My cousin, Billy, from Alberta was help me with a hose disconnect. I give him a handful of zips, and I said ‘disconnect all those hoses and put matching colours on’. After he was finished, he called me over and said,”I put all the matching zips, but I can see how that’s gonna help with nothing.” He had put two matching colours on the disconnected hoses, and none on where they connected. 11:44

Having your own crimper for hoses will be a benefit in the long run as you have other items that need hoses from time to time . Initial cost is high but worth the expense in the long run and beats having to wait to get one from another supplier. I look forward to your videos and the various items you repair and restore to function.

You’re doing a nice job, Matt, there’s a KZbinr captain in Kleeman rebuilding an old backhoe in order to loosen the hydraulic lines. He’s using an air chisel with a blunt end to loosen or shock impact the threads on the nuts, Hydro lines, look him up and try it. It works for him.

Yeah, all those spray can degreasers have different instructions. Most say to spray a warm/hot engine, let set, then hose/pressure wash. I am not one to read instructions (you know real men don’t need instructions or manuals), hahaha..! Then a friend enlightened me. Another friend enlightened me on using the proper tool(s), I see you discovered it on your own with those new proper sized wrenches. It really does make a job easier, and you are young enough, you will most likely be using them again. Great video series, Thank you sir.

Now that you have invested in the correct size wrenches (spanners here in GB!) and pressure washed the goo from the work area I can now relax and watch the video without thinking "why doesn't he just buy a decent spanner and how can he work amongst all that oily crap!" Seriously impressed by your enthusiasm and knowledge and am looking forward to watching you breathe some new life into the old machine. BTW - if you have much more oily crap to wash off, I found that spraying some light oil (paraffin / kerosene / diesel) onto the crappy area and letting that soak in for a few hours would help soften it up before applying any soap / degreaser .

You can buy a cheap crimp tool for a few hundred dollars and also the ferrules for the fittings. Then buy your hose in bulk reels. It will be a lot cheaper than having a hydraulic shop make up those lines. Especially handy when you have fittings that have to be "clocked" a certain direction to each other. It will pay for itself over time just in not having to take a leaking hose into town to get if fixed while your machine sits idle.

You should get a set of nice 1/8" split point drill bits to make a pilot hole for the stepper. You don't "NEED" a pilot hole for a stepper, but it sure does make things go faster. #30 bit is common for 1/8" rivets and are cheap and easy to come by in bulk.

As far as making your own hoses, I have found that after buying the crimper (even used) and hoses and fittings and all the different size dies you have way too much invested. It’s easier and much cheaper to buy from surplus center. Even if you need a special fitting on one end you could buy the premade hose from surplus center and take it to a shop and have them install the one fitting you need and you would still have much less invested than having them make the whole thing for you. As you know, the large diameter hoses can get very expensive quickly, and your machine has a lot of them.

It seems to me the way you did the dozer by dismantling it was the best way. I would definitely take it far enough apart to make it easy to get to the major issues. I like Castrol super clean in five gallons and pump spray bottles. I have gotten better results for a lot less money than the foam stuff in metal spray cans. I would also get some bilge diapers to put under. They will not absorb water but will only absorb grease and oil. I believe that VEVOR has reasonable equipment to make your own hydraulic hoses.

I know someone may have said this already but get an air hammer or a battery powered one, put a flat faced tool on and give a few braap's to the stuck nut hydraulic fitting and it pop's open. Guy called Captain Kleeman here on YT is fixin an old Ford backhoe and he has had luck with that method. That tracking issue may also be because the other side's track drive motor is going out. You can get those as rebuilt units and sealkits also. Dirt Perfect had that issue on his 120 that is in JD colors. If you gonna pull the engine you might as well fix or at least check the wiring since you have access to it. Least it would greatly reduce the change of a fire and electrical issues later on. Some people have used surpluscenter for their hydraulic needs. Others have made a deal with a local shop for larger quantity of hoses. If you are planning to replace all the hoses that crimper could saveyou some money plus you do have other machines with hydraulics... Also if you want more things to do. You could always think about changing bushings and/or line boring the boom and bucket and changing worn out pins. There are company's that do that and if remember correctly Dirt Perfect has a video where he does that to his JD 120. But yeah great video. Keep doing your stuff.

