Bill Maher, I love your show, but you're wrong in thinking that America is already great and we just have to keep going on the same track. The Unemployment rate doesn't really indicate the type of jobs people have. Most people with a college degree are doing jobs that are completely unrelated to what they studied because of the 2008 recessions. And while Obama did a pretty good job to help us recover, he didn't do as much as he could. Example - TPP. The US also continues to support Saudi Arabia and provide them with weapons, which they just use for mass genocide in Yemen... Why are we getting involved in that war? Why are we giving them billions of dollars worth of weapons when our economy isn't perfect? Obama might have had plenty of hurdles in coming up with Obamacare, but had he tried for a single payer system immediately after taking office - a time when Congress wasn't controlled by Republicans, and a time when he himself was pretty popular, and could have gotten all the required votes - we wouldn't have a broken Obamacare system... I'm not saying that it has to be repealed, but it's far from the one we were promised. It's easy for Bill Maher and his host of rich, white people to say that everything is going great, but for the middle class and the poor people, plenty of promises were broken.
@christmastiger
@christmastiger 7 жыл бұрын
I personally understood that most of the promises that candidates make while running for office they *rarely* end up delivering on, we'll never get a wall OR single-payer healthcare. The fact that we even GOT Obamacare with how hard 'Pubs fought it is a miracle, you really thought Obama would be able to create an entirely new healthcare system for the United State _immediately_ after taking office? He wasn't perfect, but I'm pretty sure history will have a way different view of him after he's left office and we're under new leadership.
@christmastiger
@christmastiger 7 жыл бұрын
I agree they shouldn't force people to get health insurance, that is bullshit but I don't think that was Obama's personal choice to do that. Hell, we have no idea how much of _anything_ was Obama's idea. We've probably never seen a policy that was 100% created by him, or even that he was 100% happy with. Even the best bills often get neutered in order to pass through into law, mostly because the pushback from the other side of the aisle that happened from the day he took office. I don't know, I guess I don't think our president has ever been nearly as "all powerful" as people claim, and I can't blame things that happened outside of his control on him, just his response to those things. I feel like Obama has had the best of intentions, and probably thought he would be able to actually deliver on a lot of those promises he made while campaigning, but it's _easy_ to tell people what you'll do once you take office, it's a whole other ball game actually getting those things done once you take office. I just feel like the job is a lot harder than people give him credit for, he was far from perfect but he was given a broken system to begin with, and only so much he can do without losing mass public opinion. It's no wonder presidents age exponentially instead of linearly.

President Obama didn't propose a single payer plan. He proposed his current plan with a public option that would allow people to buy into something like Medicare. The democrats had a big majority in the senate in 2009 but faced historic opposition from the republicans who threatened to filibuster, requiring 60 votes to overcome that. Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd were extremely ill (and both eventually passed) therefore making it necessary for democrats to negotiate with republicans and conservative democrats who as a result argued against the public option of Obama's plan. You're wrong on many points, but this is an example of how wrong you are.
@katesdad2855

Saudi Arabia mostly BUYS weapons from the US. You can argue that is a terrible idea, but we are not GIVING them very many weapons. Our total aid to the Saudis is less than 2 MILLION per year. Our total foreign aid for the WORLD is billions a year, but even that is a tiny fraction of the total US expenditures in a year. As for Obama's power to effect healthcare miracles, the Democrats had 60 senate seats for two weeks in July, 2009. The 60th seat was Al Franken, who had been twisting in the wind while his loathsome opponent disputed his election. Two weeks later, Sen. Kennedy fell ill, stopped voting and soon died. They rushed through what they could. Democrats also had a few months of 60 seats in the Fall, between the time a Kennedy replacement was appointed and when Scott Brown (R) was elected to actually complete Ted's term. Sixty seats does not automatically mean 60 votes--there are conservative Democrats who can't be counted upon to vote for liberal legislation. TPP has not yet passed. Sanders willing, it never will. The economy is doing great, but there are many things that need to be done to restore our representative government to what it once was. Do I trust Clinton to help achieve ALL of those things? No. Do I trust the other candidates even less? Yes. Quit complaining about the effect of the great recession on millennials (assuming that was what you were doing) and realize that there are baby boomers like me that are on their third careers. I have no pension, but I make a middle class living and my IRAs are doing just fine in this economy.

I don't really think a liberal can be confused about the TPP. There is no reason for a liberal or any Leftist, for that matter, to support it. This is one of those things that is a sure indicator of whether someone is Right or Left. The TPP literally favors the concentration of wealth and power, which automatically makes it rightwing no matter what other stuff is in it. There is no reason to support this.

not 1 trade deal ever signed has protected the standard of living of any American worker. these trade deals are good for the business owner and the workers in the countries that our jobs are moved to. these trade deals are the bastard child of the failed "trickle down" economic theory. sadly the right has hoodwinked the working class into thinking they are against these deals.....righties and corporatist Dems love these job shifting, middle class killing "trade " deals. the righties care little for the working class until it is time to vote, then they pump up the nuts of working class folks with pure lip service....

