I bought a ex rental Ferrari F430 which was left abandoned at a track experience place. The car was taken apart 11 years ago to try and fix an issue but never got put back together. Now i have to rebuild the engine along with the whole car and the gearbox, whilst keeping it all under the budget.

Use the burnt transmission as an assembly manual for the original disassembled one. And hopefully if you are missing any bits, the ones from the burnt transmission are salvageable. (or vice versa, if you choose to rebuild the burnt one instead)

Others might have commented on this, but when using the "flange sealant" and running the bead on the outside of the bolt holes, you might have oil finding its way out by the threads and down the shaft of the bolt. If the bead was on the inside then you guarantee that the oil will not reach the threads. But there is no oil pressure there, so most likely there will be no issues :) Love the build and the channel!

Mat, I’m not an expert but have built quite a few forged engines as a hobbyist and always put the bearing into the block dry and then build lube/oil only between the bearing face and the crank itself. My understanding was that oil between the rear of the bearing and the block, then it has a greater chance of spinning a bearing.

Good decision on the main bearings. I have no experience with these engines but I suspect the Maserati engine may have a revised cover plate or inset that has a small shoulder that fits in next to the bearing to stop the bearing from sliding forward. Probably simplifies the parts count and is possibly more reliable. Thanks for the vids. The short animated explanations on concepts are a nice touch too.

Today it was confirmed what I said yesterday about the shell bearings. They should be installed totally dry into the block and main caps and into the conrods and caps accordingly . Infact the surfaces should be degreased and clean and dry . The reason is that in service the loads on the shells actually 'bed into' the metal and create ahigh fiction bond which eliminates any movment . By adding lube to those sufaces you lose the correct tolerances and eliminate the bond . The shells will move and ultimately spin wrecking all your work .Its a pain but undo all the bottom end and reassemble with dry shells then lubricate just the journals . Only a tiny amount is needed ,not great gobs of the stuff ,
@JohannesKonow

As an engine builder, I'm sitting here in utter disbelief. NOBODY, EVER, greases the bearing saddle, whether its the block or rod end. The bearing journal, yeah, not the saddles. That thing is going to spin a bearing and end up a boat anchor. And while I've only been doing this for about 50 years or so, I've never even heard of someone putting the pistons into the cylinders before the crank is installed into the saddles.

Sometimes the age old saying buy cheap buy twice comes in. You run beads inside of the bolt hole or around it not just on the outside of a block. The reason the half clams are different tabs is because they intended in putting it in a 4wd powertrain so they changes some things on the bottom end to suit. The tab on the the half clam is smaller because they had more material on the main bearing, they basically beefed up the block. BMW should take a leaf out of their book instead of kidding on that B58/S58 (which are 17yr old designs btw) bottom end will live a good life next to a 4wd powertrain.

Not sure if anyone else has said it, or maybe you did it, but it’s always worth pre-assembly with plastigauge to check the main/big end bearing clearances are within spec, particularly if using an unknown crankshaft.. also check axial endfloat of crankshaft with a dial gauge

3:34 and 5:51 I don't think you're supposed to lubricate the back of the rod/main bearings. You'll end up with a spun bearing.

The most British thing I have ever seen and lovin it.... Father and son rebuilding a modern and extremely complicated Ferrari engine in a shed but with the skill that would put a Ferrari engineer to shame.... meanwhile the dog is walking around making sure everything is up to scratch. 🙇‍♂️

I am pretty shure that you would be able to put the gearbox back together when you have one which is already assembled. I worked on transmissions for the 458 and when I saw the parts for the 430 for me this looks fairly easy.

At least with that transfer case you can learn how it's put together and use both to make a workable one, so it's not a loss but a win.

As has been said a few times, crank bearings go in with dry back faces to the block. The locating tang is not absolutely necessary, I learnt this from an ACL bearing specialist, the clamping when the caps are tightened will hold them in place, that's why it's important not to lube the bearing backs. Really enjoy your channel, great viewing 👍

For TDC its much more accurate to use a plug stop, or with the head off, a piston stop, about 1CM down the bore. Bring the piston up against the stop. Turn the protractor to zero. Then bring the piston down and past BDC and then up to the stop again on the other side against the stop. Read the angle. True TDC will be the angle half way between the reading and zero. The wobble of the piston on the clock as you reach TDC is enough to give a sloppy reading, enough to not have true TDC. Its called the plug stop method as you can use an old spark plug with the middle bashed out and a bolt screwed through it to act as the stop. Common place when timing the magneto on vintage motorcycles.

Like the fact father and son doing stuff together. Mechanic myself and good to spend time with each other. When you put bearings in you lubed under the bearing shells.allways tought this is a no no. Ask whatis lubrication for? Bearings into block and conrods aren't suppose to move. Putting anything between bearing and block/conrod will change clearances especially assembly grease. Might think small differences doesn't matter but remember we are dealing with thousands of an inch. Please give feedback if you think i am wrong

The guy before me said he'd do it in six years. I'm a helicopter pilot with science background, tech skills, and I couldn't commit to Tavarish (Friend in Russian?)'s timeline. I couldn't do it. Kudos to you and your dad. Havint seen you rebuild a car so well Porsche wanted it, watching this, dude, my accolades to you and Dad. Talent. Yeah, that's a thing. Perserrverance. That's another thing. All that and then having the cojones to rebuild an engine from scratch despite no schematics ... hat's off to you.
