~~Win a Fender Mustang Micro!~~
bit.ly/2022FMM
It's no secret that the Fender Mustang Micro Headphone Amp is one of my favorite pieces of gear, but now I love it even more! I finally updated the firmware and it fixed the issue where recordings would be too quiet or headphone volume would be too loud.
I also show how to record with the Fender Mustang Micro on an iPhone and go over troubleshooting tips like the "This Device Requires too Much Power" issue.
Thanks for watching, and please like and subscribe!

@DadTimeJamTime Ok update: Success!!!! I gave it another go. Plugged in everything in the exact order as you advise in the vid. With everything plugged in (I turned off and turned on the Micro again), the GarageBand app had a message pop up that asked if I wanted to turn on monitoring. This is the key - saying yes to this somehow enables the internal microphone to get the sound from the Mustang Micro instead of the external phone microphone. I was able to lay down the riff track for over 7 minutes, then played it back listening to it in my headphones!!! Totally stoked!!! You. Are. THE. MAN!!! Rock on!!!! 🤘🎸

This thing is pretty cool. If you use the preamp setting, you can use it with a keyboard! I use my acoustic guitar, and my bass as well as my normal guitars. I’ve also used it at the end of my pedal board so I could practice with how I normally have my gear set up. Such a freaking cool device.

I also just subscribed to your channel to help you get to your goal of 1k. Very nice playing BTW and thank you! The MM is great, I also use it for playing my bass and 12 string acoustic/electric along with my Strat and LTD 6 string electric guitars - the Micro provides tons of inspiration! @@dadtimejamtime Yes yes of course - it's the least I can do for such great information! The MM is amazing! I'm thinking about getting the Mustang IV 2/12 amp. If the amp has anything close to the sounds of the Micro, I'm in. The amps are super cheap - could be good or bad...I'm all about tone that inspires - and I think most guitarist/bassists/keyboardists will find the Micro very inspiring! And practicing daily makes such a difference! I'm committing myself to practice at least once a day - twice would be ideal. I can only play so much 12 string before my fingertips say "enough" - especially when learning new chords like partial bar chords where my pinkly has to be pressing down on a larger string than normal...Sitting down now as we speak to record my first metal riff on my LTD guitar with EMG 81's through the Micro into my iPhone...I'll update to let you know how it goes. 👊

@DadTimeJamTime Ok so I’ve spent literally hours trying to get this to fly - to the point I now have a headache and running to you for help lmao….I guess I’m not GarageBand savvy enough…with everything hooked up, GarageBand want to record with the phone microphone and not with the Micro. I’ve checked all the settings - at least the ones I can find - but can’t figure out how to change the microphone. When I play back my recordings it plays it picking up the dry external sound of the guitar, not the plugged in sound. Maybe do a step-by-step video tutorial for we of the GarageBand-challenged…?

Looking forward to your video on looping, that’s something I’ve been trying to figure out. Another problem I’m having is recording and hearing the drum track but not having them part of the recording. Can you basically only record without any backing sound?
@dadtimejamtime
@dadtimejamtime 2 жыл бұрын
You know, that’s a good question regarding not recording the backing track - I don’t think there’s a way to select whether the backtrack gets included in the recording - I think it’s just always sent. I wonder if you can select tracks in something like garage band and get just the guitar signal. I don’t think I’ve seen that but I’ll play around with it and share anything I find. A different option with a small mixer could be to plug your MM into your guitar and send the headphone out to a mixer on tracks 1 & 2 and then send your back track out of a device to the mixer on tracks 3 & 4 and then blend the sound in your ears via the mixer, but then you could send the usb audio out of the MM to your phone or computer and only get your guitar. It’s a little complicated but should work if you need it for a recording interface

Great question! So I’m actually recording with a separate camera than my phone - so all the vocal audio is through the camera. Then I just cut it together after the fact. I wish there was a way to catch some vocal audio right into the Mustang micro - but you’d need an external mixer or something and a micro phone to make that work. Like: vocals into miicrophone into mixer, Mustang Micro into mixer via the headphone port. Mixer into the phone via the usb to lightning camera adapter. Headphones into mixer to hear the mix. A little over kill, but then you could use your phone to capture it all and share it right from there.

