Back in '05 I totaled my '99 Grand Am. A few months later I decided to rebuild it in my driveway. Stripped all the front-end sheet metal off. Then tied a rope between the radiator support and my pick up truck and yanked it back straight. 270k miles on that car now, still going strong.

@johnhufnagel Exactly! For years, I always drove a nice, new car. Corvettes, Camaros, Celicas, new F150.. I've had them all. Two years ago, I was looking at a new car and I can't get over the high prices. I simply refuse to sign up for a $90k car. Instead, I bought a beater from a friend and I'm loving life. If I need to make a long trip, I just rent.

Are you talking about the surface rust on the undercarriage? That is nothing for the Midwest lol. Because of how much salt is used here often times you’ll see cars with rotted out rockers, rust patches on doors, hinges, wheel arches, etc. and they’re STILL going. Most people here have common sense when it comes to what they consider safe enough to drive in terms of rust. No matter how much people clean their cars here, rust is almost always what kills them in the end when it comes to daily drivers. Otherwise people just store their cars inside during the winter months.

I hear what you're saying about spinning and melting the plastic. My wife's INFINITI has a plastic rear hatch cover. Here we have to get new license plates every 7 years. When I went to remove the old one, one of the screws was stubborn and ultimately spun and melted the RIVNUT out. Fortunately the hole it left was just the right size for a 5/16" RIVNUT. So with a hole modification in the license plate she's good to go. I used a stainless screw and some anti seize. Hopefully in 6 years it will come out easier.

In 06 I had my head on crash (not my fault) I bought back the 93 Escort. I had just put an alternator, ac compressor, new tires on a set of GT rims and normal maintenance. They didn't want to deal with it because it was basically scrap with the buckled floorboards and cracked transmission case. Cut a check for almost 1,500. And parted it out for almost that amount. Best $500 car I ever bought. Plus was paid out 1,300 when some idiot rear ended me, that cost me 100 for a bumper and the time to bend everything back.

The SCT was supposed to come with a front wing that went under the bumper but most dealers never installed them. Or the ones that were installed were destroyed from speed bumps and inclined driveways. It happens. My plan was to make a custom 350-400 HP AWD vehicle. its a lot easier than you think, if you can find the donor AWD drivetrains