I had a frozen faucet bib in my garage and had the guy plumb the new one to hot water, with the plan being if I used a pressure washer it would have hot-ish water. I borrowed a friend's pressure washer and attached it to said hot water bib and went thru two tanks of 75 gallons of water in the water heater. I hit my n. side of the siding (vinyl, NEVER done before), back deck, grill (some mouse incursion in the tank area), underside of van (important 'cause they salt the roads here), Propane tank (it NEVER looked so good!) and some of my concrete slabs/walks. The warm water helps. In some future incarnation you might wanna find a good used Steam CLeaner - I see Mustie1 got a broken one and with some work got it working great, for a small fraction of a price of new one.

So he proceeded to remove all pipes and mark them with zip ties, calling me down when he was finished and he had marked them all with the same colour ties. Great... The drone had a view of a wonderful bit as flight. So from 32:00 as back to beginning of this post...."this is a big project"....might have been followed by..."don't try this at home"...but I want to qualify that as a semi retired maint person...who drilled a bit of Jeep fender and worked to pop a vexing dent with a slide hammer...Z(today)..so as a viewer I am sort of cheering any interesting share you care to present. As to your track world. A nicely painted and refit dozer...as well and the excavator in progress....so with trac motion to move about (and operate to satisfying results). Clearly, you are executing as a journeyman fitter, to a long progression of poor care to powerful machines. As a context, I hope you know I share your kind flying of our US flag. As the pressure washing might continue, consider good photographs to the wiring. Also, there are several products as in line, terminal mating as row where any given color code can ease where terminal points join to larger wiring loom. A bolt on terminus that breaks long runs to ease service. I suggest your efforts well found as to end the loss of hydralic fluid as shown to the neglect, and poor past service which gathers dirt, dust and lodgement to critical components. Clean and without leaks, trouble can be found much more easily and addressed. Fire hazard avoided. Transfer as loss of footing and the cost basis of oil all signal a keen set of targets, as with the dozer, addressed one by one to finish. As for hose, and fittings. There are common sizes to some, but to keep hose, the machine to swedge ends, and the various size...I think a best contact developed as supply would be prudent. I simply haver been enjoying the bits you share as I may in fact not have the energy to man handle pumps of this type. I think back to the operator cabin as the start of this project. Next to the worksmanship finish I notice to for instance, the dozer operator station and simply predict a natural outcome ahead. The owner, and fitter to such machines commands respect and so much of that process is also, a key bit as safety. The one handed zip tie was a hoot. Also, those interior seals. I liked the geese shown lately...also. other pets. McGary

If you can properly inspect the wires... I had a OBD1 Chevy celebrity that wouldn't run right. It was my first computer car. The wiring harness was oil caked just like your hose bay. I peeled back the entire harness, removed all plastic chafe material, I found a short to ground and ended up cleaning every inch of wire finding two more issues, one being a corroded factory ground crimp and another chafe (short to ground). I would not have found those problems with a visual inspection, I ran all of it through my fingers and felt the decrease in thickness. My story has a happy ending, that car ran another 50K miles only opening the hood for oil changes. If your harness is unmolested by pests, chafe shielding intact and clamped away from chafes you should be able trust it. Maybe inspect what is accessible and get a sense of the original harness build quality before you make a decision.

Hi, love your channel. You are very methodical in your approach to machinery, my Grandad always said cleanliness is next to Godliness so it’s great to see you hose down and use a clean area for assembly. How long is a piece of string, only you know your time frame, budget etc but the amount of these rebuilds that I have watched and they don’t replace hoses leads to failures once operating. If you can afford it, the ability to manufacture your own hoses is a tremendous advantage so if you purchase the machinery to do it then it’s money in the bank for you. Again with the motor, how annoyed would you be if you didn’t do some investigation only to have it let you down on a job, away from your workshop, all guards nicely fitted etc. a stitch in time saves nine they say plus peace of mind. I know what you will do, I think you do also. This is another awesome effort on your part, you are one of the best KZbinrs going in my opinion. Helpful hint for marking hoses is to use telephone wire sometimes called telecommunication cable. Usually has a bazillion color combinations and they stay on and don't break or get in the way. Plus you can leave them on permanently for the poor soul that has to replace the hose in the future

Super IDEA ... never thought of this before ... you can pickup a 2 or 3 foot second of phone cable for peanuts at the scrap yard!!

