Possibly the best tutorial for a reece bassline on the whole of KZbin. Stand up and be applauded.
@MrCrabpants15 жыл бұрын
Have to say i was bit skeptical at first when you were randomly knocking mids out and waving the eq in all sort of frequencies... but i can't argue with the end result sound sick! Never even noticed that filter device before.

Makes me glad to see someone else doing their bassline's while running on the fly. I kept reading everyone else bouncing samples back and forth but, I like running it on the fly myself like this. Big up's on showin' the heads its done by the way.

Man! Thats the best 10 minutes i've spent in years! That works perfectly! I've always tried to re-create Noisia/Spor kinda-synths and you've managed to push me even closer than i would get in the next 5 months farting around experimenting!! Got close to it with the malstrom using de-tuned saws but thor sounds way better! Thanks man! Btw, one thing that im also finding pretty tough is compressing snares, and your snare sounds punchy as hell, how'd you do that man? Gnna Upload some tunes soon. Thx

Just wanted to say THANKS for the amazing tutorial. There's a lot of us guys out there just getting started, and it's people like you that help us get a good crack at understanding how to use the latest technology to express out creative ideas. I'll be sure to check out your other vids. Max

@FinalFragment Try using an EQ with a single boost, somewhat steep peak, almost a notch if you will, and move it around the freq band on your snare. It should allow you to find the mid-range punch you were looking for in the sample and bring it out in the mix. Just don't boost too high and adjust to taste.

Im impressed man =] Very simply explained indeedy, Iv been scouring and trying many a neuro/noisia bass tutorial But this one seems the perfect solution, Just sat and spend 3hrs writing it all down and comparing with vst's as im a cubase user Nice one keep it up =D

This is a great tutorial. I was able to make it wobble on it's own by creating another THOR, muting it, then linking the frequency CV to LFO 2 on the muted THOR. I switched the LFO 2 to a saw wave and was able to get some gritty sounds. Thanks a lot though. I've been trying to get a sound like this for awhile.
@0tto77713 жыл бұрын
@tom8008135 to keep the two seperate, for dnb especially, find a tight kick sample that is hitting around the 100Hz mark, giving it a slight boost there to make it stand out. Then cut out everything below around 70 - 80 Hz with a fairly steep roll off. Pretty much do the opposite with the sub bass. shouldn't need a boost at the low end, just put a fairly harsh ( 4-6 db) cut where the kick is hitting so they don't conflict in those frequencies and your away. Hope that helps :)
@Neomind14 жыл бұрын
you're having phase issues with the sub, notice is much subbier in 5:27 than when you put the sub. This can be fixed by putting the stereo imager in Hi Band Solo, and the X-Width from 300hz. That way you won't be having phase issues with the subbass which usually sits between 0 - 120hz (sometimes goes even higher, but can be fixed with a filter after it).

@RNzGa On reason, you program all your music and make it yourself. :) All from scratch, but there are a variety of presets/patches for each synthesizer, effect, or what is called a combinator, which is where you place instruments (1 or more) and add effects (1 or more) to create an entire instrument used on a single rack :) Great program, but very different from others.

great tuts, gonna subscribe. Can you explain a little or even do a tutorial on how you create your drum and bass beats/drums patterns?
@Nikola80813 жыл бұрын
solid mate! craziest noise I have heard without hardware or granular sampling...i find it weird how the tutorials for Reese basses from 3+ years ago are better than most of the newer ones. I mean I suppose dubstep wobbles and deadmau5 style have made a big impact since 3 years ago (and crappy tutorials for them clogging up yourtube)...but the reese is still being used just as much today as it was 3 years ago
@FrederikMeyer14 жыл бұрын
You deserve an award for making this tutorial! Thanks a million!!!! :D
@0tto77713 жыл бұрын
@tom8008135 No one has replied to you unless I missed it. I know it's late but anyways. Basically you can decide whether you want a tight kick hitting around 100 Hz with a real Low sub bass (frequency will depend on your scale for each track) which is what is used for dnb so the bass comes out massively through a good sub. Or for most non electronic stuff the kicks low end is around 50 Hz and the bass sits above that. The two will always overlap to a certain extent but that's the basics :)

