I Disagree! 😁 The old saying lube isn't needed, isn't just for glocks! The forward assist on a AR really is there just to ram it in until it fits. Loading 357 into a 38 is really fun until it blows apart, both exciting and story worthy.... although at the end you'll need a replacement and maybe surgery. If you get away with loading hot 5.56 through a trailer park cheap. 223 barrel and eventually get rid of that AR to a friend you'll always look at that AR and smile knowing the dirty things you did to it before dumping it and not looking back.

Years ago (so many years ago) we were doing SWAT training, working on dynamic entries with shoot/no-shoot targets, and all that fun stuff. Most of us had personally owned weapons (ARs) with a couple issued Colt M4s a 635 and a 639. One of our guys had a CETME (basically an H&K 91 that he could actually afford ... back then ... on a cop's salary). Things were going well until it came time to do a practice entry with him and that beast! We hit the doorway, split off from the stack, "pow", "bang", [Earth Shattering BOOOOOOOOM!!! BOOOOOOOOM!]. It was like, who needs flash-bangs when we had THAT damn thing? I can't imagine how much worse it would have been with the tiny, short barrel of the 51P. Wait ... I don't have to imagine. I'll freeze frame a couple shots from that video. YIKES! In an enclosed space we'd likely all be blind, deaf, and never need haircuts again. LOL!! Damn, now I wanna shoot it.

I have one of these little fellers. I actually love it. Minus the whole flash banging of yourself and everyone else around you every time you fire it. Mine however has been nothing but reliable. Currently, it has a PA Hyper Tap brake on it.. I did however drop an HK21E buffer into it to replace the anemic buffer system it had in it previously. Additionally I have an SBA4 pistol brace on it. I had to dremel out some of the sheet metal out of where the extension is, but that shouldn't effect the integrity of it.I guess I will have to keep an eye out on it for sure. I also pout a surefire LMF on it too. Because aesthetics.

5:52 I'm positive you already know this but you can adjust the angle locking piece on roller delay guns (specifically HKs) to slow down the cyclic rate and potentially slow this particular wear. Might also lighten up the recoil a bit since the rollers won't be careening into the receiver at the speed of light.

So did PTR ship this with undersized rollers causing the bolt velocity issue? I'd wager the bolt velocity is the cause of the fun extraction issues too. I figured this kinda thing was Century fare not PTR. Apparently not.
@christopherreed4723
@christopherreed4723 4 жыл бұрын
Undersized rollers aren't the problem. It's shortening the action that causes the increased bolt velocity. The H&K action is held shut during firing by a combination of mass, the force of the spring clip on the bolt carrier forcing the bolt forward, and the vector changes the recoil energy has to undergo to retract the rollers (losing energy at each change). Alter one of those elements and the behavior of the whole action changes. I haven't handled an HK51 copy, but if the bolt carrier is shorter than a full length HK91's, then the mass of the bolt assembly is going to be less. Which means the bolt assembly will be accelerated harder by the recoil forces, resulting in higher bolt velocity. The key here is, well, the key inside the bolt, which has angled surfaces that the rollers act on to force the bolt carrier back and permit the chamber to open. Greater angle on the bolt key faces = less efficient transfer of recoil energy = slower bolt velocity (and - maybe - happy Hop?). Ultimately, we're probably seeing the reasons here why the HK51 was never a widely produced or popular weapon IRL.

@@christopherreed4723 Yup, good write up! If you want a compact G3, get the G3K. There's no alternative. Sadly modern day PTR is pretty ass by comparison to the old JLD built guns, which also had their fair share of flaws.
@libertyhog1428
@libertyhog1428 3 жыл бұрын
I imagine they could remedy the high bolt velocity by changing the angle of the locking wedge that acts against the rollers. That is what delays the action from opening through mechanical disadvantage. H&K made different angle locking pieces for different chamberings, different barrel lengths, and suppressed. I wouldn't be suprised if PTR just used a standard N.O.S. locking piece from a regular 308 because it's cheap (but quality) surplus.