Obama wanted to "fast track TPP" Get off the kool aid. Both sides have sold us down the river to big business. Smoke and mirrors is the name of the game. Obama is letting low wage Mexican workers take American jobs. Bill Gates testified before congress to get more low wage workers from India. Spend a month or two researching then comment. I seriously doubt you have the capacity to research anything beyond the Woody Wood Peckerhead Show. Oh, and lets not forget about Sarbanes Oxley that Bill Clinton rescinded after Larry Summers and Rubin (Ex City Bank ceo) recommended, That act allowed the banks to put at risk the money of the depositors and cause a credit crisis for the banks. Yes, Bill Clinton set in motion the collapse of 2008.

Gleb Budilovsky I suppose all the allegations of sexual misconduct against Bill Clinton automatically make him a rapist then? Do the allegations of complete disregard for the security of classified information make Hillary technically incompetent, or worse? I'm perfectly fine with accepting that all these things are true, mind you. If you're fine with slandering one guy based solely on allegations, you'd best apply that same eagerness to everyone.

Yes I would agree that Bill is a sexual deviant since he has settled out of court before (like Cosby) and there are just too many stories about his behavior throughout the past 30 years for them to be all "made up." Pair the way Trump talked on the bus in 2005 with his entitled personality (walking into dressing rooms of pageants), his ex-wife claiming she was raped by him along with the allegations we have so far...Yeah there is no doubt in my mind he's a deviant as well. What really surprised me is that everyone else was surprised. And honestly, after all the other heinous things he has said, his comments on the bus are the least of my concern. If that's the straw that broke the camel's back in regards to his support, then they're all fakes to begin with. All are horrendous people with barely a spine to speak of. At least the Republican Party as we know it is dead; Party of Family values LOL!

Trump is winning in Iowa, Nebraska-CD2, and Maine-CD2. He's also winning in Arizona and Georgia, but those have been safely republican for years, Trump's doing so terribly, he might LOSE those states, plus Utah thanks to Johnson and McMullin! Trump is losing BADLY. FiveThirtyEight has him at a 14.6% chance of winning to Clinton's 85.4%. The highest estimate is 18% to 82%. Texas and Alaska are within the margin of error, for Christ's sake! That entire ordeal with Hillary as an intern at the public defenders office has been hashed rehashed and more of the same - nothing new has been presented that was not already known and it did not keep her from being elected twice as a senator nor did it keep her from being appointed Secretary of State. The problem here is Donald is a self proclaimed sexual predator - he brags about it and then lied to the entire nation when he said he had never acted on his own words of boast. Now...you must explain to me how in gods green earth you or anyone else could support a sexual predator that uses power over women to treat them less than human. Well, at least in the current system poor people are getting paid. According to Trump, he doesn't have to pay for sh!7 if he thinks he doesn't have to. He has said as much during his own campaign stops, and in a public debate no less. Hilarious how Trump supporters think he's going to A) magically get them all well-paying jobs, B) know how to get anything accomplished in D.C. on a proudly professed lack of experience in the game, and C) not treat them like pawns/chattel whenever it suits him when he has pretty much lived his entire life treating people and things as disposable.

You're talking about solar and wind as though they are viable alternatives already. They aren't. In Ontario, Canada, where I live, we ditched coal and pushed wind and solar. "We'll be a green superpower" our politicians said. The result is we now have the most expensive energy costs in North America and our premier has a 16% approval rating. Wind and solar might be the future, but they certainly aren't the present. They are far too inefficient, and if you put the coal industry out of business only to see energy costs soar, don't be surprised if the electorate looks at people like you as "nuts" because I sure am.

Count Duckula No technology is ever "perfected". Take cell phones. We've had issues with batteries since they first made mobile phones and the latest problem with the Note 7 is just one of several phones and laptops that had these issues. Do we just stop making all phones and laptops? No. Yes it is new technology it's only been around HUNDREDS of years. Wind power has been used to grind grain and solar has been used to make salt for millennia. Hell the first photo-voltaic cells were made in the late 19th century. The problem is no one is getting rich selling them or buying them. Oil on the other hand makes BILLIONS of dollars in profit every year. Coal just a bit less. The real savings will come when every household has it's own solar/wind combination. A lot of power is lost just to transmission. But the people who make money off selling electricity to you have lots of laws and regulations to keep that from happening.

No, it's not perfect right now, but it will never get better when it remains implemented at such a low rate with the fossil fuel industry fighting against it. Inefficiency right now is worth the long term fight against climate change. Every time climate change is mentioned around Republicans the immediate response is "THE ECONOMY! THE JOBS! AND WE DON'T EVEN KNOW IF IT'S REAL!" Yes, it's real, and it is well worth accepting temporary economic strain in order to combat it, because that temporary strain will be nothing compared to the increased amount of flooding and damage in coastal cities, along with other climate-induced disasters around the world. I personally live on the coast, and I like not being underwater.

