Am I worried that it still has the same 20.9MP sensor as the Nikon Z50? Not really, I had no problems with the Z50 image quality wise when I used it. Besides, if I really need images that are higher is resolution for whatever reason, I still have both my full frame 45MP Nikon D850 and Z7 cameras to turn to 🙏📸

Hi Adrian, first time commenting here. Thank you for all your videos. I currently own the Z6iii and the Zf. I want a small-ish (under 600g) set up specifically for travel photography which includes street photography and occasional wildlife photography (maybe 25-50% during trips). The Z50ii would have been perfect except they changed the tilt screen for the flippy screen which ruins my options for street photography. I know it's hard for some photographers who don't shoot street to understand this, but a tilt screen provides so much flexibility, speed and discretion. I guess I could make the sacrifice but only if the weight is substantially different and the DX lenses are worth the effort. I've gotten quite spoiled from the IQ of the Z lineup! I look forward to your next video about the Z50II. Thanks!

Hi Adrian, welcome to my world of issues with the Sony ZV-1, I had issues with it about 6 weeks after I bought it and Sony replaced most of the internals instead of replacing it. for the last 18 months I've had to use a powerbank as the battery would shutdown without any reason. and when it did I lost all the video that I'd taken. Looking forward to seeing what you think of the Z50II once you start using it as I'm thinking of getting ne next year.

Great video and look forward to seeing what you produce with the new camera. Not for me mostly because of the battery. With USB charging it's less of a concern but carrying and charging multiple battery types takes up space in my kit when I travel and the older I get the harder that becomes. Plus...I can drop the Z8 to DX mode and get the extra reach without a big megapixel hit and all the advantages of IBIS. If I were starting out from scratch...I'd be in but I have a large and mature kit and there is no place for this at this time. Cheers!!!

A comparison between this and the Z6iii would interest me. Specifically the degree to which there is a dynamic range penalty. I consider the resolution "deficit" a non-issue, but the smaller size and crop factor for shooting wildlife in reasonable light make it an interesting, lower cost alternative. If you are able to do such a comparison, I think a lot of people other than myself would be very interested in the outcome. Thanks.

Grabbed one myself to add to the Z9 & Zf as a capable, affordable, 1.5 crop factor extra body. The sensor gave some great images in my old D500 and contrary to some pixel whiners opinions, it provides plenty of resolution. Many refuse to look at all the cost evaluations that go into designing and manufacturing so I get the trade offs to offset the Expeed 7 and such.

Look forward to seeing how you get on with this wee camera, it looks like great value. Thankfully it has USB-C charging, so you don't need extra Nikon (expensive) batteries, just plug in a (cheap) powerbank and charge as you go. Modern autofocus that works, great video specs, kinda hard to resist..... Given that a good condition used D500 costs roughly the same as this new camera, for me its a no-brainer which to get. Only problem for me is deciding which lenses to go for, currently I have no Z lenses.

Interesting: 3 or 4 years back Daniel Norton did a portrait shoot with the Z50 mk 1 and that 24-50 f4-f6.3 in the Adorama event space. My first thought was '50mm with f6.3 - really ?' It turned out that with that camera/lens combo, the AF had slightly missed sharp focus on the eye much more often than I'd seen him do before. He never mentioned it, but he MUST have known. His style is to shoot quite rapidly, & and I reckon that (although it can focus accurately) the Z50 and f6.3 zoom just couldn't keep up with his regular shooting pace.

If this had a thumb stick and a stacked (or even partially stacked) sensor, I would have bought it. This camera is already 'better' in many ways to my D500, but if I'm going to plunk down money on a new camera, it will be a flagship level sensor tech at this point. I have waited this long. If I am going to get a mirrorless I want to take FULL advantage of electronic shutter tech. All that bellyaching aside, if I had no camera at all, I would buy this. I am glad there's someone out there buying this camera and getting great bird and person AI AF tech!

Adrian, i’ll be keen to hear your impressions when you get it. I’ve had a Z50 for maybe 4 plus years and was really hoping for IBIS in the upgrade so non-VR primes could be more useful. I too am debating Canon or Nikon for my birding efforts. I sold off a 100-400 after finding i really need to get more reach for our small eastern US birds. So my bigger linked question is which brands’ pricey telephoto lens do i go for.

The only thing that tempts me is that I am 70 years old, so putting the Z50ii on my 180-600mm for my hikes would be so much better than using the Z9. I might also then consider the 400mm f4.5 then for a super lightweight alternative. The bird detection makes all the difference and lack of it is one reason why I didn't buy the Z6iii.

Could you include reviews of older Nikkor lenses (using the FTZ mount) that may not have equivalents in the Z-mount family, such as the 16-80mm VR. Some of these lenses were rightfully expensive when first produced, but are now affordable on the second-hand market.

To those worrying about the sensor - it's still one of the best sensors on the market, taken from the flagship D500. Image quality is amazing, personally I rate it higher than Sony 24mpx sensors in a6400. Second, remember, it's not a D500 equivalent. It's a mid range camera. We still have to wait for Z70/Z90.

I like that Nikon has upgraded the Z50, which I purchased when first released. I loved this camera for it's simplicity. I am happily amateur and find that I would not take advantage of 99% of the bells and whistles of the Z6iii which I am also considering. My main complaint with the original Z50 was the autofocus, and that now seems to be addressed. I already have expensive Nikon glass and find that is far more important than the camera body when it comes to picture quality. All these negative reviews seem too be coming from pro's and for them I understand. But the Z50 ii seems to be designed for my type - an amateur who simply enjoys taking pictures of mostly birds and other wildlife.
