Rec'n'Share Version 3 - with Audio Track Separation

A quick look at the new features and changes in Yamaha's Rec'n'Share V3 app, the most important being the Audio Track Separation function.
Using this, you can now split the track into drums, vocals, bass and everything else, and either remove or turn up/down any individual part. Perfect for doing your own drumless versions of tracks.

Many thanks Simon! New to the EDA10 and Rec n Share, I am now finally able to get to my track files from a local place of from my current cloud storage without needing (to use) iTune and/or DropBox! Thanks! That + feature to go to your files is available in the iPhone version of the App and NOT in the Andriod one I see, right?

Thanks to all your helpful videos I confidently got myself a DTX6K3-X kit which I'm loving. Looking to start using this app with it now and was just wondering if there's any information on what file formats the app supports for importing songs?

Hi. Yes, they need to be WAV, MP3 or AAC. However, not all formats are equal, and some MP3's won't load as they are too low quality. I generally convert everything to WAV (I do it on my computer). You can try online converters to change MP3 to WAV (for example) but I've found a lot don't convert to what they say they are converting to. So that should probably read "WAV, high quality MP3 or high quality AAC". Its a bit hit or miss but thats not the app, its the fact that most online formats are not what they say.

At the moment, only the iOS version of Rec'n'share V3 has been released. The Android version will be released very soon, although I do not have a date yet.

How about recording video, is there a zoom feature on the camera, it has to be so far away to fit everything in the screen.

Hi Simon - thanks for all your content! Question - can you create a 'throw off' snare sound on the DTXPro module? (DTX6 kit) That sound when you dis-engage the snare wires from under the snare reso head. Is that possible? Ive searched this online and in the DTX manual and haven't been able to find out.

Hi Do you mean a 'snares off' sound? Or the sound of the snare release being used? I'm guessing the first one. Theres no snares off sound in the DTXpro but it is fairly easy to make one. In the past I've layered the 12" Jazz Tom with the 12" Vintage tom and it comes out pretty good. I changed the Vintage Tom pitch so it matched the 12" Jazz Tom and I'd be fine using that.

I just saw your video on ABCD layering - will try some combo's, see what I can come up with. This is exactly the sort of function just begging to be made accessible and intuitive with an official controller app.

Hi Simon. The Rec & Share app looks great, but is there also an app that allows you to edit the DTX6 module? With the 500 series kits there was an app that let you change settings, sounds, etc with a large graphical interface, overcoming the limited LCD screen on the module. Is there a similar app planned for the DTX6 line up? Thanks!

It was the 502 series, not the 500 series that had the Touch app, but yes, one is coming. I cant say when, but hopefully not too long.

@@ThePowerchimp Hopefully yes. Lightning can move lots of different types of data, including MIDI so it will connect to the module in the same way as Rec'n'share does to the EAD - Lightning to USB.

Looks cool! This would be amazing if you could remove click from an existing track. I'd love to create alternate versions I have from old drum book playalongs that all have click embedded in the file.

Hi Bob. The app cant do that, but you probably could if you have a DAW available. Does the track start with just the click? If so, chop out a click, invert it (so it is the reverse signal), and create a new click track using the inverted click which exactly matches the original. Then if you add the two tracks together, the inverted click should cancel out the click on the original track. You will need to mess about with it but it is possible as long as the original click sound is consistent. If you try it, let me know how you get on.

Hi Simon. So having used up my few track separations Rec & Share asks me to connect to my device (in my case a DTX Pro module from a DTX6 kit) but connecting my iPhone through the AUX input (which I use to play drumless youtube tracks) doesnt work, nor does connecting from my phones lightning port to the USB-A port on the rear of the module - the screen says "Incompatible USB device" when I plug it in. So how do I unlock more track separation if the module wont detect my iphone through either Aux-In or rear USB port? Thanks!

Hi. You need to connect it digitally using the Apple Camera Connection Kit or USB3 Adaptor and a standard USB cable. Connecting it through the Aux In won't work as its an analogue connection and the security needs a digital connection, and then the other way you tried was using the standard Apple charging cable into the To Device port. You need a standard USB cable from the To Host port with the Apple adaptor on the other end with the Lighting connector on it which connects to the phone. Its the same adaptor you use when you would use the Rec'n'share app. I hope that makes sense.

@@edruminfo Thanks again Simon, I finally got it working. For me, the instrument (eg drum module) needed to be POWERED OFF and the App closed on the iDevice FIRST. Then I connected a Lightning-to-USB-B cable to the TO HOST port. Only after the cable was plugged in, Powered ON the module and launch the App and they ought to connect.

No. You get 3 uses if it it not connected to a device. When you connect to a device you get another 10 which you can use without it being connected, or unlimited when it is connected (you can renew another 10 indefinitely)

@@simonebiles7189 Thats why then. You need an Apple Lightning to USB adaptor and a standard USB (printer cable). The phone must connect to the To Host port on the back of the module. Dont buy a cheap LIghning to USB adaptor as they only work for a short time. It will need to be the Apple one. Where are you on the planet? It is possible that your local Amazon may have a different option which works.

You can't connect via Bluetooth. It has to be wired so it can handle the video streaming.

