Important Correction: we welded the Bimmerworld front subframe reinforcement plates on the topside, but we should have welded them to the bottom side (which would explain why the shape of the plate didn't really line up perfectly with the topside.
@speedacademy
@speedacademy 5 жыл бұрын
It's reinforced in the right area, so I think we're ok to leave it as is, although it does raise the engine a bit with the plates on the topside instead of the bottom. Not ideal, but not the end of the world either. We'll keep an eye on it for any cracks forming.

So you replace the clutch and flywheel... Finish the build... Drift it... Sell it to Throttle House... and the clutch fails on them shortly there after. LOL, good thing you went upgraded.

You have to weld the whole plate if you don’t humidity Han get where there no welds which can cause corrosion in between the subframe and plates

i really appreciate the consistency of these build videos. i did some build videos (about 30 or so) like 3 years back and it was so time consuming setting up shots, researching (so you dont look like an idiot), filming, and editing. i eventually gave it up because the car burned down but your channel has kept my itch scratched for awhile now. i got a thumbs up the other day when i was wearing my speed academy shirt too!

great series guys, just FYI regarding the guibo: check if it has thicker and thinner parts, because if that is the case, you have to mount it in a specific way: the torque needs to transfer through the thicker part of the rubber, not the thinner part. So make sure you put the bolts in the correct holes. There might be arrows on it to help orientation, but not always. blog.bavauto.com/14113/bmw-how-to-properly-install-driveshaft-flex-disc-giubo/

That part is called a guibo, the center of the drive shaft is the center support bearing. You should change this as well I am sure it's gone too. Also do the CDV delete it's a cheap part but makes a difference.

Is this an e46 specific problem? Ive never done a specific sequence on any e70s, e9xs, f30s, etc. and never had an issue with leaking. I just do the 8nm + 90 and 180 depress.

I have an e36 but it’s virtually the same. I would change the steering shaft bush to a solid one, and also do the rear subframe enforcements!
@IWK333
@IWK333 5 жыл бұрын
Yup, the rubber part you changed is popularly called guibo... In reality, it's just another type of universal joint/u-join, it's primary job is to allow for a certain change of angle in the driveshaft, it's only secondary job to dampen the NVH/cluth engagement as a bonus 🙂 The things in the middle are (at least in e36 and e39, I believe e46 is same) a classic u-joint and a center bearing 🙂 Not hating, just trying to be informative 😁 Also, as a few people have mentioned, rear subframe mounts (on the chassis) are a serious weak point, you should definitely consider reinforcing it before drifting the car 🙂 PS I now started thinking that my e36 might have clutch pivot issues, as the clutch is acting funny 🤔 Thanks, I completely forgot about the possible issue with it and was considering replacing the whole clutch set (expensive) or replacing hydraulic components (labour intensive) 😊

Food for thought... Did you know in drag racing they use heavier clutches? Just like fly wheels on old farm tractors, heavy flywheels store energy the more energy on tap/ available at any given moment means it will be easier to break the tires loose. In drag racing the big heavy flywheel makes it easier to do a burn out when one dumps the clutch so the motor doesn't stall...What is a drifting, but a big burnout while cornering...? Everyone is obsessed with lighter fly wheels and I don't always think it's the right choice. (trying to get people to think about their purchases)
@goldenhide
@goldenhide 5 жыл бұрын
Very true, I think the converse is more track and touring races as the lighter wheel "revs down" slower as it bleeds energy on a downshift, which obviously has it's own pros/cons. Again, something you want in certain applications, but not others.

@jsinghmoments
@jsinghmoments 5 жыл бұрын
@@speedacademy Do it! I highly recommend it! I changed from stock headers to CPI stepped ones on my Z4M and even without a tune it feels better. While getting the headers installed, the indy told me that on their spec m3 racecars, they added intercoolers, oil coolers, etc, to keep the car cool on track, but kept getting high engine temps. Since headers had a high point penalty, they didn't want to do that, however when they switched to the euro headers (and removed the other stuff to keep within class specifications) engine wouldn't overheat as easily. I thought that was pretty surprising, it's one data point, but if you're going to drift the m3 may as well do it now, while everythings easy to reach :)

most S54B32 performance clutch dics with absorbtion springs like the one in this video ; are ment to be fitted with the spings towards the flyweels ( designed to accept the spring carrier without interference ) if put the other way the spring plate woud be contacted by the pressure plate fingers. this setup can only be put together this way and designed to be like that ; the Sachs ZF pressure plate / clutch combo is the same and can only be fitted to a lightweight flywheel as the oem dual mass is flat and does not accepte the inverted clutch disc. . but you are not incorrect to mention this as yes a clutch disc is usually ment to have the spring plate outside.

I'm not against using plastic on a car, but a plastic throwout bearing? Seems like a strange engineering choice to me. Also, would it be fair to say that if the average person bought this car, it'd probably be a bit of a money pit? That is, if you just wanted to make it stock from the way you bought it, the average home mechanic/tinkerer would probably have given up at the cost of things? Not knocking the choice to buy it, but maybe something to point out to viewers thinking about buying old M3s - it's going to save you money to buy a nicer street car than to fix one like this.
