The next 2 episodes are even more amazing. Between Klaus and Rebekah, I see both sides. Klaus was horrible to her but Rebekah did cross a line by calling Mikael. I was so conflicted during this storyline because I love them both so much.

I feel for all of them. Born to a powerful witch mother who seemed to save the majority of her love for the husband who abused her and who put conditions on the love she had for her children. Raised by an uncompromising father who abused Klaus the most, but who showed no love to any of his children. They learned to stick together while at the same time they hurt each other by following the examples of their parents. And finally - they've been stuck in a state of arrested development for over a thousand years because they can't grow old which makes it so much harder for them to grow beyond their past and learn how to be better. And all any of them really want is to be loved despite their faults and to be forgiven for their past sins... the healing grace of unconditional love, and only Elijah is smart enough to know that the baby has the potential to give that to all of them.

Based on season 2 I am going to say that this read of Esther and Mikael isn't really quite right. Esther very obviously lived in terror of Mikael after losing Freya, and her love was most acutely directed towards Klaus but based on how much all of them save Klaus especially Rebekah and of course Finn loved her in The Vampire Diaries the idea she didn't shower her kids with love seems quite incorrect. Klaus himself acknowledged this. Mikael certainly didn't love them in any easily recognizable way, apparently he doted on Finn when he was a little boy, he seemed to harbor some degree of respect for Elijah, Rebekah he saw as closest to his lost Freya and several times mentioned loving her best, and Henrik I mean he is clearly absolutely wrecked by his death. With Klaus I'm gonna go ahead and say that in a terrific irony, his initial intense fondness followed by intense hatred towards Klaus is all down to Mikael seeing himself in Klaus. Cycles of abuse and all. Kol alone seems to have been really an afterthought in both parents eyes, probably because coming in order after Klaus means that he was probably the result of duty and not love between Mikael and Esther, which is likely where his issues of not feeing like he belongs stems from.

I can’t choose sides in this conflict. One one hand, Klaus, whatever his intentions, was emotionally abusing Rebekah by controlling her and not allowing her to explore romantic relationships. Whether he loved her while doing it doesn’t matter because she was terrified of him because of the way he treated her. On the other hand, Rebekah not only put Klaus’s life in danger, but Elijah too and potentially even Kol and Finn who were even more vulnerable daggered. It was very reckless but I could see why she felt trapped.

No defending Rebekah on this one. Compared to What Mikael did to Klaus over the years, getting daggered is like getting sent to bed without your dinner. Knowing the sheer terror, trauma and damage Mikael inflicted on Klaus since he was a child, to then set him on him like that is simply a line you never cross. Unforgivable betrayal.

Not just that, mikael literally destroyed entire cities to hunt them down and she knew that. The house they created in New Orleans, not only klaus’ but even her home, elijah’s, all their allies, the vampires and the werewolves would have all been killed, destroyed. All of this just because she wanted to screw her brother’s adopted son. They could have run away, but no. Let’s summon the one who will kill thousands of people to kill her brother, like mikael was a dog who would have announced himself from miles away. Klaus escaped by miracle that night.

To be fair Klaus controlling Rebekah love life was kinda justified. One of her first lover was an vampire hunter who put her whole family to sleep using the daggers, without Klaus resisting the dagger effects all of them would've been dead by now.

Exactly, and what happened just last episode. A random guy was nice and her judgment is immediately impaired, and Hayley nearly died. Hayley would have died if not for Elijah.

that's what people can't seem to understand...that klaus knows Rebekah's weakness is love and he knows people will use it against her and she won't listen to klaus, so he punishes her .if she had just listen to him and be more careful in her relationships their relationship would've been different

they never clearly showed it but I also doubt marcel's intentions. I think he wanted control over the city more than he wanted Rebekah. otherwise, why wouldn't he even look for Rebekah once after they fled? almost a century passed. he never sought her once.

Well keep in mind from his perspective she abandoned him, literally choosing Klaus over him. But also you are right, this comes up over and over again, they can only learn to be together when she learns to value him over freedom and he learns to value her over power. Because of their own respective abuse, and their own respective reaction to it, amplified by their vampirism and cemented by habits of unaging (the normal means of letting time change your heart), they clung to the ideas of freedom and power respectively to make themselves feel secure and at peace with themselves. Given the interracial dynamic I feel like there might be a weird bit of social commentary going on there.

Because the plan was for Rebekah to come back for him she didn't, In season 5 Marcel tells her "I waited for a century, you didn't come back for me" Which makes sense because in season 3 Klaus says he doesn't ran he disappears meaning it was easier for Rebekah to go back for him than it would have been for him to look for them which would have been stupid because then Klaus would have known he was still alive and was still against them to being together so the plan was to wait which he did, for a century.

Rebekah took it to far to call Mikael but at the same time Marcel was a fool to let her go all the way through with knowing it could've got Rebekah killed aswell but Klaus i feel like he should have punished Marcel more then Rebekah and Klaus also should have understood what Rebekah was going through because of Klaus and just gave a less of a terminating punishment then trying to make her miserable he should've just daggered her for a bit but that's just my opinion.

the first time Rebekah betrayed her family for a man he suffered over 50 years trying to kill himself every single day, tormented psychologically in an endless torture of self-destructive misery and pain. That's already 100 times worse than everything he ever did to her, especially considering that by his own admission the only punishment he ever inflicted upon her is the dagger which pain last an instant and you don't perceive time at all so it's like you took a 10 seconds nap for her.

@@Kal911 That wasn't intentional though, Rebekah did not intentionally betray her family she just got played and had no concept of the Hunter's Curse. But I mean at the end of the day they obviously deserve infinite suffering because they love suffering, very very deeply they are strongly attached to the bonds of pain and anguish they have reinforced for themselves. They are, at the end of the day, beneath all their charms, simply monsters. The hope story is great precisely because, unlike most of The Vampire Diaries, it gives some actual reason for their existence that can be justified. And of course ultimately, well, I mean for those who know the story, them continuing on in the existence they live now is simply not an option if they hope for redemption.

Rebekah is probably the least monstrous of the lot, excepting Finn, but sure no arguments she is just a horrible vicious person, but Klaus is absolutely the tyrant even over his own family. That's the whole point of the show - he is in a sense already Mikael, every bit as bad as Mikael was before they became vampires and worse - he is the greatest threat to his family, he is the greatest threat to his daughter. Its the process of discovering unconditional love, hope, that slowly allows him to break the cycle of abuse and with his family who needed to to do the same for themselves, restore themselves as a family to raise up Hope, and then...well, meet their destiny.

@@Kal911 she did not betray her family bffr and the dagger is excruciating pain klaus himself said it when he got daggered and it’s not a short nap when 90 years of your life has gone by and you basically spent it in a jail because your crazy brother likes to control your life not to mention how she had no freedom for 1000 years
