I’m Australian.., I recently had an accident. I don’t have private healthcare. I spent 3 days in the hospital, and needed one operation. I got a free bed, free 3 x daily meals, free operation, free medical to take home for after care. Didn’t cost me a cent. I pay tax yes, ...but I’d rather that then the cost of the American healthcare system. My student loan was near to nothing.. obviously I’d rather it be free like it was years ago ... but at least it’s better then the U.S. college costs.

Bill, thank you for setting things straight on socialism - or rather, social-democracy as practiced in Europe. Yes, we think it’s fair that our taxes should help pay for healthcare, pension, unemployment benefits, etc for the others, because we know that, in time of need, it will help us too. This is mutualism, as opposed to the frantic and selfish individualism Americans seem to be so proud of.

Here in Finland 🇫🇮 - and in other Scandinavian countries - we call it Social Democratism. We do pay high taxes, but according to the polls most of us are ok with that. We get peace of mind, good services, great education (it is the best in the world and it is free), first class health care, and a functioning society. Equality creates safety. Of course we have our own problems, but this just might be the best governmental system ever invented. But I think Capitalism plus is quite accurate. This is a capitalist system mixed with this social democracy.

Let me ask this question what is your population size and what is the diversity (race and language dominance) level of your nation. Because you may need to consider that those factor actually play a stronger role in the equality and efficiency of state redistribution / welfare. Equality is a dangerous pursuit because it general requires people to be the same in order to better guarantee equal outcomes or the impact of equal outcomes thus determining a happier society. You must be careful of copy and paste economics. Secondly the size of your population makes state systems more manageable from a quality and cost perspective.

What's funny is some of the arguments against Canada are the long waits at ERs and sometimes you have to wait a week or two to see a doctor. When I had kidney stones, though I didn't know I had them yet, they had to drive me to a hospital 18 miles away because the hospital a mile from my house had an ER wait time of 14 hours and the next closest was 12 hours due to flu season. Even still I had to wait over 5 hours before anyone saw me. A few years later when I had a massive migraine and exited the ER I had to wait two weeks to see a doctor so it's not as though people here in the US don't already have to wait. The only reason I was submitted quickly to see a doctor when I had a massive migraine was because they thought I had a stroke.

@holycrapchris
@holycrapchris 5 жыл бұрын
Both of those were the result of failed government fiscal and monetary policy. The Federal Reserve System allows banks to created money through mortgages. The government agencies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bought whatever mortgages the banks made. The federal government incentivized banks to make subprime loans. And then when the whole thing blow up, the government bails out the banks. How exactly was the Great Recession unfettered? If it was truly unfettered, the banks would have gone into bankruptcy.
@assassinsrequiem

holycrapchris hence, failed capitalism. And the banks nearly did go bankrupt. But, in a need to keep jobs for people and a demand to pay it back, the government bailed them out so as not to have a full economic collapse. Just like GM and other businesses who were deregulated to give them as full of “free market” as they demanded, Republicans took them off their leashes and let them do as they pleased. As a result, severe economic crippling which they ignored and denied it happening until a Democrat went into office, then tried to put all the blame on Obama before his first year.

@Bubbles McGee Well, they're not 100% socialist, but a lot of these countries' systems in place are socialist. 100% socialism or 100% capitalism never work. You have to find the right amount of each of them in order to form a functioning society. A lot of socialist concepts we have here in America are emergency services, public education, public transportation, roads and highways, the military, public libraries, public prisons, and public parks. We still run on capitalism, but we also have some socialism in order to make sure the country doesn't fall apart by companies trying to cut costs and risk human lives, which was showcased in the Boeing scandal that Maher mentioned at the end of the video. These socialist countries just have more socialism than we do, but of course they're not competely socialist. I'd say the exact opposite is true. Thing is, the scores, rankings, GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption are statistically indistinguishable from each other (not that Bill's the real bad chart in the segment shows this; ironically his really bad chart actually makes us look closer than the hard numbers in the report)! The difference between the USA and Finland and everyone in between is in tenths of a point. Plus, some categories outperform other nations above them. In that Bill is focused on health care here in this segment, we should note that the difference between the USA and Finland in this catagory isn't even tenths of a point, its in HUNDREDTHS of a point! This graph and the actual statistics in the report only show that we are all almost statistically indistinguishable from each other regarding happiness. Bill is way off, in essence, he's making an argument that socialism and capitalism net basically the exact same thing.

That is remarkably comical since most liberals and lefties just engage in chants as oppose to structured debate. AOC, the left's darling, refuses to debate anyone. Conservatives are silenced on college campuses for the same reason....they present facts and effective policy prescriptions but they are things that lefties just don't like to hear. It is not conservatives who create safe spaces and jump to snap judgement from the cut version of police videos. It is not conservatives who jump to snap judgement on legislation without analyzing statistics. You gave me a good laugh. Fear? You are right. Thing is, the scores, rankings, GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption are statistically indistinguishable from each other (not that Bill's real bad chart in the segment shows this; ironically his really bad chart actually makes us look closer than the hard numbers in the report)! Bill is way off, in essence, he's making an argument that for everything they do differently, the net happens result is basically the exact same thing.