Sure! I use whatever I have nearby usually 🤦‍♂️ It’s usually either apple ear buds (which don’t sound great but they work). I also use a $20 pair of skull candy over the ear headphones from Target and they are far more full fidelity than the ear buds. And finally I have a pair of Marantz studio monitor headphones that were on sale at musicians friend for a deal of the day for like $30. And those have a little more clear mid sounds than the skull candy, but it’s hardly noticeable. I have a pair of Grado SR-80s that sound pretty good too. I don’t think you need to worry too much - it’s an enjoyable experience with any of the above I’ve listed. Anything that’s multi-driver tends to sound better if you can find it. But since it requires wires headphones, you can get some good stuff pretty affordably now! Hope that helps!

Good question - my assumption (you know that they say about those…) is that as long as if you were to plug it into a computer and it would register as an input device (in garage band or daw) then it should work with this set up as well. I’ve successfully hooked my QuadCortex and HX Stomp up this way. So it ultimately depends on the manufacturer and how they make it, but I imagine most amps that have USB out should work. Good luck!

To connect the Mustang Micro to your guitar all you do is plug the 1/4” jack side of the Mustang micro right into the output jack of your guitar - the same way you’d plug an instrument cable into your guitar. Is it possible to monitor playback back from the iPhone using headphones, while recording a new overdub track on GarageBand? It looks like you’re using the headphone out of the micro mini and not multi tracking, which would mean no need to monitor playback from the iPhone. I’m wondering if there’s another adapter to help achieve my goal? Cheers!
@dadtimejamtime
@dadtimejamtime 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I haven’t found a way to reliably monitor from the iPhone due to no headphone jack. The other adapters that split the port like the lighting to headphone with a lightning port only lets power through the extra lightening port, not data, so the Mustang micro doesn’t work with that dongle. I haven’t found any other adapter, and Bluetooth headphones have too much latency. One thing I want to look into is if on a computer or android device the MM can be both input and output Channels, such that one could send their monitoring mix back out through the MM headphones, but I doubt that it will do it. Ultimately it’s meant to be a headphone practice amp, not a multitrack audio interface. But it would be so cool to have it work - super light setup. One thing you can do is stream your Bluetooth audio to the MM from an iPhone, so maybe that could work? But I haven’t tried that yet. All in all I’d say MM to iPhone is good for the social media use case or quick visual voice memos. But trying to use it as a studio set up is lacking. iPad Pro with a headphone port on the other hand works pretty darn well! Sorry for the bad news, and I’ll keep you posted if I find something! Thanks for watching!

@@dadtimejamtime According to this video MM is an input only interface. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZvJm6ikatGjZ9E You’d need either another interface or headphone out port like the iPad you mentioned to monitor back from a daw. But It does seem like there’s gotta be some kind of adapter to split the headphone port on the iPhone. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I followed your directions and was able to record my bass in GarageBand, but I now want to go back into GarageBand and lay a new track alongside the bass track, but I can’t here the first track through my monitoring headphones (it instead is being played through the phone’s speaker). Great question - unfortunately there isn’t an easy way to do that with the mustang micro and it’s a pain because it’s so close! But yeah unfortunately the best way to do this that I’ve figured out is either put some Bluetooth headphones in and play through the lag, then adjust the second track to line up better or send the track to another device and stream that as a backing track to the mustang micro via blue tooth and then record down to a new track. You can also check out my new video on the Flamma FX10 headphone amp - it actually allows for monitoring which is really a nice upgrade to the MM and it’s $40 cheaper. Anyway, hope this helps, and best of luck.

Correct, when you use an iPhone + the camera adapter + the MM and record a video via the camera app, there is only audio from the Mustang Micro. Doing it this way, the MM outputs a digital signal straight to the camera app audio. Audio quality is as good as it sounds in the headphones you're using.

Does the mustang micro need to be updated before using the camera adapter? I bought the adapter today but can’t get it to work
@dadtimejamtime
@dadtimejamtime Ай бұрын
It shouldn’t have to be updated before working. What kind of issue are you having? What you need: 1. Mustang Micro 2. Headphones with a typical 3.5mm headphone jack 3. USB-C to USB-A type adapter 4. Apple lightning to camera adapter 2.0 or 3.0 (I recommend going with the official apple brand adapter) 5. With the camera adapter 3.0, you need an extra wall charger & lightning cable to plug into the extra lightning port on the adapter Questions: 1. Is the MM fully charged? 2. Is it an official Apple adapter? Sometimes the off-brand adapters from Amazon don’t work. 3. Feel free to send me a picture in DMs on Instagram of the set up and I can help troubleshoot. Starting from the top, make sure the Mustang Micro and recording device (iPhone or iPad) are fully charged. My troubleshooting steps are as follows and work pretty much most of the time: 1. Turn off your device and the MM 2. Turn your device back on 3. Keep your MM off, plug the adapter and usb-lighting cable into the MM and the Phone 3.b. If you’re using a camera adapter that is USB-3 - so it has an extra lightning port in it, you have to plug that into the wall to provide external power. 4. Open up whatever app you want to use 5. Turn the Mustang Micro on 6. Make sure volume is turned up on your guitar 🤪 7. Make sure you can hear audio out of the MM headphones port 8. If you’re using garage band you should be notified about monitoring and to either chose to turn it on or off. You can also pick a mono or stereo channel to record with. 9. Try recording and then listen back - you should have sound. 10. If not, try making sure the MM and device are fully charged. 11. And if that doesn’t work, try swapping a different cable and different adapter. Hope one of these steps help! Good luck!🍀🤘

