The time has come for our month-long trip to Greece! As of this video posting, we fly out today and so I thought you might all like to see which art supplies I decided to take with me in my art travel kit. I also included a few spare items which will go into my suitcase, just in case I need them, lol! So much for packing light....😂
Please note that as I will be travelling, I may not be able to read and/or respond to comments as quickly as I usually do, but I will definitely find time here and there to look at them all, and I will also be posting updates when I can along the way, for you to stay up to date as to where we are. And yes, I plan to make a travel vlog video after I return home, so look out for that in a couple of months' time. Be sure to subscribe and click the bell for all new notifications of when I post! And thanks for watching. ❤

Have a wonderful trip. I do like the Art toolkit stuff, I added a couple of small bungee tie down cords with balls ( Extremus Switchbak on The big A) to the loops on the spine. This makes an elastic strap with the little balls that make this bag 100% easier to carry. You can either slip your hand in and grip the spine, or hold it by the little balls between your fingers. My new favorite mechanical pencil is the Uni Kuru Toga Advance. It completely retracts to a blunt point (no unexpected stabs or bending the lead sleeve), and it automatically rotates to prevent sharp edges. the lead sleeve retracts into the pencil as the lead gets shorter. Freaking brilliant, and not expensive.

Neat little kits! I would tend to take more than one sketchbook. Once, I forgot to pack my paints and bought a kit at my destination. I was the Isle of Man and I found a cheap aquifine set there, that I used up afterwards. Lucky you! You'll miss all of the Coronation malarkey. Well, I'll be at work and hopefully, it will be quiet. See you soon

I have a couple of backups, things I put in last minute, lol. I think we'll be boarding the plane during the actual coronation, so I guess we'll miss the whole thing. Ah well, I'm sure it will be widely available to stream after the event! 😂

Great collection to take. I think the only thing I would add would be like a sweat wristband (or the ones they make for when you wash your face so water doesn’t run down your arms) for cleaning off the water brushes or to use in place of the blue paper towels.
@MrsBarnabas
@MrsBarnabas Жыл бұрын
Genuine question, Lisa: How do you cope with a soggy wristband? Don't you get a 'soggy skin' (like having your hands in water for too long) thing happening? How do you manage not to brush it against your painting? What do you use for blotting, if you're wearing a wristband instead? As i said, all genuine questions, because I haven't been able to get my head around the practicalities. even though I've seen it mentioned loads of times elsewhere, no-one's ever shown themselves using it 'in situ'. .. 😊
@lisagoetsch
@lisagoetsch Жыл бұрын
@@MrsBarnabas I have two I keep with my to go supplies, so I always have one dry. I tend to keep it around my hand that’s holding my sketchbook so I can easily get to my wristband. I haven’t gotten a really soggy one yet since it’s just small, simple pieces so far. I guess my best response is try while doing a piece with less water. And air dry or toss in the wash/dryer regularly. And figuring out how much water and use it takes to get too wet helps with knowing when to stop using the wristband or switch to another method. I usually only use wristbands if I’m not at home painting so it’s just small pieces in sketchbooks. I haven’t thought about having to blot a piece… I guess having a paper towel or something similar would be needed. Good questions.
@MrsBarnabas
@MrsBarnabas Жыл бұрын
@@lisagoetsch Thanks, Lisa! I'm a plein air artist who tends to use large paper and a lot of washes, using my watercolour brushes, and rarely use a brush pen, so it'd get soggy pretty quickly, I think. It may be worth having one in my grab-and-go bag, though, because it's usually then that I'll have forgotten to replace the paper towel (also scrap paper!) and I hate using paper hankies - they just don't work the same. I had to use a tennis sweatband last year to keep a skin cancer scar safe from the sun, and it irritated me - _a lot!!!_ - but it was on my right arm, so that's mostly why it was a problem. But when did it become a thing to use them to stop water going up the arm when hand-washing? I've only heard of this recently! I must admit that the hand driers at our big local médiathèque are set at shoulder height! Whoever thought of that must have been a giant, because in the winter, to have water running up into long sleeves is no joke! But it must be the same person who decided to put in only one washbasin for two very busy loos! I don't think I'd remember to put these in my bag, though, as I constantly forget to replace the paper napkins I use instead. 🙄 It's crazy that I forget though - I've been doing plein air for 26 years and this forgetting stuff is very recent. Thanks again for taking the time to reply. I appreciate it.😊 Afterthought: Have you tried this idea going around of having the paint box fastened on the wrist?

