I recently bought a kit, and it's the newer straighter case style. The only difference I noticed is that the paint holder is now a cheap plastic frame, not foam. Not that big of a deal, but it is worth noting.

@@PaintMiniSchool Yeah, the plastic comes out very easily if you don't grab the paints just right. I think it might fewer paints too. Wish I would have gotten the foam.

I recently painted a Neca/Wizkids Beholder, and, let me tell you... I figured that since it was a Neca Nolzur’s miniature that it didn’t need any soap and water, but those eyestalks fought me every single solitary step. Learned my lesson about putting the toothbrush to them.

yeah, the funny thing is you can normally get away with not washing but.. the one time it gives you troubles and you will forevermore wash everything. An ounce of prevention. :)

Great video & glad to find this after a many years break from miniature painting. After seeing some of the other tutorial videos (like Goobertown Hobbies) & your videos, it seems that the metallic paint from the kit is best used not as a base layer but dry brush/highlights due to the thin paint. Keep up the great work!

I know this is an old video, but I just had to comment. This is the best true beginner video I've seen. So many 'beginner' videos out there make too many assumptions, or don't show you what the artist is doing outside of applying the paint. Thanks so much for really helping a beginner get started.

So one can make a wash without all the fancy mediums and everything, just by diluting the darker paint enough?

Yup, do it all the time. Just add plenty of water and viola' … " you have a wash". It is actually great for subtle washes, the mediums and premade washes are much better at being very viscous and strong( one coat effects). Another fun trick is heavily diluting an Ink, you just have to give it plenty of time to dry before adding another water based paint layer.

Great Video. I do have one question though. You mentioned you didn't like Reapers Metallics as well as some others. What brand of metallics do you recommend? I think Metallics would be a very important choice, especially in fantasy / war miniatures due to armor, weapons, shields etc. I painted one miniature 15 years ago, and had planned to get into it then, but life had other plans. However, I recently bought this set and a couple wash's from Citidal based on numerous you tube video viewings (these 2 washes just kept coming up). I now have some time, and more importantly the room in my house, to start painting mini's but I have a lot to learn. I am also getting my niece and nephews involved. Appreciate any tips of where to go next, perhaps the "layering" kit, perhaps one of the Nolzur's kits? The "Monster painting" one where you paint the Owlbear seems to be a candidate.

Thanks for the kind words. In terms of Metallics, I recommend Citadel. Picking a handful of those and you can't go wrong. Most avid painters will have a collection of paints from many different paint manufactures, as metallics can be a very personal/subjective choice. As far as where to go next, I would say grab some Individual Reaper Bones Models. They are Cheap and scaled in such a way to be very fun and easy to paint. The Nolzurs can get a bit too small and fidly wlth the details. I don't recommend the layering kit until you kinda get to a point where you feel you've moved into intermediate skill levels and techniques. I tried to do a video on that set ( layers set which I bought) and I was not happy with the result or the methodology and instructions in the kit, so I canned the video. @@PaintMiniSchool The audio isn't bad, it's just way too much bass. If you have a subwoofer on your computers it punches and drones. I have a low bass EQ setting and it was still too heavy at the beginning. I liked the video though, it was just hard to listen to because I had to lower the volume so it didn't rattle the walls.

Just wait till the paint is dry before applying a wash. Pretty much wait till any coat is dry is the general rule of thumb... some washes take longer to dry. I've noticed the Army painter washes sometimes look better different/ better after an all night cure, I think it has some kind of varnish in it... happy painting.

I have been trying to get the washing done but no matter how much I water the black down it just paints it a faint black and looks muddy. are there any other tips I'm missing

Sounds like it's working? The goal of a wash is to run down into the crevices. It will also stain the base coat and somewhat appear muddy, especially black. Try only applying the wash in select areas of the crevices instead off an all over the model application.

skywalkerwindtalker. They are just like water color but much thicker in consistency. Keep the faith.just getting some paint and playing around with it on a palette one time and you will get it :)

thanks for the comment. Yeah, Army painter is ok. They are a decent starter paint. They shine when you basecoat with another brand that has better coverage and use the Army painter for layering, glazing, washing. Even reaper has issues with coverage with the basecoat ( as many brands) you either have to find what you like for basecoats or just get used to the fact of apply 2-3 layers on the basecoat to get the coverage and effect you're looking for. These figures are made my Reaper Miniatures called "Reaper Bones" They were marketed as a Primer-Less figure line. They Do not need a primer coat, that is one of it's biggest advantages, along with affordability.

I love this product. really got my feet into painting minis. Don't forget they have a second beginner box, "Layering Up". Similar product but covering layering and glazes so its a good next step.

Yes. I agree.The Layer Up is great too. I tried to capture some footage but the topic of layering, in their style, was difficult to portrait properly in my format. Maybe in the future.

Do you really need to wash these reaper models first?

I washed them but forgot to wash the paladin. And the paladin gave me fits trying to get the paint to stick. For the most part you don't have to but if you don't there's always the chance that you sit down with a model and it gives you problems. I basically do it as a preventative.

yes. thoroughly too. Reaper is notorious for having a lot of release agent on their minis. this is a lubricant to help with removing the model from casting molds. Also make sure to wash off all the soap when cleaning. this too can make your paint not adhere correctly and rub right off

@@PaintMiniSchool: I went ahead and got these kits, Core Skills and Layer Up. I used to paint the old lead, then pewter, miniatures with the Testors' enamel based paints in the 80's. What a world of difference acrylic based paints make. These two kits definitely are whet they said they are: a great way to learn, or I my case, relearn to paint miniatures. The instruction are good, but seeing the techniques used in real time in your and others' videos is more useful. The only quibble I have is the cases are now make cheaply. The cases work for now, but will have to be replaced eventually as I acquire more paints and brushes. I may never be as good of a painting as you, but I can paint the minis for use in my games, which is good enough for my friends and me.

You don't have to. Most pre-primed mini's from Wizkids state that you don't have to.. that they're "Primed and ready for Paint". That being said I have found that some of them have very thin layers of prime and do have some oils left on the mini. It won't happen to every mini but if it happens to even 1 it can be annoying. Honestly, a quick bath with warm soapy water and an old toothbrush plus dry time Eliminates The Issue... so that's what I do. Since then, I've had a much more enjoyable experience when painting PrePrimed mini's. So, No you don't have to... but you should. Hope that helps.

What experience do you have with Warpaints colors?

I have alot of warpaints, I bought a mega paint set a while ago and haven't looked back. The only thing this paints don't do well seems to be basecoating. That can be worked with by adding a couple of coats but some colors cover better than others ect. I usually use vallejo to basecoat and then use my warpaints for the rest of the job. The biggest advantage is price... they just can't be beat when you buy the mega paint set. Are they the be all end all ?? probably not but to be honest I use alot of different paint lines, taking advantage of the best that they have to offer, per manufacturer... so my collection is rather diverse, and that's how I attain the "be all end all" because I'm not sure any one line can do everything I expect. When it comes time to do the highlighting, are you loading the paintbrush with undiluted paint, and then brushing it off on the paper towel? Or is that paint thinned by water first? Thanks again!

Your very welcome.thx for the kind words. So yes, drybrushing is usually done with undiluted paint then rubbed off on a papertowel. I use that technique quite often in these videos because it yields good results quick and still allows you some artistic freedom to drybrush as much or as little as you see fit.