I am a Tico living in Costa Rica. Let me clarify a few things for you. The Caja or SS(National Healthcare) is abysmal and overextended. The public Hospitals are dirty and visiting one for an emergency will guarantee waiting many hours. The doctors are not well trained and often misdiagnose the simplest of conditions. The Health care in private hospitals(Clinica Biblica/CIMA) and private dental offices is great and reasonably priced however but still don't have the same expertise as found in the USA. The main reason private hospitals offer great prices is the lack of regulations with private healthcare and the fact that this is not a litigious country at all bringing health care costs down. A judge will laugh at any "frivolous" lawsuit. The environment is great here overall because being a rainforest environment we can produce 98% of our electricity in a renewable manner(mostly Hydro dams), so there is some good government policies regarding preservation as you suggest but this is more complicated situation. This country during the last 30 years has had a tremendous amount of wealthy gringos and europeans move in (basically gentrification on a nation level) that have restored large plots of land from farmland to native secondary and primary jungle (mainly for ecotourism or just environmental means) and this country has most of its GDP based upon tourism so has strong incentives for everyone to preserve the main reason tourists visit here. This country in practice has extremely low taxes compared to the USA, so any suggestions that we are a welfare state is misleading. Not supporting a military, and relying on the USA to protect us gives us an advantage in exchange for losing some of our soverignty. As far as the reason why we often are one of the Happiest countries , it more has to do with our culture. The most common slogan used here is "Pura Vida" or the pure/good life and we are generally a happy and healthy people based upon our cultural outlook.

You spend more on your military than the next 26 countries combined. That’s a form of socialism, so why don’t the republicans just agree to take some of that budget and give you all free healthcare?! In a country that leads the world on many fronts, it’s shocking to see people go broke because of illnesses or pregnancy.

Unfortunately America has different priority and have population numbers that are 2 times the amount of most countries offering choices and benefits that effect health Care, education, infrastructure, caring for Veteran's, and imigration (mostly Illegal), and push higher taxes and expensive ideas such as rent control and taxing normal people. The idea of every person getting free health care is great idea but how we spend money on helping others around the world and not getting other countries to contribute has us in a situation where we cannot provide. If we have Nationalism where we stop our immigration, stop supporting other countries, stop protecting other countries and the countries who hate America, and if the teachers want to negotiate their pay so we can afford to give free education then maybe we can cover and give some citizen breaks on less, much less costly education. We have over 300 million people and growing rapidly. I wish best for countries around the world and hope they can continue to give you health Care along with more immigrants that are entering your own Countries. No country is perfect nor there will ever be. But America didn't get where we are by giving free services to everyone. We give free services to those who need it but unfortunately those who need it are in need of more than just education and health care. Food, shelter, and basic stuff that is supporting their existence. Most countries around the USA have minimum wage of 20 a month US dollar, in America it's 11-15 dollars and hour. What is the minimum wage of Countries that in the list? How many cars does those people have and use every day? Opportunity for one country versus another aren't the same and or have the same problems getting to those opportunities. What worked for you doesn't work for America, and what works for America doesn't work for your country. We have the largest deficit, largest economy in the world supporting countries all over the world and happy to help you all(this is my views) but first and foremost I believe USA has to work out what is best for us. The problem is facts about the truth aren't always the True facts in order to fix the system. We know the system is being broken and have some problems. But there is not another country like America. We will figure it out and how well our system can improve depends on so many things other countries don't have to deal with in the scale as America. American citizens wish all Countries the best. We don't want to see any Countries go bad.

There’s plenty of examples of poor people now being tossed in jail because the courts have been disguising their mail to look like it’s from the place the people have been paying their debt to. When the people don’t notice that it’s a notice for them to show up to court the poor people then get tossed in jail for avoiding the summons. This practice is actually illegal but they found a loophole in the law which is why they’re abusing that loophole

The states cited in the UN report are market economies with more generous social safety nets, not socialist states. In response to Bernie Sanders citing Denmark as an example of a democratic socialist country, their Prime Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, said "I know that some people in the U.S. associate the Nordic model with some sort of socialism...Therefore, I would like to make one thing clear. Denmark is far from a socialist planned market economy. The Nordic model is an expanded welfare state which provides a high level of security to its citizens, but it is also a successful market economy with much freedom to pursue your dreams and live your life as you wish."

