No such thing as a freak accident in racing, there is always a root cause, best strategy is to find it and make a change so the same failure doesn’t occur again
@mfree802866 ай бұрын
No, I don't buy the hydrolock explanation for the K24's RUD. There would be far too much evidence that wasn't present. As that bearing started to drag it imparted a pulsed bending force across the length of the rod and it looks to have failed at a stress riser (the lettering) via fatigue cracking. Pulsed bending force? As the dragging bearing rotates it wants to bend the rod in the same direction of rotation, and since that movement is resisted by the wrist pin you flex the middle of the rod rotationwise, but as the engine is still operating under (big) power, under compression you're complexing that with the bending moment but when the rod goes into tension you're resisting it, so it bends more/less/more/less/more/less/more/less, alternating loads 1000 times per second. In fact if everything else wasn't so loud you probably could have heard it "hum" outside the block before it cracked and broke. Like a thick feeler gauge, if it's straight you can push it under something with a good deal of force, but the slightest bend and it wants to flex. Load it straight compression at 1000hz and it'll last longer than your patience. Flex it with that same load at 1000hz and it'll break across the middle pretty quickly. Now, on your neighboring rods I could buy that the first piston striking the head could have lifted the head enough to leak some water into that cylinder and get a slight bend out of it, but there's still a dearth of indicators as such. My memory may be faulty but I don't recall any smoke or steam from your exhaust when the engine came apart...
@repingers97776 ай бұрын
Remember guys a k24 has a 99mm stroke thats longer than a vipers v10 engine and a 5.7 ls1 v8 😂 so a k24 at 8000+ rpm has a higher piston speed than a nascar and the same as an f1 engine at 17,000rpm LOL

Plumbing protip: any time you can use a 45° instead of a 90°, do it. 90s literally cut the flow in half compared to a 45. There's a dead spot that forms in the bend, and basically only allows half the flow.
@RogueViirus126 ай бұрын
That depends on the sweep of the 90. Regular 90s are definitely worse than a regular 45 (a little over double the flow friction like you said, 2.15x) but long sweeps are only about 29% worse. Space constraints are obviously a factor regardless but in applications where you need a full 90 degree turn (like not having enough space to have the line make the other 45 bend further out with a gradual natural sweep) it's better to use one long sweep 90 than two 45s. Also gives you two less connection points so two less points of failure. Basically like you said, use a 45 if you can get away with it. But if you need a 90 and can fit a long sweep one go with that because you'll only be marginally worse off
@UncleSpool6 ай бұрын
@@RogueViirus12 very succinct, thanks for the reply! I just wanted to mention it, since it looks like he could easily get some 45s under the intake manifold. Speaking of sweeping 90s, he could also route the hose if possible to sweep into the right spot, too bad they don't make braided hoses with a preformed bend. Business idea? Lol.

BSP thread is actually pretty common in the equipment industry. Kubota especially is fond of it and while it's difficult to find fittings for sometimes, the use of a sealing cup/bell design inside, instead of just the threads sealing (like taper pipe thread) means it makes a sturdy, solid connection.

Hey Mike, take a look at Dailey Engineering. They build dry sump systems that excel at de-foaming the oil. Their pump bolts directly to the billet pan that scrapes the oil off of the crank. The pump has one section built like a roots blower to scavenge the foam from the engine and send it through a special oil separator. Some of the mystery rod grenades might be from too much foam in the oil. They have pans for K20s. Someone down thread also mentioned detonation as a possible cause. Do you have knock sensors?

I haven't seen small engines less than 3000cc tuned to produce more than ~600 HP that can withstand track conditions, but it will be very interesting to see if that is possible. with 600hp and less tha 1200kg Gt cup cars are crazy fast, but without very advanced aero and brakes you need more power My guess would be the oil pressure wasn't enough for that much torque and rpm since you already said the psi was lower, and rod bonded to the crank. Hydro lock would explain rod break but wouln't explain the bearing getting that hot imo.
