I think the most tragic part was how she thought she encoraged her dad to abuse her. You just know he fed her that nonsense. "I can't help myself, you looked so pretty and alluring." And she believed it was her fault, that she had any control over his urges. Absolutely heartbreaking.

The novel “Rebecca” was on the reading list in my high school- just one of the many novels I read for book reports. The writing and story were so fascinating and when I saw the old movie of the same title, it became one of my favorites. Thank you for this thorough, well-written stroll down Memory Lane! I knew nothing about duMaurier. Very enjoyable.

When I was just starting out as a proofreader at G.P. Putnam and sons publishers we got the manuscript for her last novel, World Without End (1979). There was such a stir about getting this manuscript, and we were told that she was a legendary writer. The book was strangely compelling, about unrequited but loyal love over a lifetime, and I never forgot it

Was World Without End, the novel that you read, ever published? I don't see it listed in Wikipedia or on Amazon. I'm wondering if it was published under a different title, and you are saying it's a novel not a short story.

This was really interesting, thank you. One of my very elderly neighbours here in Cornwall told me that when she was young she had known Daphne's family and spent time with them, she did night watch during the war with Daphne's sister on one occasion. She said Daphne wasn't as friendly and was a little more reserved with everyone. I wished I'd asked her more at the time, I bet she had some tales to tell.

Oddie, Rebecca is one of my favourite novels. I have read it 3 times and watched all the versions of the movie. It is an addictive read. The first time I read it , I was 14 years old and couldn't eat or sleep until I finished reading the book. My mom was very upset at me for not eating. I had a flashlight 🔦 which I snuck in bed with me. Thanks for informing us about the Du Maurier family story.

You have done a wonderful job of telling Daphne’s story Oddie. She was a very complex individual living in a quite dysfunctional family at an interesting period of time. Her father was rather a piece of work, and clearly did her no favours with regard to stability. I hadn’t realized the extent to which she identified with Rebecca, but perhaps that is why it is such a deep read. I enjoyed this very much, and, as always, delighted in all the little animations and special details you put in for us. The music was perfectly suited. I appreciate that Tamarra, thank you so much 😊 Absolutely agree with your comments regarding dysfunctional family, that she certainly experienced - albeit in a very nice setting - wealth will provide that decorative frame. I think a lot of people can identify with Rebecca, in the sense that most of us have an insecurity that there are others are better than us - and I think the large house Manderley is like our memories, a large brooding mausoleum with the turbulent sea (our emotions) swirling around it. @@ObsoleteOddity So true, those grand old mansions did provide a fine veneer of refined beauty that often masked the things going on inside them. There were also different sensibilities between the rich and the common people…the wealthy were permitted their “eccentricities” I also see those large homes as you do. They take on generations of emotional energy from all that lived in them, and the events that shaped them. Some objects do the same, which makes antiquing something to do carefully. Rebecca was so well crafted, as it interwove the various emotional tapestries of its characters, while keeping them distinct and separate. All those secrets rubbing up against each other provide the different emotional perspectives of the players in a building tension. I think we could enjoy living in one of those grans houses…as long as there was a staff to keep it running smoothly. Our home is a large Arts and Crafts era, and it has its own personality, but I can’t imagine handling anything more than our 16 rooms on my own lol. Enjoy the burgeoning of summer, and keep cool.🖤🇨🇦

@@tamarrajames3590 Oh yes those old homes do collect a lot of energy from the previous inhabitants, in fact some of them decide to stay on; and if you are the new owner mostly they will accept you as long as you are sympathetic to the building, and not planning on any modernisation or architectural changes. Well if I was ever so fortunate to own or live in such a beautiful mansion, I guess I would live in just a few rooms, as the French do with their chateaux, this saves costs and you still get to enjoy the lovely house and grounds in summer. I have collected so many antiques, I think they must like me, which is why they wind their way to me - and I’m very lucky that I’ve never really had any bad energy from them. I feel like I am a guardian of the past, I have rescued so many objects from the dustcart.

@@tamarrajames3590 Odette had a dentist appointment today in Zürich, so we drove in and I knew she was going to be awhile, so I walked around the old city, I haven’t been there in so many years - I have taken some footage for when I get time to upload it to KZbin. It’s very busy, and I’m always happy to get home afterwards - but it’s quite beautiful, all these interconnecting winding long and narrow streets with so many interesting shops. We are having a mini heatwave here, should be about 32° tomorrow - which is quite hot for this time of year, usually don’t get this heat to late July or August. Hope you’re enjoying your summer as well my friend!

Those pieces that come home are all of the positive kind, and just in need of a safe haven. Some I keep just until the person they are really for comes along. Oddie, This was fascinating about Daphne du Maurier. I saw and liked the movie "Rebecca" which was Alfred Hitchcock's first American made movie in 1940! Other famous opening lines in Classic books were Moby Dick......"Call me Ismael!" and also in the book "A tale of two cities" opening line."......It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...." "Rebecca" is one of those novels where to this day I vividly remember the experience of reading it for the first time as a teen and being completely caught up in the atmosphere of it. I feel bad for Daphne's sister, but for her to title her memoir "It's Only the Sister" is actually pretty funny.

I think the same thing happened with a friend of mine who ended up transitioning from m to f. As a male, his mother was continually criticizing him- emasculating him really. Now that he is a she, they are "best buddies". Needless to say, her psychological torment continues because her awful upbringing. Do i know it for a fact that she's not really transgender? No. But I've seen enough to make it a good probability. Deep psychological help was needed before anything.

I do so agree with you. The father - daughter relationship, like the mother - son relationship can sometimes develop into some pretty heavy psychological elements. I think Daphne du Maurier coped very well (the little I have read about her) because she was able to put so much into her writing which was probably very cathartic.

I remember reading Rebecca many years ago at school and years later I named my daughter after that said name. One day during lock down in the height of the Covid, I said let’s read it together.. its now became a wonderful memory sitting in the garden reading this wonderful masterpiece. When I was a little girl, in the 70's, I remember watching the Spanish translation of the Brazilian telenovela "La Sucesora". It was scary and very good, I remember that It was set in the 20's and there was a scene where they were wearing those strange bathing suits form that era. I learned so much about Daphne from this, and I love your voice. Rebecca was my mother's favourite book. She told me many times about how she'd gone on a vacation in her youth and was so captivated by the book, she spent most of it reading. I miss you, Mom.

Thank you for this video. “Rebecca” has always been my favorite novel and movie as well. The first time I saw the movie, I fell in love with Manderley and fantasized about living there. I’ll never forget the first time I saw Rebecca’s bedroom. It was love at first sight. Oh, those windows! ❤️