I actually do have a question but, it covers something different not gone over in its entirety but, it's still related. General Gain structure wise, where does your Lead Bass and Sub Bass sit at db wise in your mixer? I've come to a crossroad recently and I figured I'd ask someone who definitely knows what they're doing.
@killoubangbang14 жыл бұрын
Why dont you use the inner filter of the thor and making variation on it via LFO or the Env Mod (it's better so it triggers when the note is played) ? Cheers

@tom800813513 жыл бұрын
siiiiiiick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have 2 questions 1. Is the sub bass to give the bass overall warmth or to make sure that the lowest frequencies are being made use of or both or what? 2. My second question is related to the first possibly. I watched a music documentary one day and this dude was saying that the first decision he makes when he starts making a tune is whether the 'drums or the bass is going to sit at the bottom'. Does this make any sense to you? Should the drums...

I cannot reproduce this sound. My ear hears some kind of phase type sound going on. I thought it was the comb filter, but my settings are exactly what the video shows. There is also some kind of rise in the note on the second half of the bar, but my ear can't tell if it is the note or the automation. I wish loki showed the midi for this better. My attempt: ftp://ftp.christopherpisz.is-a geek.com/music/sounds/reason/Loki_Bass_Reese.zip Can someone help?

@tom8008135 [continued]... and the bass not sit at the same frequencies for some reason? What is the ideal lowest frequency? Should I stick to that frequency or is it all simpler than that i.e. just use my ears and do what sounds good? Thanks!

can someone tellme how to oad the thor synth with the initialized patch default, it always just opens first with the epic one and i dont wantthat thanks
@Kickerdk15 жыл бұрын
Yep, I found out of it (: Thanks though. Also what I ment was the way the sound changed, but didnt notice you made small bars in Thor. At the small point where there are no "bars" in the Thor, i just recieve a "Empty Sound", and that doesnt sound good at all. hehe. Pretty hard for me to explain. But I did try to move the frequencies around, to cover up that "Hole". Didnt quite work. Thanks a bunch for helping out ;)

this is the thing I've been looking for, I was mostly interested in that growling effect could you post a screenshot of your redrum setup? the beat sounds so aggressive and at the same time powerfull and clean, not colliding with reese thanks man, really helpful stuff
@guillom6915 жыл бұрын
ty for this tutorial!! Im also music producer (started half a year ago xD) Im new to Drum and Bass, and Im now exploring its universe. I really like the nasty, growly basses that it uses. Plus the breakbeat drumbeats that I love so much
@guillom6915 жыл бұрын
Basically I don't understand anything xD What I understand about it that its a Modulator that changes the envelope, frequency etc of a sound. I just don't know how to create a sound that I want. Maybe its experience. Cause when I try to make a patch with Thor, Im just messing with things around. How should I do the base in Thor, of course depending on what I want to do? Ty

fair play man, ive been struggling with my bassline as long as I can rmember. Good tut unfortunately I dont seem to be able to get anywhere close to this sound. Even with the basic sound at the start mine sounds a lot higher and ends up in a mess lol, not sure whats up with that :(

damn i have to get me reason 4, still using 3.5 atm and got no thor :(. amazing reece man! got some pretty sick basses out of reason 3.5 but never tried to make this style, might see if i can come up with something similar nuff respect
@FrederikMeyer12 жыл бұрын
can't you send a link to the patch? Mine sounds awfully wrong...
@proveyouwrong0214 жыл бұрын
Hey, sorry I feel like an idiot, I'm sure if I copy your steps from the very beginning, the actual note that I start out with sounds different to the one you start out with. Yours seems to start out nice and warm and growly and mine starts out thinner, almost as if there's some distortion on it to begin with. I'm going to start again from scratch but if you can shed any light on on perhaps a parameter change with Thor near the very start thats hard to see, that would be great. Thankyou.

Hey back again, not related to this but i noticed your using reason 4 and I have a problem which wasnt on reason 3. Using combinator and 2 malstroms and want to record pitchbend then tweak it after, only problem is i cant get to the line graph thingy where it puts the recorded pitchbend, i can edit recorded automation everywhere else,just not pitchbend uinsg the combinator so Ive had to allocate a rotary knob for it, does this make sense and if so u got any ideas cos i'm lost on this! ? ;)
