I cannot believe that the Model A was sitting for two years! I remember the wreck and then the Ferrari took over the channel for a while. Congrats on getting the Model A rolling again.

When you take the wheels off next, clean all,the copper slip off thoroughly, it reacts will alloy and can cause galling…. Use a ceramic, aluminum or nickel antisieze 👍 Copper slip is only for steel on steel. 👍

I was going to say the same. Working on boats it is twice as fast with salt and electrolysis and can eat lower grade metals like whoa all day. May I recommend ceramic, it reacts with nothing and gives no F's about heat.

You used to be able to get thin pressed board at the hardware store. Those flat door cards can be replaced with that. Just trace the cutouts onto the new board. A sheet of plastic glued to the door serves as a vapor barrier and the new door panel will last years.

Tapping in your lathe can be easy. Keep the part in the chuck of the lathe and then insert your tap into the drill chuck. Put your lathe in the highest gear (where its easiest to spin manually) then spin the chuck by hand while applying a little force to the back of the drill chuck. Once you get the tap started you'll be able to spin the lathe chuck by hand and it will 'suck' the tap into your part. Perfectly straight taps every time. Obviously, don't turn the lathe on at any point while doing this. That would be a very fast way to ruin your tap, part, and day.

Mike, the 2 best ways to tap in a lathe are put the tap in tailstock chuck and don't do the clamp up so it can move freely, have the saddle far enough away so the tailstock won't hit it and run the spindle at like 40 rpm then push the tailstock forward till it starts cutting and pulls itself in, just be ready to stop the spindle when you're at depth. The other way is get a spring centre and use taps with a centre in the shank and put the spindle in lowest gear and use a wrench to turn the tap, just keep winding the tailstock in to keep pressure from the spring on the end of the tap.

I've tried this in the past and it didn't go well, I need more lathe lessons to be honest. I try to stick to only what I know given how dangerous the machine can be with incompetence or complacency.

@@stanceworks lots of cutting oil, doing it dry is going to make a mess and it works much better with spiral taps or gun taps which don't need to break swarf, hand taps should be backed off after a turn or two. And if your lathe doesn't have a foot operated spindle brake the first mentioned method isn't the best idea to try. Practice on some scrap

Header repairs are always fun, you killed it though. The flange replacement came out great & was definitely the best solution. Might've gotten some stress cracks on the other primaries in the future once it went through a few heat cycles.

I would say not to overly sweat the E85 deal. I leave it sitting in everything for long periods of time, and so far I've never had a problem from it at all. This beast you're (re)building is looking fantastic!!

Man I remember seeing this beauty at SEMA back in 2018 and losing my mind over it! I took so many pictures of it and spent hours going back and looking at it! If I have to tap something that I’ve been turning in the lathe I disengage the motor, engage the tap with the part and use a live center to make sure I get it started straight, turning the tap by hand(tool).

So nice to see the "A" on the ground and getting closer to being on the street. Wouldn't it have been easier/better to just take a 1/4" thick piece of metal and mill out the slash cuts in the end caps? No chance of corrosion under the decorative side of the metal. I'm pretty sure it wont see rain but it is going to be washed at some point. Rust will happen under there unless it's dipped in paint to get under there.

Fixturing that header would be a pain for milling. I have got warp out by using some shims at the ends and using heat and claps to reverse bend them. Should get that 1/8th down to a 1/16th or less after cooling.

Have found that using Send-Cut-Send, ends up cheaper, for price of material, no waste, reduced consumables, saved labor / time, and quality of their products. Hoping they expand their list of available materials, to include .016”, .020, and .024, 304, and 2024-T4, in various thicknesses, for aviation applications.
