Thanks for this tutorial. I did the drum brakes on my my18 colorado yesterday. Your video is the best one on youtube for this. I will be the disc brakes next week. Don't stop with colorado videos because there are a lot just coming out of warranty this year. I am sure you will get a lot of views.

Well-presented and very informative video Matt. Taking photos before you dismantle is a great idea. I'd suggest taking photos of both sides. I just took photos of one side thinking they're identical but they're not and it can get a little confusing trying to mirror image the photos in your head. I've just done the full kit - new drums, shoes, wheel cylinders and shoe retaining pins. All went smoothly. Biggest drama was getting the old drum off. One shoe had ground itself 5mm into the drum and even with the adjuster fully backed off, nothing I did would allow the drum to release. I ended up having to unscrew the wheel cylinder and drill out the back of the shoe retaining pins. Eventually I was able to remove the drum!

Sounds like a real headache, glad you got it done though

great straight forward, no nonsense clip, could 'feel' the pinch with the hand brake spring, no 'rip, tear, shatter, as a 'sorta' retired chippie, you've nailed it 😉

G’day Matt, Good video for a fairly simple job, but things can go wrong quickly, as we all know. Photos are the lifesaver for sure mate. How many K’s did your old shoes have on them? I am left asking, why don’t these vehicles with a “3.5 tonne towing capacity” not have rear discs as standard? Thanks for putting your videos on you tube Matt, they are appreciated by many.

I guess the drum brake system is simple and cheap for them to use. Still the original shoes from new and they had around 185k km on them.

New shoes as you said, is quite simple, but adjusting the handbrake after, is a bit of a job. Especially removing centre console, in Australian not Asian language, and without braking everything haha. Maybe show how to.

You don't have to adjust them like that.

Put shoes in all done, Hub will not go over new shoe.. Adjuster all the way in ..??

A couple of things to check. I assume you have the correct shoe size, make sure the shoes are centered on the axle...just hold both of them and pivot slightly side to side to get them centred as best as you can. Ensure the hand brake is off. If you still have issues getting hub on wind the adjuster all the way in. If this works but it rotates too easily, wind out adjuster a little.

the hand brake cable adjustment could be up tight pulling the shoes on even with the handbrake lever down in the off positionn@handymatt9377