If your delay wedge and recoil spring are both in spec, the bolt carrier should never even touch the buffer. The buffer is just there as an emergency out-of-spec impact safety to keep the gun from beating itself to death after 100 or so rounds. What alarms me about this is that shorter barrels create less backpressure and should lead to *less* rearward force than a full length 16" barrel. To me that says it's using *way* too steep of a delay wedge (shorter barrels usually need slightly steeper than longer barrels, as in higher degree number, but maybe this one is too steep) and probably too weak of a mainspring. If this was a new gun built using new parts, that's troubling. But the good news is that an HK51 delay wedge and a fresh HK91 recoil spring would probably fix this thing ight up, assuming that you've been keeping the roller recesses in the trunnion clean and the thing can go fully into battery. IT IS POSSIBLE that the gun you bought, being that it is a pistol, was not intended to be shouldered. Roller delay guns need a different recoil impulse at the bolt face to work correctly when they're tightly shouldered versus when they are not. It's possible that this was never meant to be shouldered, because the recoil force needed to operate it without a shoulder behind it is significantly higher than with a shoulder behind it keeping the gun stationary. I have observed that when I let small people or people who are afraid of .308s shoot my finely tuned match guns and don't hold them firmly, they get frequent FTEs, and when I tune a gun for one of these people, they complain about harsh recoil and accuracy suffers. It's not a locked breech gun, it's a roller delayed gun, and how you hold it affects how it works much more than it would on a locked breech gun with a gas driven action. Now I've read that the one to use on this is the #18, or 50 degree wedge (or alternatively #22A for a 45 degree wedge, which may be a better, softer-shooting option, but could potentially require you to shoulder the gun more aggressively for reliable cycling), but I can't say for certain because I only build full length rifles and while I want a shorty, it hasn't been a priority yet.
@009013M3
@009013M3 3 жыл бұрын
Additionally, roller bulge in the front happens because of failed alignment of the receiver to the trunnion. Roller bulge in the rear happens because the bolt isn't supposed to strike the buffer, and when it does, the inertia of the bolt head rapidly decelerating causes the rollers to deploy. You are correct in your assessment of excessive bolt velocity being the cause. Headspace can contribute to this but I suspect it has something to do with the gun being a pistol and having the wrong delay wedge.

My PTR is a full length and works great. Love the thing. The shorter PTRs and G3 in general look cool but I don't think the design is really built to work at that length. It CAN be shrunk down and still work, but stamped sheet metal can only take so much abuse. Being shorter, there are less rollers in the system iirc which means the bolt will be slamming back alot harder into the back of the receiver. Think of the G3 like this, it's basically a direct blow back battle rifle with some fancy mechanics to make it slightly less direct blowback, and the one you have has less of those fancy mechanics in it. Your round count is very low but honestly I wouldn't expect those things to last more than 1 or 2 thousand rounds overall

I know this is a year old, but the roller dents sounds like a locking piece/roller adjustment to get it into better bolt speed ranges. My PTR built C93 had 47 different parts that were all out of spec resulting in, to quote you, "epic double feeds", but getting the proper locking piece and headpsacing based off the shitty trunnion/barrel job did wonders for the recoil

I first shot the G3 when I was in the US army in ‘87 . Regular plastic stock ( good) and the telescoping meat tenderizer that I found real effing un pleasant . I have a PTR 32 that I have a wood set for and I love it . It’s been a flawless gun that I broke in as they requested , as tedious as it was . That little 91 would really benefit from an actual g3 surplus stock , with maybe even a heavy buffer. I don’t really believe in forking out money for a tax stamp, but this would be one gun i might . It’s a shame you are getting roller dent, I’m not sure if that could have been solved by running a surplus stock from the beginning . Maybe one of the Greek EBO tungsten filled carriers would help you too. . That broken hammer is cringe as well. I love my PTR and am happy with the x39 chambering . I kind of want the 12” model next, but just on ergos alone I think I’ll go with a g3 surplus stock and send in the sbr paperwork.

Hmm. There was another KZbinr who reviewed the PTR MP5 clone. He also faced the roller dent problem, but that was most likely caused by his suppressor. He also had a hard time with customer support.
@christopherreed4723
@christopherreed4723 4 жыл бұрын
I looked into the matter when I got my full-length PTR-91. My takeaway was that to attach a suppressor to the '91 and keep everything in that very narrow happy zone dictated by the combination of brute force and split-second teutonic timing that is an operating HK/PTR-91 a new locking piece is essential. That probably applies to unsuppressed HK51 clones with aggressive compensators on them as well. Now, the question is, would a mild dual-purpose device like the Griffin Hammer Comp require the new locking piece all the time, or just when the can is attached?

I have a PTR-91 F. It had a problem with cycling when I went hunting with it. I didn’t know I could drop a mag, cycle the action and charge the gun as fast as I could. Still got the hog. Anyway they were super responsive and I had the gun back with a new bolt head and cocking handle in 10 days. That’s pretty good. That bolt carrier is massive. If I were to get the shorty, I’d want the PTR-32. I think 7.62x39 is far better suited for an SBR. The amount of gas I’ve seen from those monsters is less than ideal. You’re in a grey area support wise. You did take the gun way out of spec. No that this exonerates PTR completely from the deformation in the receiver, but you admittedly made some mistakes clearing charges and taking it down. To be honest, I’d just avoid that build. It works very well as a large klunky DMR. It is big robust and badass with Hk designed parts. You put undue load on non spec delicate AR buffer parts and got a ripple effect. The big question is how it would have fared if you left it completely stock. Also how did German SF/Police rig it? Good luck. If they are cool like Ruger, you will get one back fixed. Update us.

