Today we start a new build. It is a 2012 Kia Sorento SX AWD. It hit a deer and caused quite a bit of damage but that was nothing compared to the damage the previous owners did to the interior. It looks like an easy job but getting parts might be a challenge.

My car looked like that after some crackheads stole it. Found it two days later all wrecked and totaled. It was a 5 year old infinity G35 that had never been rained on, much less seen salt. Had less than 30k miles on it . If I had caught them, auto theft would have been a death penalty charge. Loved that car.

When I did drywall I had a dutchman who worked for me. He helped prop up boards when I did ceilings......(an 8' long 2 x 4 with a 24" long nailed to the end at 90 deg)

I drove a 2019 Kia Sorento rental from Massachusetts to Florida down 95. Handling wasn’t great, the interior noise from the road was basically the sound of a space shuttle launching. It’s like there’s no sound deadening in the doors or floor. The seats are stiffer than imaginable. I drive a Cement Truck for a living, and I’m telling you it was a rougher ride than a 80,000lb truck with almost no suspension. It’s a good value for a first car for like a teenager if you’re the kind of parent that buys your kid a brand new car for their 16th or high school graduation. It’s just not a comfortable ride. Good thing you aren’t trying to do 2020+ Silverado right now. Company next to our has a 2021 Silverado that stuffed a deer in the grill. Fronts been off the truck for 2 months waiting on a radiator and coolers. Like simple parts, nothing crazy. Can’t get it 🤯

Standard sea shipping from Asia to Chicago (China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, etc) is three months or 90 days. That's actually the pre-2020 standard shipping portion of lead time. Been dealing with that for many years when the companies I've worked for sourced parts over there before they arrive in the facility for US assembly. My guess is that Kia/Hyundai bundles their oddball parts orders every week or so and puts the containers on a ship. Another fine example of the just too late inventory system.

Hey Scott, longtime viewer, and I own an auto body shop. Filty cars are the norm from the auction, sadly. I fix a lot of repo cars and they all appear to have been lived in by some sort of throwback humanesque thing. As far as the valve cover goes, Ebay seems to have both right and left valve covers. Not sure which is correct, probably the left side as it was less plentiful. A new left is on there from kia in Korea. I have ordered quite a few Hyundai and kia parts from Korea through ebay and they all showed in about a week... hopefully someone has one more local to you. Keep up the good work, and keep out of the pile.

That sludge in the engine will slowly dissolve with normal oil change intervals. BUT those bearings will be toast... Its like it was a repo and prior owner just drove it in the ground.

Yeah, I got a van, previous owner had invoices for oil changes every 5k, pulled valve cover, sludge city, engine purrs like a kitten, great gas milage and plenty power, but boy am I worried. Guess I'll drive till it craps, Synthetic every 3k now.

yeah I'm thinking that too. I mean were they literally driving it with little to no oil in it? I worked with a guy who had an F150 with the (wonderful) 5.4L 3V. At break sitting around for some reason the topic of oil changes came up. I said, yeah I have to do mine pretty soon. He chimed in "didn't you just do it"? Me: Last year, 4500 kms ago Him: why so soon? Me: what are you talking about? Him: I have 25000 kms since the last time Me: sell that truck NOW the engine is toast. If you go 500 kms past 5000 the cam followers are pooched, the cam lobes are worn, the phasers are pooched, the timing chain guides are pooched, I bet even the top of the valves are pooched.

I'm not sure that I'd expect that engine to go high mileage. Cleaning it out is risky. Seeing what the oil returns look like when the valve cover is off would be instructive. I might clean it out as best you can and let the owner know that they should start an engine rebuild fund.

@@bobmazzi7435 first course of action is a few oil changes to hopefully dissolve the sludge anyway. Looks like it was pretty much dry by the dipstick lol

@@JamesTK One trick I use is adding a quart of ATF just before the oil change. The higher detergent gives the inards a bit of a clean. But, on one this far gone I'd be afraid of breaking chunks loose.

That will be a nice care when it's done. I have a 2012 Kia Sorento and it's only been into the dealer for non-maintenance repair once. Cost me 380 bucks over 10 years of ownership.

I have done repos in the past and most are nasty. I have done interior homeowners inspections. If their car looks like this, so will their house. This rule applies even if it is an expensive house in a nice area. I heard from my friend with a moving company where a crew refused to do an executive move until the filth was removed. When you see the large amounts of once decent clothing lying on the floors of repopped houses and cars; it makes you wonder, again.

Me: where the F did it go? I JUST had it in my hand!!! On a similar note: I live and work in my shop. My previous shop cat was fascinated by everything I did so he'd sit on the work bench watching. I'd say "hand me those needle nose" he'd look around and KNOW I wanted him to do something but not know what. One day I was looking for my leatherman. I KNEW it was on my bench looked for an hour. Then...hmmm I wonder, dumped out the garbage bin I used to keep next to the bench. Yup, there they were. You see, when the cat jumped up to watch he'd move shit around and push it to clear a spot and he pushed them right into the garbage lol. taught me to move the garbage can hahahaha

I know it's a cheap car and people tend to neglect and abuse them, but I know several people with Sorentos and Santa Fes with well over 200,000 miles that still look and run great because they do the basic routine maintenance.

After 30 years of fire and EMS I can attest to the nasty smell(s) coming from that interior, that was disgusting to say the least. Poor cleaning gnome, gonna need a respirator mask…otherwise the build is looking good.

I lost my 2014 Nissan Sentra to a Great Pyrenees dog. Almost $7000 estimate. Almost $4000 was for the airbag and seat belts. Insane that the insurance companies insist that every related part has to be replaced and it has to be new. I could have gotten airbag parts from a pull a part and sent the seat belt tensioners for rebuilding. Insurance wouldn't allow it.

Yes when you see a car that has an interior like this one you just know that the car has not been taken care of mechanically. Anybody that would ride around in that pig stye is not going to give a rats behind about mechanical, evidence of that is engine that is out of oil.. I wish the owner the best with this flip, personally I would not touch that one with a ten foot pole. I have no doubt that the outside will look good when Scott is done and probably the interior will clean up real nice. The engine with lifter clacking and oil light on is not long for this world.

a friend was a detail dude at a new car dealership, and the stories he told me. They brought Febreze by the case lot. Claimed it worked on everything. Worse one, was a NHL hockey dude like hauling his wet dogs everywhere, and the SUV smelled so bad. lol

you are correct about wildlife and ac. I had a wild pig hit my volvo bumper and kill the ac dryer. He did not survive. Car needed a new bumper,ac dryer and washer water container.

As a car audio installer, I've worked on dirtier cars. If you call someone out on it, they usually say "I have kids!" Like that's an excuse. Kia's near me are usually leases and get treated like that until they go back.