Not "technically" a Brazilian colors only 25 and they are in pairs, so actually 50 colors total. The pair colors are blue, orange, green, brown, slate, and the tracer colors are white, red, black, yellow, violet. For cables with more than 25 pairs, each 25 pair group is bundled with a colored binder following the same color code, eg, the blue/white binder group is the first, containing cable pairs 1 thru 25. Buuuut, with this said, it's a brilliant idea and so easy/cheap. Thank you for sharing.

I was going to say use a air hammer with a flat end bit directly on the hydraulic nuts. but some one has already mentioned it. Believe me it does work. I use to be a heavy plant mechanic when I left school in 1975, and it was one of the first tricks of the trade I got shown.

Plus one. But use a flat chisel point to vibrate the nut on the swivel joint. It can bite in and start turning the nut.

I wonder if a hair clipper/buzzer/shaver or any buzzing construction tool might have the same effect, or if the low frequency of the air hammer is just correct for that size range of connections and fittings. (the magic frequency seems to be around 5 to 30 hertz/impacts per second with about 1 to 5 lbs (0.45 to 2.3kg) of rotational force input.)

@@SuperSecretSquirell We might need to suggest to Project Farm to try several different impact tools on hydraulic fittings. (Or maybe TylerTube. Unless Matt wants to go get sponsored by some "hair" trimmer company and test various things on hydraulic fittings.) Did you intend Wahl's hair and beard?

One trick is to use a rubber glove and a zip tie to cover the ends of the hoses to prevent contamination. I used to have a brass O ring pick to prevent scratches.

If you want to save some of your struggles with hydraulics use an air hammer or similar to rattle the nuts before you try to. Loosen them. Try it you'll be surprised how much of a difference it makes

I've been working in 95 degree heat with high humidity, and I feel for you! Sometimes I just stand there and sweat! You do amazing work, dude - and that's hard when it's so hot. or cramped, or dusty, or greasy! On the hoses, I'm interested to see your decision process. I wasn't rebuilding the little backhoe that goes on my tractor - I was using it - and hose after hose ruptured. The hoses on that little machine run inside the boom, so I had to take it off to route them - and there's a cylinder in there, too. After I removed the boom to route the hoses and got the machine back together, the seal on that cylinder failed - and I had to take the boom off again!!!! After about 2 hoses failed, I replaced all of them except the ones for the outriggers. After the first seal failed, every other one did in a short time, except for the cylinder that swings the boom. It was uncanny - as though I had used the wrong hydraulic oil or something - but I hadn't. I guess it's age? The hoses were small diameter and around 6 feet long. I think they averaged $70 each - some came from Kubota and some from the local hose maker. Not a lot of difference in the price, if I remember correctly. Keep up the good work!

You have tackled a big job here but I can see you are not afraid of anything. As a lover of good tools the OCD in me cringes when I see a Cresent wrench turned so the force is on the adjustable jaw instead of the fixed jaw. None of my business but sometimes I can’t help myself. Enjoy what you do and your positive attitude. Keep up the good work!

Hi Matt, I have the same machine but it might be in a bit better condition. If I were to take on your project I would ensure that the hydraulics were leak free and spotlessly clean inside all systems first. The engine should come out if you have the time and energy because you are going to hate yourself if you fire it up and then have to pull it for some reason. Electrical is very important but Hitachi does make a kit to change some of the valves to manual mode. After that it is on to pins, bushings and track issues. Paint, windows and upholstery can always be done after the machine is digging and moving. I am enjoying the series and wish you luck.

You might have to buy or rent? a commercial pressure hose making kit. I don't know how much that will cost, but paying for all these hoses seems prohibitive. Btw, where did all this detailed, meticulous skillset come from? A Tiger Dad? :) I am guessing you are some kind of engineer in real life?

I don't know if you need to pull the engine, but it'll make for great content all the same. Definitely research making your own hoses. I think you could probably find a kit that would do a great job and save a lot of money. With the tractor, dozer, and excavator, you will probably be needing hoses in the future. What to do next? There's so much to choose from, but this is nothing like the D4. I would look at your list of everything, and prioritize as you go. But write it down and keep it in front of you.
