Astronomers have found the most massive stellar black hole in our galaxy, thanks to the wobbling motion it induces on a companion star. This wobbling was measured over several years with the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission. Additional data from other telescopes, including ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile, confirmed that the mass of this black hole, dubbed Gaia BH3, is 33 times that of our Sun. The chemical composition of the companion star suggests that the black hole was formed after the collapse of a massive star with very few heavy elements, or metals, as predicted by theory. This video summarises the discovery.

What mass is the orbiting star?
@ESOobservatory
@ESOobservatory Ай бұрын
About 76% the mass of our Sun. But it's more evolved than the Sun, it's running out of fuel and puffing up.

So we have two black holes on our neighborhood?

@@metamode_ So is the "Earth years" distance a distance which took 1 year using Earth's orbital velocity around the sun?

@@metamode_ no, i meant literally what I asked. I thought that by an earth year you meant ~365 days. If so, then yes, you can't measure distance using a time unit. So, again, what did you mean?