Yes! Yes and Yes. Thank you. Everytime an American says to me (a German): "yeah, but your Healthcare isn't free, you pay so much on taxes", I answer to them: And gladly so!! What we get for our high taxes is exactly the peace of mind Bill is talking about here. When you feel there is something wrong with your body you don't start to calculate the risk of spending or not spending money on seeing a doctor about it. You just go. If it turns out it is something to be dealt with, you still don't think about the money and just get better. If that takes a week out of your work so be it. Employers in Germany have to respect sick notes from doctors and can't even touch your 24 paid holidays. We have paid sick leave also covered by insurance and you can't be fired for missing out a week at work - or three in case you had surgery. And guess what: it is not killing our economy. Neither is providing free universities so everyone with the potential for it can get a degree (and then more likely become a bigger earner and bigger tax payer). It is actually a shame that we rank only two positions above America on the happiness index because we don't even realize how good we have it here.

It's a debate because our population is ENORMOUS compared to the Nordic countries. Norway, Denamrk, Finland all have like 6 million people or less. Sweden has 10 million. We are pushing 330 million. To do what they do would require an enormous overhaul and eye-watering taxes. Slashing military spending would help, but still...it wouldn't be easy. We already have Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security etc...so we've been a hybrid for a long time now. I like the idea of moving to a Nordic model, but to act like it's simple for a country like the US (as so many of these bits often do) is...a bit disingenuous. It's very easy to do what they do when you have fewer people than New York City in your entire country.
@laviliburd

@caomhan84 a larger population means a larger economic base to support the system. It would actually be EASIER for the USA to do this than smaller countries. What is difficult is for the US to see all citizens as EQUAL citizens and therefore equally worthy of educational opportunities, healthcare, and a safety net. What is difficult is to envision progress for the country AS A WHOLE and develop a commonality of purpose to implement it. The meaning of the rights to LIFE, LIBERTY, and the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS remains strangely warped in the USA.

Because the rest of Europe think they lack a sense of humor, and secretly they themselves agree. ;) But seriously, since East and West Germany reunited your infrastructure really deteriorated. Road works and pot holes are everywhere. Drive around in your neighbor to the west and notice the difference. But despite all that we still like Germans and Germany a lot! @@Asher_Tye That's dumb. You can eat pretty healthy food without having to spend very much. Veggies are super cheap, chicken is super cheap, ground turkey is super cheap. Like I don't know where people got this myth that healthy food is expensive. Fast food is just easier, and addictive. But it's actually more expensive than shopping healthy food. I spend 40 dollars a week on food, in Trader Joes, which is on the pricier end of grocery stores. I eat incredibly healthy and cook all my meals. The median household income in America is 60K a year. Divided by 12 that's 5K monthly. For a household of four, eating healthy would cost them 160*40 = 840 dollars (and that's an insane overestimation because people who shop at Kohls and Publix spend way less than that). There's plenty of money left to pay rent, insurance, savings, transportation, and schooling for the kids. A big mac meal, in turn, is 5.99. That's about the cheapest fast food you can eat. If that's all you and your family ever eat for your three meals, that'll come to about $2,016 dollars a month. So yeah, you're off by more than a 100% mate.

Vladimir_Bone Spur_tRump are you dumb? Just because there are corporations in the medical industry does not mean Corporate Medical System is a real thing that means anything. Its a term this dude pulled out of his ass because he doesn’t know how to speak with any degree of precision. But in any case, lets assume for a second that that moronic term is a real term that implies the presence of corporations in an industry. Are you suggesting we eliminate all corporation s in the medical industry? Like all of them? Who’s going to spend the billions of dollars in Research and Development to undertake the finding of new life saving medicines and drugs? The government? Right, cause that worked wonders in the 80s when the FDA was so far up everyone’s ass that people were dying of Aids when there was medicine readily available from like 50 different markets. You really have no idea what you’re talking about. Corporations were the ones who brought Penicillin to market. They brought in MRI, Pet and CAT scans, they’re the ones finding the cure for cancer. So you’re either incredibly stupid, or a teenager who’s world view doesn’t stretch further than “Corporations are evil man”

You know, there are 2 kinds of socialism-equality of opportunity and equality of outcome-and there are aspects of both that are commonplace in the Unite States today. Equality of opportunity includes things like education, emergency care, and protections guaranteed in the Constitution; everyone regardless of income or citizenship status has the right to access these things. Equality of outcome includes things like the highways and the police and fire departments; everyone pays taxes to fund these things and we all get to use them because of this. So the next time you encounter someone who says that socialism is bad, be sure to explain to them these things and ask them if they think that their life would be better without them!

I feel you, I think Bernie’s great too. But I think he’d rather wait to see the candidates. In 2016, he felt the urgency of needing Bernie’s fresh ideas to become mainstream. Now that they are mainstream, he doesn’t need to endorse Bernie specifically No need to ostracize him for this one. Democrats don’t need to turn on one another like last time
