And the reason you would do that is because a lot of RPG's have a pressure button on the front that explodes the RPG when they come into contact with a surface, a lot of times insurgents and Iraq/afghan forces will walk around without the protective plastic pieces off which is crazy unsafe. Badass scene and shooting. It'd be a whole lot of cranking elevation on that scope too. Around 10 full mils (34 minutes) of drop, assuming M118LR and a 350m zero. The shot while the RPG man was crouched and running was even more impressive. Helps when there isn't any mirage, and when it looks like a nearly 30X scope through the camera... But since the bad guys are in partial defilade, why not use the Mk-19 on the vehicle roof? 975 meters is well within that weapon's range, and they can't duck down and hide from it. Like they could have from direct small arms fire. It helps when the enemy is dumb, I guess. Love this series.

They're in an invasion with the rest of their battalion taking fire not far away. They're not going to fuck around when they already have permission to shoot and they can see the dude has an RPG. If he dicks around too long, the dude would have fired his RPG. It's not like they're fighting an insurgency at this point (even though these guys were clearly irregulars)

There's a lot in this scene I like, especially about Pappy's and Reyes's reactions after they get their kills. I think it really conveys the indifference the guys feel about killing and how that is messing up their psyche. Also, Reyes buddhist chanting to avoid bad karma before killing someone adds a nice toich of humanity to it.

Ruddy Reyes chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo while taking down 2 targets at a 1000 meters... Yeah, it doesn't get more meta than that.
@SpitefulCartographer3 жыл бұрын
What is that? Some kind of prayer?
@ashutoshsharmash3 жыл бұрын
@@SpitefulCartographer It's a Buddhist mantra based on the philosophy of letting your desires be your source of enlightenment and wisdom. So the reason why it's so Meta and why I love Generation Kill is 1. Any religion tells us that there are clear cut rules of morality- KILLING IS AN OUTRIGHT SIN. In Buddhism it isn't. In war, its a them versus us situation. If Rudy and Pappy fail to take them out, that RPG team would kill their squad, and that burden of karma would rest on Ruddy and Pappy's shoulders for the rest of their lives. That's why Ruddy chants the mantra. He knows it is bad to kill, and he has to live with it, but he knows that he's choosing between the lesser of two evils, so he chants to achieve the goal of killing those two enemy soldiers, as quickly and effectively as possible. And that's exactly what happens, two shots at a 1000 meters out, one of them moving. 2. When Ruddy comes back to his Humvee, he's asked if he felt awesome to kill those "hajgis". To which he replies, "I don't know dog. It kinda felt good I guess." Again, in Buddhism, the path to achieving your goal is more important than the goal. That's why Ruddy wasn't humble or boastful about his kill. He was just indifferent. They saw, they shot, they killed. End of story.

They were probably focused on the humvee gunners, and the gunners were not engaging them so maybe they thought they hadn't been spotted. They don't see the sniper team set up and were too busy trying to get a shot off on the humvees. You can see the gunner putting the booster on the rocket so they were busy trying to get a round off. Later in one of the episodes one of the Marines mentions their combat discipline, one of the insurgents died while trying to get a round off. Maybe they knew they had probably been spotted but still wanted to try and get a shot off anyway, just thought they had a little more time to do so.