I have heard of a rifle referred to as a shorty HK that was used by a detachment of the British Army and RAF in Northern Ireland in the early 70s. It was carried in civilian vehicles and selected because of the short length and ability to punch through doors and windscreeens. Couid this be the gun? I've found that many soldiers aren't all that interested in the fine details of their kit so couid not get an official name for it. I've been wondering for a while what gun it could be and this seems like a contender, Is there a use for short barreled guns in battle rifle calibres or was their use just a compromise?

I am pretty convinced they used the 53 (intermediate cartridges) instead of a full power MC51 or MC51K. Armalite, for the longest time, had a hard time at very short barrel lengths unlike the 53. Naturally, the 53 would have been their choice.

I DID have good luck with a heavy buffer from HK parts and got the trigger work done from some guy (Can't remember his name) who specialized in HKs. I started to form 1 with a clubfoot stock after testing it on a full size. During testing of optics and other parts, it became almost comical to get routinely thrown off of gun ranges because mine was "too loud" or scared other shooters away with the concussion.....Also there was an incident with prone shooting/range fire. I had a decent muzzle break and all in all found it to be soft shooting and very controllable....but at the cost of being heard from three counties over. Anyway, I feel your pain....I hope it turned out okay for you.....I eventually sold mine too......I wanted to love it...but it became more of a liability.

My pdw has been great! I did damage a part (my own fault) and PTR was great and sent the parts for free. I only own one, but it’s been a great experience. I have a few videos of it on my page. More to come.

It sounds like PTR might have put the WRONG Recoil Spring Weight for a 308 and put the one for the 7.62x39 for the amount of damage that your receiver is getting or your Rollers are TOTALLY OUT of SPEC! Either way you have are 100% Correct o having a Stick of Dynamite with a lit fuse you need to send that weapon back to PTR for a Warranty Repairs or REPLACEMENT!

I've had one of these for 8+ years, with a flemming DIAS trigger pack; 4000+ round count with full auto mag dumps, and have had only one problem(buffer spring retaining pin came out once.) Sounds like pretty s*** luck to me.

Sounds like usual issues around tuning. Recoil spring tension is too low, causing excessive cycling speeds and extraction issues, as well as roller wear and back plate deformation.

I recently got a PTR 91. It started out working fine for the first 100 rounds or so. Now it has problems with ejecting and spent cases get stuck as the bolt tries to feed another. Heard it was part of the break in but I have my doubts. Hoping 1100 wasn't wasted.

Having owned one myself once you hit that 300 round mark the rifle functions perfectly. Had the same issue the first two times to took it out but now it is fine.

I believe roller dent can be repaired, it seems like it was actually caused by the malfunction it suffered where the bolt got jammed to the rear. If I were you, I would see if Arizona Response or Parebellum Combat Systems would be willing to replace the entire barrel assembly, to make this either a K or a full size G3. That's not necessarily an inexpensive choice, but in my experience the full size is way more practical and fun to play with, and the K is just another step up minus the velocity penalty. I'm not sure the reliability of US made parts but I imagine it would be close or maybe even inferior to the surplus parts you can get from German G3's. But by now the price point is probably stupid similar since surplus is drying up.

I sent the gun back to PTR for inspection and repair. Pretty sure it has the wrong locking piece in it.

@@Hoplopfheil hope they solve it. But regardless this gun is just not ideal, it's conflicting by design, and I'm sure you already know that since you seem well informed.

Question - how did you get your muzzle break off. Some are not supposed to come off but I don't own that model. I've had 3 gunsmith & hours of oil soaks to no avail. Any advice?

Isn't .308 out of that short barrel basically functioning ballistically as 7.62x39? Guess the PTR-32P might have been the way to go.

Man crazy how one’s customers service changing from one person to another 🤔 I had a decent time explaining my situation but luckily my issue was with the bolt handle catch falling off 🤣 man I was pissed but at least the PTR91 was still functional. I told PTR customer service about it and they took care of that plus they replaced the extractor (I did not even know there was an issue). I will say that your issues are pretty crazy but regardless they should take care of you.

I’d try a different locking piece. The carrier is cut down. Bolt speed is to high. Ps. Ptr apparently doesn’t engineer stuff. They cut cut and weld. Send it to ptr. It’s fucked up

Dang that blows My PTR/Century collab Cetme c308 Sporter has about 2500 rounds through it in about 3 years. Had a bad magazine with a sticky follower but that's the only malfunction I've had. Seems these are either great or garbage with no in between.

I love my C308'S. I have 2. Never had a single problem with them. Got an HK91 that's great, too. My PTR9CT has around 1500 rounds through it with no issues, other than one feeding problem with a 40 round polymer mag that was due to cheap spring.