Interesting - so if you’re sure it’s charged, the MM is turned on (middle position for the switch) and plugged in via a usb-c to usb-A cable, the only other things I’d say are try a different adapter and different cable. Highly recommend the apple brand adapters - lots of the random ones on Amazon that are cheaper are just less consistent in quality and have issues. If a different wire and different adapter don’t do it, I’d recommend returning and trying a different mustang micro - you could probably take the whole setup to a guitar center or something and try a different one out right there in person to see if it works.

Hi please help me understand, as I am not tech savvy. When all hooked up, do you hear the sound as it comes out of the iPad through the headphones? Or as it comes out of the micro? In other words if I wanted to use this as a interface with a clean signal into something like amplitude, will I hear the amplitude modified tone in the headphones? So I can try out other amps (that aren’t on the micro itself) without having to have my pc speakers turned up?
@dadtimejamtime

Unfortunately if you plug your headphones into the mustang micro you only hear the mustang micro tones. If you plug your headphones into your PC or iPad (3.5mm audio jack required - can’t use lightning cable headphones and the camera adapter in conjunction) and then apply other amps then you can hear the plug-in tones. I’d recommend the studi direct in amp setting on the MM for this approach. It’s defiantly not as versatile as an actual audio interface for this reason.

I have one of these but honestly, I have about 10 of these different types of plug in amps, Vox, line 6, Black star, Zoom, Nux Mighty Plug Pro etc... including this Fender micro amp... and though this amp has some good features i.e. Rechargeable, sturdy and portable. I don't like the fact that you can't adjust any of these amps to suit your taste. Now, you can adjust or modify the perimeters of each of the amps you select but, you can't adjust the effects, tone or the gain. What is hardwired in is all there is. IMO, this item is way overpriced for what you get. However, price aside, to me it is absolutely crucial to have the ability to adjust any and all effects on whatever amp I am listening to. It is paramount to a good listening and playing experience for me. One of My favorite amps for the last 20 years (albeit not very sturdy and a huge battery sucker) is the Vox Amplug2 Classic Rock $49.99. Simple rock and clean tones and adjustable gain and tone control. My second Favorite (and lately my new go to amp) is the new Mighty Plug Pro by NUX $109.99. It also has a rechargeable feature (like the Fender) and is very sturdy but more importantly, it has the ability to adjust the perimeters of each and every effect and tone, and there are so many effects, amps and tones to choose from. Peace.

Yah, I imagine they’ll release a future version with Bluetooth to phone controls for full tweakability like the Mustang GT amps once they prove out the market. That being said, for what I play and how I practice this is more than enough to get an enjoyable experience. The second I get my spark going (or my pedal board) I feel like I can spend more time tweaking than playing in the few spare minutes I actually get between kids and work. The usb recording, rechargeable battery, and simple controls make this for me. But I definitely get the trade offs. Thanks for sharing and watching! 🤘

If you’re using a usb 3 to lightning camera adapter, make sure it’s also plugged into the wall. 3, make sure the MM is “on” - when you plug it in through the adapter a light turns on to indicate it’s charging even when it is turned off - make sure the switch is in the middle position 4. Try a new cable 5. try a different device to isolate the issue (like a computer that doesn’t rely on the adapter and is just usb-c to usb-c 6. I’ve seen non-apple adapters fail a lot - so if you’ve got an Amazon 3rd party try an apple adapter 7. If you’ve got an apple adapter, try a new one 8. Is there a trick to get the Mustang Micro to pair with Bluetooth? I just can't find it with any of my devices. Macbook, iPad, Android phones...none of them even see it.
@dadtimejamtime
@dadtimejamtime 2 жыл бұрын
Yah, to get it to pair you slide the power switch up past the “on” position in the middle and hold it until the light starts to flash (blue I think). Then go to your Bluetooth settings on your device and look for it. It’ll only be available as an Audio output device. Meaning you can only stream music to it from a device - you’ll be able to hear what you’re streaming via headphones plugged into the MM or via a usb-c cable plugged into a device to record with. You can’t connect Bluetooth headphones to it to listen to your playing and you can’t connect it as an audio input device to record via Bluetooth for instance.

