Rebel Moon Review | Rebel Moon Part Two Review | The Scargiver
With almost NO fanfare at all, Rebel Moon: Part Two - The Scargiver limped onto Netflix yesterday. And while no one had any high expectations for this movie after the disappointing total FLOP of the first entry, Zack Snyder still managed to put out a WORSE product. But what do you expect from a creator who thinks that Lens Flare + Slow Motion = Storytelling?
The Scargiver attempts to develop its characters in the worst way possible, NOTHING of import happens until 56 minutes into the movie, and the whole film has this cringe-inducing air of self-importance. Zack Snyder is the only person on-board the Slow Motion Express toward a future that has Rebel Moon in it. Everyone else is staying behind and waving, hoping that train goes off a cliff. Please, bury this franchise and never resurrect it.

Isn't it a massive space empire as well. Couldn't they just orbitally bombard the village and lose the grain without much issue? It's not like Arakkas in Dune where the spice from a single planet is integral to maintaining their empire, it's one village one one insignificant planet that probably doesn't even produce 1% of the Empire's total grain reserves.

I winced. Many times. Many many times during Rebel Moon : The Third Nipple. The first was figuring out how much grain 30 people could harvest in 2 days and mill in a place that ... seems to have no flour mill, and yet has an anti-grav sled. And where no one with a scythe seemed to have picked up so much as a broom or a shovel in their entire lives. So why send a dreadnought after 100 sacks of flour? Don't know. The second was the "I forgot to write your personality, here's a wall hanging to explain". Fak me. Little House on the Character Transplant. The third was the paintball guns. It probably seemed like utter peak genius in Snyderbrainz but it doesn't suggest plasma, molten metal, power, and threat - it says paintball, with teenagers larping. The fourth was every long-winded, pompous, stupid speech to fill in bad writing: Jimmie the Robot, every character, General Titus doing "the grain is our power" like he's stepped out of RoP declaiming "do you know why a stone looks down?" As HW said, the mystifying part is not that it's bad, it is, but that Snyder seems to think it's art of matchless brilliance.

I do not understand how people have taken so long to realise what an absolutely terrible film maker Snyder is - unless he is working with someone else's material. Awesome DOP but should not be allowed anywhere near the writers room. I thought Man of Steel was going to be the BEST MOVIE EVER with Snyder directing and Nolan producing and then out came Sucker Punch, a film he wrote and directed. Incredible visuals but a simpletons attempt at structure, narrative, character development and story. Incredibly inept. He has done nothing to change my opinion of him. With his visual skills though, his movies do make the best trailers. I would love to see his skill applied to someone else's material again because visually he is very, very talented.

The back story scenes were grueling. Why would any film tell you it is about to do back story narratives? It was so forced upon the audience, as if to say, "We know you have no idea who these characters are. So we will stop the film's progress here in order for our heroes to have a sit down, pow wow, where they tell you the audience where they each come from." Back stories are supposed to be seamless; something the audience discovers on its own. As for the handout of the banners, the audience is again expected to suspend reality. The village folk just met all their "guardian heroes". At which point they are immediately told that they have all of five days to harvest and prep their grain, train the entire town on combat techniques such they can effectively fight against trained soldiers bearing heavy armor and armaments. Then to add insult to injury they must all dig tunnels and trenches, secret hideaways, and mine them all with hidden explosives. Yet after 3 days of harvesting (by hand and without the help of their one and only robot or any of their draft animals), the blond girl presents each with a hand crafted needle point banner. Safe to say that she would have to have been the fastest needle pointer in all of human history. But good to know that she wasted all her time needle pointing when everyone else is harvesting grain by scythes. And how much grain do they harvest? Hardly enough to feed the crew of a giant dread-naught spacecraft, let alone a starving galactic wide empire.

I hope she finds something better to do eventually because I do think she has talent, and she’s definitely been in some works that were well-received. If anything, it seems like most of the bad/less good movies she’s been in were of the “epic blockbuster” variety; put her in a movie that’s meant to be a one-off or part of a smaller franchise and things are more likely to turn out okay, at least from what I’ve noticed.

