Rear mount twin turbo 370z Pt 3

This week we button up all the loose ends to this fun rear mounted turbo 370z project. stay tuned for the next video we will be tuning and reviewing pros and cons of the kit.

Keep in mind that the huge amounts of tubing from the rear of the car will allow for cooling as the air travels towards the front. The shear length of the charge pipe should allow for plenty of cooling and negate the need for such a large inter cooler

The crash bar is blocking a large amount of the frontal area of the intercooler. Air is only travelling through a very small part of the intercooler. It seems silly to have that nice big intercooler and lose more than half it's cooling capacity.

pabohoney1 I've read some stuff that changed my perspective on that. People tend to think that the intercooler needs to instantly transfer the heat to the air by having constant airflow, but it can also just work as a sponge to transfer heat to the fins during wot pulls then slowly transfer the heat to the air as you are on the breaks or cruising. Just something to think about.

They're going very minimal with the build to get a base level cost. People tend to go with the Fast Intentions crash bar when boosting but that's probably for future plans.

Awesome build.waiting for more vids. From previous rearmount setup i had on my camaro i highly recommend to wrap the exhaust from manifolds to turbos to keep heat in.will help spool pretty good

What are your hp goal? my guess is that you can make at least 300hp per turbo, so i am afraid that they are to big for the car, especially because some of the power is gone, before the exhaust arrives at the turboes. I dont think the intercooler fresh air will be a problem, because the long intake pipe would help with cooling also.

You should wrap the exhaust to help a little with heat soaking or transfer to your cold side. Just a suggestion. This is turning out to be pretty cool. Hurry up and finish so you can drive it!!!!

Rear turbos usually don’t need intercoolers bc the air flow from the bottom of the car cools it down

Good call on the filter covers That's funny you mentioned that "illusion" about the intercooler being off because I was thinking something is going on here right before you said it haha. Are you worried about the exhaust heat being close to the IC piping in some areas? Header wrap wouldn't be a bad idea.

Have you thought about maybe welding some heatsink type plates along charge pipe under the car to act like a pre cooler? You could even wrap a coil of small tubing around it and weld it to pipe and run water thru it then wrap the lot and delete the intercooler altogether?

Could've gotten another 370 impact bar, cut a hole through for air flow and then bolt that intercooler on the opposite side since the outlets are symmetrical. The plumbing for the single inlet coming from the turbos can easily be rerouted I've seen your skills 😊🙏 Just my opinion tho.

Question about the oil system. Would it be possible to fit a small oil reserve tank and pump at the rear of the car feeding oil to both turbos in a closed system? So basically the oil is pumped in a closed circle, through a remote oil reserve tank then in and out of the turbos. Avoiding running any oil lines to the front of the car entirely. If so, would an oil filter be necessary in the closed system? I would probably take power directly from the battery through a relay switch. Maybe even a dead switch somewhere in the cockpit.

This is probably the one of the most common questions I get. And to be honest when I first set out to do this project I thought about this as well. But to give you a short answer, building a close system that would regulate pressure volume and temperature underneath the rear of the car is a massive undertaking and a ton of engineering. And at the end of the day really doesn’t benefit any, because running the oil lines the links of the car gives it actual time to cool as well, So really it’s beneficial just to run the lines in my opinion. the only downside is the noise of the return pump. Also if you’re going to try this type of a project and you have any questions about the oil system I will totally give you some advice if you just email me. Happy turboing.

Do you prefer welding a specific aluminum alloy for your intake tubing? I tried welding some cheap chinese tubing once and it was a nightmare. I have a decent ac tig. It might have just been my lack of experience welding aluminum.

Craig Bernstorf yes there is a few coated cheap pipes that do not weld good at all because the coating burns off and messes up the weld .....but most stuff these days even from eBay works ok.

Cool choice! Vertical flow intercoolers often are more efficient and provide more temperature drop than otherwise identically sized horizontal units due to the physics at play, too.

One question: Is it possible to take oil for the turbos from an independent source like a reservoir tank instead of using the same oil from the engine?

William Santiago Hi! Just my op but I’m thinking that if the oil is warm already in a reservoir it would work, probably just racing would be best but if it gets too hot then it would need a way to cool it down. His setup is the best in this application because of the engine cooling system does all that for you. I have been trying to find a way to do this with my VW Passat W8 ... not sure if I wanna try it, has very little room to do anything, compression is little high and ecu remapping is hard to find any info ! Would be a great challenge! Have a good one! 👍🏻

Tbh I would only do it that way. Use a simple res, rad, pump and thermostat circulating system in the boot. It'd be nervous having a long oil line so low in the cars body.

How many amps do you normally run for SS piping?

Hard to say it depends on thickness, I usually leave my machine high like 150 amps all the time and roll the peddle in intill I see the correct puddle then I correct the heat as I go running more heat of weld looks raised or bubbly and lowering heat if it’s getting too flat or hot. My guess is around 40-70 amps usually and of corse reducing heat as the piping heats up toward the end of the weld.

Some questions: Are you using 1 pump to feed both Turbos? If so, do you have any suggestions for the Y fitting that supplies the turbos? It’s runs at engine oil pressure, I used 1 -4 line and a -4 y to split right before the turbos.

Well i think that may be the case , we only added it because we had it laying around , but charge air temp with no fan on the intercooler at 218 coolant temp was 80 deg....... so I’ll be doing some additional testing with no intercooler and a much smaller intercooler with different core style too so I can reduce pressure drop over the core.

I've heard dynos are only good for making comparisons. Eg you needed to Dyno this car at a Dyno, make your mods, and run it on the same Dyno again to see how it actually compares as dynos can vary based on even settings entered.

I would re route those filters to the boot. Those rags might work now but for how long? Maybe for a show/ sunny day roller that'd be fine but after some miles the grime buildup will be pretty thick.

Could you explain how the fuel return system setup is? Where or what did you weld a fitting to? Did you use the stock fuel line to feed the fuel rail?

Yes still fed threw the stock line returned with a -6 to a bulk lead on top of the tank ......but yes I need to do o video on this I tried 4 different setups ......I just hate posting these type of vids cause the hole internet thinks they know better lol 😂👌 if you email me I’ll hit yo back with a list it’s easy and cheap !

Do you have diy to test if a intercooler has a hole. My FMIC got hit by a rock but I’m not sure if it punctured it or just a bad dent.. ?

You’ll need to cap one side and pressurize it ......you could get a boost leak tester ...... or get creative on caping the ends ....if you can’t fined a leak you can submerge it to make sure .....hope that helps