That looks like you’ll have everything you need… with a few backups, how perfect is that? I’ve been getting ready for a short 6-day trip. I contemplated using my A5 Art Toolkit case, but it’s slightly too big for the tiny carry-on I’m using. I am also taking my pocket and demi palettes. I need to find one of those tiny plastic mixing palettes like you have, that would be perfect to take with the art toolkit palettes, they do not have enough mixing space for me. Can’t wait to see what you create during your vacation!

I'm glad you added the little bag for your suitcase - I always like to have a back-up! Your Art Toolkit pouch looks a little bigger than my 'grab and go' bag (it'll take the rest, but an A6 sketchbook and home made A6 watercolour block) and we have much the same kit in them! In fact, my back-up-in-the-suitcase is actually my full-size plein air kit backpack, minus easel which I used around the hotel and locally. Hugs for you both! 🫂🫂

Thanks for posting that! I love to see what others have in their travel kits. I have labored over putting a few together this past year. I have an Art Tool Kit as well, only the smaller size case along with the same palette (your larger one). Since they were having a sale, I also purchased the largest paint palette, which I didn't realize came without pans. But I did find tiny makeup pans that fit from Amazon because I really didn't want to pay the shipping to get the pans from Art Tool Kit. I've split half of the paint palette area with more mixing space (empty pans which I've painted white). Since my travels are generally only a matter of days rather than weeks, I've never ran out of paint. But I do wish I had purchased the larger case instead. I can only store the smallest sketchbook inside and the bare minimum of drawing tools and waterbrushes (1 of each). So far, the only sketchbook I've found to fit is the Tumuarta 3.5 x5 inch, but it has 300gsm cotton paper (and no sharp edges). It has really held up well and allows me to paint on both sides of the paper. The water and rinse cups have to live in my bag. But I do have one waterbrush and some of those blue shop towels in the kit. Those shop towels can be rewashed and dried several times. They are great! My little set of Neo II's have to live in my backpack as well, along with some watercolor pencils. But what I really love about my little case is that is also can double as an easel. I have some magnet clips which I can place on the strip of fabric next to the zipper to hold my palette. Since I have 1 waterbrush, I don't worry about bringing a rinse cup. I actually have a 3 different travel kits (one that is even smaller than this one). My larger one has a tripod and easel with more supplies, but it weighs about 12 lbs (including my camera equipment), so I can't bring it everywhere with me. The smallest one is just drawing, a few pens, Derwent drawing pencils), and a mechanical pencil, and a sketchbook). Whew....Sorry for the long post. Travel art kits just spark joy in me!

I am sorely tempted by the folio sized palette! I figured since I tend to use A5 books the most, that the larger case would be better. The smaller one looks so cute though! I'm forever cleaning that case! Cat hair also sticks, as well as lint! 😂 Otherwise I do like it, and I'm glad you have the same sorts of art supplies too. ❤️

Travel well. Great video, however, this one is costing me money as I list new art supplies I “need”, thanks for that 😂

Thank you! Many of these items were purchased because of other people's videos, so I'm passing it on. 😂

Can you tell me if there are plein aire workshops. My wife and I are visiting kefalonia and she is a painter ( I'm a sailor)?

Workshops in Greece? I am not sure - I did all of my sketching just on my own. But it's worth looking up online if there are any local ones. Urban Sketchers is a global community, and they'd probably be a good place to start looking. I hope you both enjoy Kefalonia! 🙂

10:31 do you remember where you purchased this water pot from? It looks like it goes down quite flat

I think I bought it at a local store Senior Art, but I did a quick search just now and there's one on Jackson's. It is called a collapsible lantern water pot. I've linked it in the description now, if you want to check it out. 🙂

Can a standard metal travel pallet fit in this?
@BeckyTregear

The standard size ones are a bit too chunky to fit into the small pockets where I put the Art Toolkit palette, but they will fit in the large pocket underneath, where I have the box of crayons. At one point I even had one in there on top of the crayon box while I was travelling around, lol. Edit: Now I look more closely, that big pocket will also fit a 24 tin, and possibly even a 48, though that would get pretty tight for having anything else there too.

@BeckyTregear thank you for the very fast response. I've been looking at these and they seem great but I love my pallet and am not keen on buying the ultra slim ones they sell. Thank yo

@@user-kj5sl2gx7k Hopefully it'll work out for you if you get one. They're pretty versatile...it lasted the whole way around Greece too and is still going strong. No damage or tears in the fabric.