If the app is not connected to a device (DTXpro, DTXproX, EAD10 or DTX402 modules) you can only use the Audio Separation (for the first time) 3 times before you have to connect it, and get 10 more 'uses'. When you 'run out' you simply connect to a module and get topped up with 10 more uses.

Thank you. If you want to record just audio, put the track on a USB drive and plug it in the back of the module, press Play and then immediately Record and the unit will record your drums over the track and record it as a new track the USB drive - no need for an iPad or anything else. Very simple.

@@edruminfo Thanks for your quick reply. I know that I can record directly into the EAD-10 and save the recording to a USB-stick. What I would like to be able to to do is use the app - due to the nice feature of automatically adding click to a song - to record audio only and be able to choose file format. Maybe it's a feature request. :) Talking about feature requests, it would also be great if you could record a track with no scene or effects and be able to add that afterwards using the EAD-10 or Rec 'n Share.

@@f0inzap Ok, in which case, just make the video as normal (choose a song, add the click, record yourself playing it), save it to the phone. Now (depending on your phone) you can convert that video file to an audio only file (of any sort) using an app like (supposedly - I haven't tried it) Audio Converter, MP3 Converter or Documents by Readdle. Its not in the Rec'n'share app, but to be honest, you are the first person to mention it in 100k+ downloads. I'm sure there are others, but its not a high demand feature I'm afraid. Give it a try.

@@edruminfo Thanks again for a rapid reply. :) I did just exactly what you suggested earlier. Downloaded the .mov file and converted it to an .m4a format, which works pretty well. However, it will not be "the best sound quality audio file" My intention is to use the recording for an album to be released, that's why I asked about .wav file. Now I know it's not possible to do that as we speak... But maybe in a not so distant future... :) All the best, and thanks for replying. --Stephen

@@f0inzap Your best solution is open the track on Rec'n'share. Add the click track. Connect the audio output of the phone to the Aux In of the module. Plug in a USB drive to the module. Put the USB into record, play the track/video (with the added click) on the phone, play along with it. That will put JUST the drum track onto USB in WAV format (as Aux In doesn't get recorded to USB) without needing to convert anything.

Hi Simon, quick question for you. I notice that when I record drums they are recorded out of sync with the track I am playing with. Also the metronome is on the up beat. Is rec-and-share shifting my drum track to align with where it thinks the down beat is?

To correct the click, go to the main screen and touch the button top right (below Help) - two 1/8th notes with an accent over one note. This will put the click back on the beat. To correct the sync issue, go to your video, touch the Edit button (the pencil)and then move the Timing Adjustment slider at the bottom of the screen. The sync issue is caused by how long it takes your phone to process the data recorded. Different phones have different processors so the delay is different.

I took the two 1/4" plugs from the microphone and plugged them into outputs on a mixing board. When I hit Record I am seeing active signal from my guitar but nothing is recording. The levels look good on the led display on rec'n'share but I can't hear any sound and nothing gets recorded. Any thoughts? Thanks much.

@@rufisdodd4318 Firstly, you're using the EAD for the wrong purpose, but hey if you want to do that, then go for it. Just bear in mind that the EAD puts out special phantom power for the Sensor and your mixer won't appreciate having a voltage put into its outputs which could damage it. Secondly, one of the leads going to the Sensor is a trigger signal and one is a stereo microphone signal. You are using both (so a total of three signals). The signal you are seeing is probably trigger signal (voltage) coming into the trigger cable from the mixer, not audio signal. You only need to use cable B as that is the stereo microphone input, but please don't blame me if you blow the output stage of your mixer. There are MUCH easier ways to record a guitar that don't risk damaging your gear.

@@interestingvids-hx2sq its not to do with the app - its the keyboard. The keyboard needs to have 'audio over usb' to work with the app. If it doesn't have that, it won't work, and it appears the E473 doesn't have audio over usb.

Thank you Yamaha for this lovely update! I wish Yamaha comes up with new version update foe Ead10 too. Features updates like voice layering , triggering different voice with the dynamics playing , features moreover like Dtx 10 has … because Ead10 is a very useful gadget for hybrid drummers. Recently I came across the review video of the new Roland Spd sx Pro and the features are wonderful . Please Yamaha at-least few new features…😊😊😊

They are very different products - the DTXM12, DTX10 and SPDSXpro - aimed at different parts of the market, but I know what you mean. Let's see what happens.

Imagine if track separation got to the point it could analyse different components of the drum kit coming out of the USB from the EAD10. A bit of spill would be expected but imagine being able to get a BD, SD, Toms and cymbals split into 4 tracks instead of the stereo mix straight into a DAW.

It won't do that in real time - too much processing. Plus you would have to teach the processor what the sounds were, so it could split them accurately. Much simpler just to add triggers to everything and use the midi generated by the EAD to trigger external multi-layer samples.

@@edruminfo oh well! I’ve got a great acoustic-to-electric conversion which I record with, but I’ve been dreaming of recording at home with real drums with the EAD10 as part/all of the sound source. I’m lucky to have what I’ve got on the e-side, but there’s always that acoustic drums “what if?” nagging at me.

No, its not, as the DTX900 does not have USB audio, and it needs to have USB Audio to work. The DTX900 is too old.
