a parent who banishes two of his children to another country, possibly to never see them again, even worse without consulting their mother. Why not move the entire family, then? Or, if he must arrange the girls’ marriages (trying to respect culture) why not find them husbands nearby? This was done in such a secretive, final way that to me it seems heartless and abhorrent.
@gf30117 жыл бұрын
guleet, your last statement makes it clear we will never agree. What you are saying is 1) racist and 2) chauvinist. Apparently you think men have the right to control everyone in their family. Mothers don’t have the right to know where their children are, or to be present at the birth of their grandchildren? Fathers have the right to choose who their children will be friends with and sell them to strangers in other countries? Then, to top it off, while I’ve tried to be polite and somewhat understanding of the differences in cultures, you are denigrating my intelligence by questioning whether I have watched the documentary. Of course I have. I have also read articles about this and seen the girls’ pictures in Yemen. Both look miserable, but Nadia in particular looks absolutely distraught and hopeless. Maybe you would do this to your children, but my husband and I work hard, together, for our children to have safe, meaningful, HAPPY lives.

I was forced into marriage at 14. I escaped across the border in the middle of the night. because I was his property. I didn’t know what was happening, and I’m a Canadian, x-ese. The man was 47, and beat me, raped me, traumatized me so severely it took witnessing a suicide 25 years later to unlock the repressed memories to a point where PTSD hit and years of denial melted away in psychogenic seizures. The “family” denied it. They said it was a choice. Little by little, though... you get brainwashed. I thought it was okay, it was normalized by those around me or hushed up, as though it’d never happened. I didn’t KNOW what happened, and I also had no idea why I had these bouts of depression, anxiety, self harm, attempts at suicide. When you’re a victim of your parents’ ideologies of the cultures they were raised in you do develop a type of Stockholm syndrome. I did everything after my escape (aided by one of the first female doctors in X country) to seek validation from those who hurt and continue to deny saying; even now, yes, I was married. It was my choice. There was no abuse. A lost child in an adult’s body. It is the parents’ fault. Although we can bear children as females by that age and younger we are not property, but we’re too young to know our worth. We’re groomed. Just as pedophiles do their victims, we are by those sworn to protect us: Our parents. It took decades and a PhD in psychology to accept that nothing that took place was my fault. Not the abuse. The rape. The neglect. And it’s also not my parents’ fault. They are victims of their upbringing. When they leave their homeland they socially integrate aesthetically; not wholly. They ever worry what their “image”, that omnipresent shadow in their homeland trumps all, not realizing they, too, have a choice. This is what drives “honor killings”. The shame that is put upon a family name. You aren’t forced to marry just the person in these situations. You marry a family and the clout behind that family name. And the more powerful the name, the less rights you have, and your adolescent mind accepts this as fact. I was lucky, I never gave up. I escaped into education and music. But I did give up my family, and only contact them under the conditions I’ve created. Those parents who chose to force me under false pretenses to marry as a child, yet still take zero accountability. Even today. It’s the same situation as women who are abused, or children who are groomed. Just the perpetrators are the ones who we loved, looked up to and trusted the most to take care of ya. If all those horrific instances hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t be helping others like myself today. I wouldn’t be who and what I am artistically and on the inside. They shaped me, and they can and do, others as well. If you ever need think that someone needs help? Act. Don’t question. It’s better to be wrong than to have been right and not done anything.

How cruel to bring your daughter up in the UK - expecting to lead a normal British lifestyle. Then send them off to another country to be a slave to some man they've never met. Raped every night I should imagine. Why bother having a daughter? Money?!!!?? Is this really the best life for your daughter? It's cruelty beyond words.

That kind of marrying off occurs across all over the world. Remember; it's not only young girls being married off against their will its young men too. Mormons marry off their kids at a young age too !
@13bunnylove133 жыл бұрын
This is exactly why I don't buy the culture/tradition/religion excuses, that just groups loads of people into the same boat and then used as defense for why we are wrong for saying it's wrong. It's not everyone, the families that do this and treat their children should be in jail or at least CPS should've been taking the kids away regardless of ethnicity/background/politics/religion/whatever else. This is pretty much human trafficking with a heavy dose of brainwashing/grooming. Mentally sick people who need therapy, education, and probably shouldn't even have been allowed to have kids if this is what they were going to be raised as, pretty much cattle for sale bs. Should be very illegal. Should be places for these poor girls and boys to run to easily where they can ACTUALLY be prrotected.

Honestly it's people like this that give Arabs a bad name. I grew up in an Arab household with my older brother and younger sister and our father was the kindest father anyone could dream of having. He grew up in the middle east where my aunts had been married to family friends (they consented to the marriages) and he never dreamed of doing anything like that to any of us. We'd frequently discuss it and my father always expressed disgust at how women were treated culturally; he always pushed for us to have our freedom and become independent although he did like us to stay close to home. Like most parents he wasn't ready for us to leave the nest. All our mutual family friends treated their daughters the same, it always saddened me when people would be surprised that our father was so westernized. It was like they expected him to be some horrible strict monster, like people like this are the norm.

Deplorable Arab Forced marriages go against the teachings of islam. A father can not force his daughter and she has the right to say no. Its not that these people who do such things are following islam. Rather they are ignorant about the teachings of islam. The prophet sallahu alayhi wasalam did not allow such a marriage.
@mohammedkhan68186 жыл бұрын
Deplorable Arab The child has been given the right in Islam to say no to a marriage. They are not disobeying thier parents by exercising their right. Islam does not allow forced marriages as that is a form of opression. What the parents choose to do and what islam teaches are two different things. It may be implied by the parents that islam gives them the right to force thier children to marry. But islam is quite clear on the issue of forced marriages it is not allowed Please read the link below. islamqa.info/en/163990

How the case could be dropped by the Crown "for lack of evidence" is beyond me. It seems as if nobody cares about these girls, neither their father, the British Government (who allowed the father in their country in the first place despite such cultural differences) nor, of course, the Yemeni authorities. It is a sick and sad reflection on a culture that proclaims to be against such trafficking and slavery but does nothing about it when it happens right under their noses. Update: "Nadia, her children and her nephew Marcus all returned to England in September 2003. I heard this directly from Jana Wain, the best friend of Nadia's mother. At the time, Nadia asked us to keep her personal affairs confidential. Since that time, Jana has formally announced the news on Facebook. Two things went wrong in England. First, Nadia was separated from her mother and kept under the control of her father. Secondly, her non-husband soon entered Britain (illegally) and is now living with her again. So she is in Britain and with her children, but still psychologically controlled (and physically abused) by her old captors. She does everything they tell her to and doesn't seem to understand that this isn't necessary in Britain. The good news is that her eldest sister, Laila, has broken contact with their father, has divorced her abusive husband and is now completely reconciled with her mother and sisters. In addition, Marcus has re-established some kind of relationship with Zana. Nadia's own children seem to be living happy lives: the youngest is now 15. We just hope it will get better one day." Sounds to me that she STILL needs rescuing. Fucking islam.

When they were in elementary school the whole family would visit their homeland. As they grew and entered high school they resisted going to Yemen. At first they told me it's because the girls were not allowed to visit McDonald's or go shopping. Also they were not alloewed to drive a car. But now, it turns out the real reason is because they did not want to marry and stay in Yemen. I have lost contact with them and hope their lives are full of happiness.