I literally thought of a way that would have made these two movies slightly better while dozing off. Part One 1) Mutiny on the Dreadnought while in orbit over this moon. Sabotage of the FTL drive. Most food stores destroyed. Mutineers escape, as do some high value prisoners being transported to prison. 2) Basic plot of Seven Samurai minus all the travel; and not individual "Samurai" but squads of soldiers instead. The "bandits" are the Imperial troops from the ship. 3) Big battle. Some time during the battle you get a plot twist and it's revealed that the "Seven Samurai" are either loyal Imperial troops who staged the mutiny to stop the Admiral from defecting to the rebels, taking the Empire's greatest ship with him; or they really were awful people that deserved their sentence. Could mix some good "Samurai" in there too. 4) Battle ends with rebellious Admiral winning. His troops aid in the harvest. FTL not repairable with supplies on hand. Part Two 1) Seeking of the Rebellion, while also looking for critical components for the FTL drive that is still inoperable. 2) Planet hoping, possible recruitment of rebel leaders/champions. 3) FTL repairs commence, but local fleet on the way. 4) Rebel fleet assembles. 5) Big space battle, with the dreadnought arriving in the nick of time. 6) Possibly boarding actions to capture as many ships as possible. 7) Ends with rebel fleet now a real, growing threat.

A lot of issues annoyed me but I think the one that stands atop the crowd is that one asshole with the rocket at the start of the 'conflict'. HE opens the tunnel, and the Admiral is standing directly in front of him. He then aims away from him and shoots a bloody ship.

The cinematography was great. I don't mind some slow-mo, but it was way too much, almost like a way to pad the runtime. But what bugs me are all the nonsensical scenes. They can see the people inside the house but not underground. They need grain but then blow it up anyway. The baddies are so evil that they have no heart at all. But then, when she pretends to be a wounded soldier, they try and care for her like normal doctors just before she kills them. So many redundant courses of actions. Why have all the royal members kill the family and then force her to kill the child and then blame it on her? That could have been done in so many other logical ways. If I can't relate to anything that happens because of illogical reasons, then I don't care what happens at all.
@thechosenone93
@thechosenone93 Ай бұрын
There’s some inconsistencies with your comment. They didn’t destroy the grain;I looked closely and notice that they actually didn’t destroy it. They only aimed at the barn with it and destroyed that. The men you’re talking about were just doctors who would deal with casualties on the battlefield. It’s obvious their personality and demeanour was different to the military. Plus their role was…attending to injuries… They tried to frame the greatest soldier their government has produced by proclaiming that Kira killed the whole royal family? That’s not illogical,that’s simply a corrupt government trying to Type up loose ends before taking over?

Do they ever explain who the child of fire is? Or who the scargiver is? Apparently hack Snyder not only has directors cuts lined up he needs "2 to 3 more films" to tell the whole "story." I threw up in my mouth writing typing that

I was thinking the ships scanners had literally perfect imagery down to their hair and clothing of everyone inside the buildings through the walls, but they couldn't detect the people hiding in tunnels they literally landed on top of? Also, when the battle kicks off they all like - I dunno, wait their turn to jump in? Like both sides. So so bad, like unforgivably bad, not even cult classic "drink every time they go slow-mo" worthy.

I am a fan of sci-fi but I have never stumbled across a more trivial, obvious, even stupid movie like this one, to the point that I started part 2 and gave it up a few minutes later. With all the good sci-fi stories that can be turned into valuable movies, I wonder what made Netlix slip on such an unwatchable banana peel

As many others have commented, it's an awful shame that some really good actors were wasted, and that nobody can constrain Snyder's use of slow-motion. I know people ridicule the slo-mo used in the harvest scenes, but it could have been effective here - if seen through Kora's eyes, it could have emphasized her feeling of peace, belonging and community in the village (e.g. time standing still in a moment of happiness) ... But because it is also used in every single fight scene or explosion too, there's no meaning behind it. Despite the deluge of borrowed scenes, characters and plotlines from other stories and movies, it could still have been enjoyable if the production design had been more original/better thought through. Problem is, every where you look, every line of dialogue delivered, and every plot development witnessed just becomes an obvious checklist of references that do nothing more than feel like a cheap rip-off of the original material.

They just had to up the stakes even if it is something like this.

I hate slow motion. I thought we had gotten past the use of it so much but it's a lazy mans tool. Don't tell me something is cool by using slow motion for tension , show me its cool by doing it in real time. Jason Bourne would be furious

slow motion in action scenes should only be used when someone does a flashback of it,to show details of what the audience cant see when it happened in real time.

4 more to go. It is a trilogy in 6 parts you see. I think the proportionality the most disturbing. Where is the wheat? That Dreadnought will go through that amount in a week. Where are the guns and ammo? Cora only brought 6 men on horses? without a ship full of weapons? What?

The fight scene involving Kora are even more terrible and even slower than Ahsoka. You can even see that those stunt men are just waiting to get hit or shot or slashed by Kora. It give men second hand embarrassment. It looks like a cartoon fight in a live action movie. Even fight scene in Steven Seagal movies looks better than this "ballet" of martial art fights in Rebel moon! 😂
