What to do with your lawn during long droughts. Doc explains that the last rainfall was 34 days ago and if it doesn't rain soon, we could break the records that go back the 1800's. The question is, should you keep fighting the drought and water in the fall. The short answer is... it's up to you but since your lawn is going dormant soon it might not be worth the effort or expense of high water bills.

Every area they call crusher run something different. But it’s 3/4 rock down to dust. Which is why it packs like concrete after rolling once it gets a good rain on it

I cut off my irrigation to the bermuda as well, cold nights put it to sleep no matter what the daytime temperature gets to. Watering it isn't going to turn back the tiger striping.

Hey Doc, I have a similar doe with a large abscess on her right jaw. I first saw her on trail cameras in late 2021. I thought it may be a tumor and she would not survive long. Saw her again this time last year (Oct 2023) while taking my son on his first hunt. I told him to let her walk since she is clearly a survivor. She is on my cameras again this year and seemingly doing just fine.

Yes, we had a three legged doe for years. She gave birth twice.

Also with the deer with an abscess I would say if they are still eating, give em a chance but at the same time when they stop you probably won't see much of them again.

Houston had 31-days without measurable rain, today that broke with .25-inch. Still took chance and laid down 10-10-10 and Duocide yesterday. Hopefully the sprinkler ran and today’s rain should start it soaking in!

Yeah .... I live in Colorado and it has been dry for a while, today was actually the first rain in a while though. New seeding project pretty much failed but I have a plan for spring.

I got sick after the hurricane passed. Out about 3 weeks so I couldn’t water the lawn. It went dormant. Since colder weather is around the corner I’m letting it be. Yard looks on par with the rest of the neighborhood so it’s okay in my opinion.

Re the Deer, the "abscess" is actually where they get a cut inside their jaw and that allows food to pack in the pocket that is formed. It isn't life threatening but just somewhat uncomfortable. If the deer were harvested, you could examine that area and find bits and pieces of everything it had eaten over a time. Thanks Doc for all the info you provide. I am a well informed follower.

i already did my first round of overseeding in late september. but i'm getting ready to do another one with NuSprint rye once we get a good chance of natural rain. my yard is way too big to have a $400 water bill. But it's supposed to be fairly warm this winter. I should be able to overseed even into the winter if the soil temps aren't too cold.

I'm near Fort Worth, TX and I can't remember the last time it rained. Call a wildlife rehabber about the baby with the abcess - they might come treat it

Doc, did Anderson's have a bad batch of Duocide? Put two bags down and I have grubs. Lots of them and lots of dead grass patches. Ordered 2 more bags since we will still have warm weather the next few weeks here in North GA. You know what loves grubs though? Armadillos! I've off'd 6 so far. My poor zoysia....

Call a large animal vet to come out and tranq the deer to remove the abscess.
