Rebuilding a TOTALED Rolls-Royce Ghost For Dirt Cheap In The Front Yard Using GM Parts... PART 1

In this video I am going to rebuild a Rolls-Royce ghost that was totaled out by the insurance company. The goal of this rebuild is to spend the least amount of money on repairs as possible, that means we have to fix all the parts instead of replacing anything. And we are going to use GM parts to fix the original Rolls-Royce parts with. Some would call this a redneck rebuild or redneck engineering. But I would call it "the extreme budget exotic car build".

No need to complicate things more than they have to be :-) my buddy is a cheap bastard, but so am I. I ended up spending a bit more time on repairing the busted parts but he sure saved a ton of money in a process by not having to purchase anything but the materials such as body filler, sand paper, primer, paint, etc. I think between fixing the fender, the door and the quarter panel I probably save him somewhere in the neighborhood of 10K in parts.

That's what I thought at first, but then I put a magnet up to the door and it stuck to it, if this door was aluminum it for sure would be going straight into a scrap pile. That's why I love working with steel, it's a lot more forgiving and much easier to work with

We literally pulled the donor door out of a pile of scrap that was in the back of my friends backyard, in a way we also got lucky because of how close the contour of the donor door was to the original Royals Royce door. We had to tweak things less to get a desired result which is always a big plus !

I think you are talking about my frame rack, I do have it. Not getting rid of that thing anytime soon :-) but since I'm doing this repair over at my friends house I can't easily bring the frame rack with me. And also the damage is light enough to where we can make all of the necessary pulls with a simple comealong. If damage was more severe than it would require the use of the frame rack but in this instance,comealong will do just fine :-)

Once again some negative guys in the comments..You guys should go and watch the other guys from Collision Hub channel. They have some stupid protocol and swear on everyone who is not following it. There are many ways to repair a vehicle successfully. Here is the moment to say once again your video is very enjoyable to watch. Only thing i would consider carefully is rust protection on the inside of the door , where the back of the weld is. Also same thing when using spotter to fix the quarter panel. i think rust can develop after some years if not coated the inside with wax or epoxy or some other type of coating.Maybe some kind of direct to metal undercoating brushed on.Cheers i hope everything turns out OKAY
@fix206
@fix206 3 жыл бұрын
We did spray the inside of the door with some primer to prevent things from rusting, but the inside of the quarter panel was filled with some sort of a foam, it was possibly sprayed in there for sound deadening purposes? But I tell you what, I watched a video a few months back on this one Russian KZbin channel, and the guy was actually repairing the vehicle that he already did some work on about five years prior. He was specifically talking about the weld spots on the inside of the quarter panel from the spotter work that looked the same after all these years with zero rust. Generally the cabin area of the vehicle stays dry as well as the trunk area, otherwise you're get musty smells in the car along with mold. There is for sure nothing wrong with encapsulating any type of exposed metal anywhere on the vehicle, it's just less crucial in the trunk or in the cabin space. The way I see it, even though I live in Seattle area where it rains a lot and there's quite a bit of moisture in the air, if I leave a bare piece of metal in my garage it will stay there for years without getting any surface rust on it let alone start rusting through.

This door was un-repairable, until you came along!! Pretty unconventional, using part of a GM door on a Rolls-Royce. The purists would be freaking out. But once it's finished, nobody would even know that the Rolls was ever damaged. Is there anything that you can't fix? Looking forward to seeing more progress and the Rolls returned to pristine condition. At the end, can you do a cost comparison as to what a conventional repair with all new parts would have cost and how much it actually cost doing it your way? Would be interesting.

@@Grimsaviourit's all good man. I've made a decent life for myself as an automotive mechanic. I'm not a collision specialist or a body guy. You are correct, a used door would be better. Anything that is not factory condition can be argued as unsafe because it is untested. Manufactures spend mega dollars proving to the government that their vehicles are safety compliant when it comes to collisions by crashing them in controlled environments with high dollar testing equipment. Probably need to replace the a pillar too while he is at it because it wasn't designed to ever have the forces applied to it the way that the damaged door shows that it has... because safety.
@fix206
@fix206 3 жыл бұрын
Grim, I do appreciate your concern for my friend's safety. Buying an undamaged door would have been ideal, but I normally don't even buy cars that cost as much as the used door does for this vehicle 😱 It is my friend's car and it was his call to get the door fixed. But really, when it comes to safety I would say that this door is at about 98-99% integrity compared to an undamaged door. Getting door skin replaced is a standard body shop procedure (I know I didn't replace the whole skin, just part of it). Door skin is made out of thin sheet of metal, it doesn't really carry a whole lot of structural strength (Saturn brand cars didn't even use any sheet metal for fenders, door skins or quarter panels, all of those panels were made out of plastic, because that's not where the structural integrity lies). Most of the door strength comes from a door shell that is made out of much thicker/stronger metal and also there are reinforcing crossmembers that are welded into the inside of the door shell. The way I see it, there are much less safe repair options out there that are 100% approved by the OEM manufacture such as partial frame rail replacement, where you would literally cut half of the damaged frame rail off and weld in an undamaged peace in its place.
@Grimsaviour
@Grimsaviour 3 жыл бұрын
@@fix206 if the car was a 2005 or less I would agree with your repair idea. That was the turning point for car safety when manufacturers started using many different types of high strength steel. We used to do repairs just like that, removing part of the skin and rewelding it on was normal. As a professional nowadays we strictly follow OEM repair procedures because of liability. I fully understand the costs involved with repair vs replace, and it's often a battle we have to fight for on behalf of customers to their insurance company. The door being as expensive as it is, sure makes it a tough Decision for a friend.