@@dadtimejamtime OK. In a roundabout way that answered my question. Mine was defective. Basically the problem was that it was not discoverable for some reason, so I never saw it pop up as a device I could pair to with any of my other devices (iOS and Android devices). I drove out to exchange it and the new one works just as you say. Thanks!

Just purchased this unit. I have tried recording onto iPhone, Mac and iPad, with no luck. I have all the same gear , apple cables and camera adapter, yet, whenever I hook everything up none of the phone, iPad or Mac can see or hear the micro. They only recognize the internal microphone. I checked everything triple times. Very disappointing.

I have both camera adapters, powered and un powered, I tried a power bank and power from the wall, I checked the firmware on the micro and it’s the latest. Could it be a bad micro?

@@markthatcher6844 definitely could be a bad micro - I’ve heard of that happening once before a few years ago. Have you tried different USB-C cables too? These are my ordered troubleshooting steps. Might be worth going through it in order just to triple check and if this doesn’t solve it it’s probably a bad unit (also forgive the repeat questions you’ve already answered, this is boilerplate copy/paste): Questions: 1. 10. If not, try making sure the MM is actually on and not in off mode - it can be misleading because you can plug it in and the light turns on because it’s charging giving the false perception that it’s actually on. 11. And if that doesn’t work, try swapping a different cable and different adapter. Hope one of these steps help! Good luck!🍀🤘

@@dadtimejamtime Thank you for the quick reply. I'm sorry to report it didn't help. I do have the apple adapters (2.0 and 3.0), apple cables, everything fully charged , starting from cold steel, everything seems to work fine and perfectly until step 8. I get no notifications on the iphone or ipad. They only ever show the mic working. I do not get any option to to change the input. I cant switch or force the ios on either device to see/recognize/accept the camera adapter. It works beautifully as a stand alone headphone amp, but I cannot seem to get the hookup to the ios devices for recording. I did notice that both camera adapters pass power to the MM. In the MM off mode, the charging light is on whenever the 2.0 is directly plugged in, and when the 3.0 is plugged in and hooked up to a power bank. Bummer.

@@markthatcher6844 yeah, and you tried it on a Mac too you said right? The fact that it doesn’t immediately show up as an audio device there is a good sign it’s probably an issue with the unit. Sorry for the bad news and bad luck. Hope you can exchange it no problem.

Yah I’ve seen mixed results with Amazon adapters. The other thing to check is that if it’s a camera adapter 3.0 (if it has an extra lightning port) you need to plug power into it as well.

Ok. Everything is cool. But it’s a big BUT((( After firmware update the tails of delay on last FX preset (2290 delay) are awfully long, it’s ugly for my ears 👂. If you know how to back up - please, open a secret!!!!!
@dadtimejamtime
@dadtimejamtime Жыл бұрын
A bit delayed here, but you could try factory reseting it by turning Mustang Micro on while simultaneously holding the EQ “+” (D) and EFFECTS “-” (E) buttons for three seconds. The LEDs above the EQ and EFFECTS buttons will illuminate white after factory reset (as will the LEDs above the AMP and MODIFY buttons not shown below). Not sure if that will reset back to default of current firmware, or will actually reset back to the firmware the device came with from the factory. But worth a shot!

Wow, what phone are you using and which app are you trying? This is the first I’ve heard of someone just failing completely outright. Which dongle as well? Use this method to record weekly and there are a couple gotchas to watch out for, but generally it’s a pretty solid set up - especially when traveling. Hope you get it working or can get your money back. Good luck ✌️

@@nilemceuen7327 gah, I’m sorry to hear that it’s not resolving. The only other thing I can think of is to try a different iPhone/iPad to see if it works, or try a different MM to see if that works. If you’ve tried all the above, it’s gotta be a device issue. There’s a toggle under settings > Face ID and passcode to turn on allow usb devices even if locked - I’ve heard some stories that toggling that helped resolve a similar situation. Do you have any thing else around that you can plug in via usb + camera adapter to your phone? Like a midi controller or some other device to see if that works? Met help troubleshoot to see if it’s your MM or phone…