Trump, the pizza hut guy, doctor "pyramids for grains", Bridgegate Christie, "I'm a Witch". Sorry, but the republican party has been a mess. Mitt Romney, by default, wasn't terrible, and John Kasich was a good choice and Republicans were too stupid to get behind the only level headed candidate. Democrats have at least done their fair share to put out the best possible candidates. Obama over Clinton, Clinton over Webb and the other guys. Sanders, while good, wasn't necessarily Presidential, and I'm saying that as a Sanders supporter.

Really wished Hilary's campaign would talk more about re-enacting glass steagall, breaking up larger then life banks, etc. I realize it's in her platform and people can go see that. However do to the fact we feel a bit ripped off because of the primaries. It would be in Hilary's best interest to do so. Yes all millennial's are much much smarter then the older generations, naturally. However some are naturally more intelligent then the rest. And just so happens those of us that read as well as listen to actual policy pitches. An intelligent more informed voter would then be forced to vote Clinton over any other candidate. Considering Jill unfortunately has no chance, and to insure Donald Trump's (incest ass) doesn't come close to the White House. Those that still support him despite him being a sexual predator is beyond help at this point. In fact I believe after we beat Donald Trump we should enact a mandatory IQ test in order to vote. Yes I realize it could literally kill the republican party but at least we know some moron isn't voting against all our best interests.

accurate, i'd like to be talked to on an equal footing not talked around. Bernie spoke with passion and actual facts and figures speaking to issues we perfectly understood and if we didn't then we have both the knowledge of where to find information we didn't yet know and desire to learn that information. She needs to speak towards issues and stop thinking she's on some fast track to victory because some jackass is showing how horrendous of a candidate in combination with a campaign manager who has explicitly said he wants to bring down the GOP. Clinton needs to speak to us not around us simple as that. We are smart, with it, and more globally conscious than ever before. She has the policy in her proposals, but we have gotten very lazy as people so telling us to read extensive policy is genuinely tiring. I'm a law student with a civics minor so I've read up, and it was extensive, progressive, and a lot to digest if you don't have an interest in digesting it. "go look on my website" does not speak to us let alone the everyday person watching a speech for a few minutes. Talk to a trump person and they'll tell you the main things he says or use to say in the case of the wall. Talk to a clinton person and they'll say something about "we can't have trump" and then who knows. She has great things to run on be it ending Citzens united, glass stegall, climate change, equal pay, LGBT, logically understanding the foreign landscape. I'm confused what exactly her campaign is doing, she's such a flawed candidate but she should have been far and away the clear winner by now. She's cocky clearly and that could be a problem.

As much as I would agree that the IQ of many Republican-inspired ideas is that akin to toothpaste, I think your arguments on killing the party miss a big issue. We're a binary system. What this means is ideally, *both* parties must have a modicum of intelligence, to both be at the table, to both be with reality, and for both to handle reality. What we're in is not this, and this failing on the Republican party simply means the Democrats merely have to not be as crazy and regressive, which means they miss incredibly huge tsunamis coming. As we've seen this year, we've been caught up in nonsense about emails and comments about dating younger women, and depending on your stance you would find one serious enough to set someone on fire for. But where are the real issues? The fact many types of bees are considered endangered? The fact we've cross the 400 ppm threshold regarding climate? The fact we've bleached coral reefs? The fact, in the words of Obama himself, the next president will inherit the major problem of AI and mass automation to the labor force? Instead, because of our failed system, the Democrats just have to say "we're not crazy" and that's enough. That's *not* enough. We should be expecting better from both Democrats and Republicans. We need real ideas and solutions to real problems. And in the case of Republicans, they need to find real intelligence, not religious bullshittery.

A)You aware that Hillary wants a No fly zone in Syria B)You aware that Russians AND American generals both Agree that it can't me implemented without war C)You aware that they asked her about this and her answer was that she thinks it "won't come to that." D)You aware that Trump, Bernie, Obama all disagree? Every Hillary supporter can never respond to this, they all answer by saying Trump. Two points, one of which Kerrey began to touch on: 1) Job retraining has a long, long record of about 90% failure. It just doesn't work. Most retrained workers never find a job, and those who do end up at minimum wage jobs with no benefits that they could have had without retraining. So the time spent retraining was time wasted. Politicians like it, though, because it's simply a way of sweeping discarded workers under the rug. They can utter "retraining," and people are supposed to think, "Problem solved." 2) Things are getting better in the economy, but only slightly and only after a severe downturn. American workers have lost enormous ground over the past nearly half century even though our productivity as workers has more than doubled. The slight bounce back after the last recession makes up only the tiniest fraction of that ground. And we're about to lose even this as we're overdue for yet another recession or, worse, another financial meltdown.

The problem with Hilary during debates was that she was trying to keep her shit together while debating a 2yr old. Those debates were so frustrating to watch because you had an under educated and under qualified candidate interrupting her at every turn, it's no wonder she was like, "go to my website". That coupled with the fact that her policies were much more comprehensive, than his "i will build a wall" "I will repeal and replace" she wouldn't have been able to get into it sharing a stage with him.
