The American car manufacturer Tesla has set the official record for electric vehicles at the Nürburgring. The "Model S Plaid" lapped the 20.8-kilometre Nordschleife in 7:35.579 minutes. The 1,020 hp vehicle with a tri-motor was driven by Swedish driver Andreas Simonsen. The time is now listed in the category for electric production cars. All official times set on the Nordschleife so far can be found on our website:

@@floki1664 I mean I'd like to say the same but right now Tesla is light years ahead on the electric engineering front. Making good motors and batteries is not the same as making a good ICE engine. :) On top of this Tesla has done some amazing work on its active dampening and traction control algorithms. Their cars are impressively stable considering their weight. Right now you can see this when you watch a Taycan launch and hear it squeal the tyres versus a Model S of similar weight launching with no squeal at all yet a faster launcher and the same tyres. I don't disagree that other companies will get closer, I'm just saying it's a different game. If you can make a fast ICE car you might not be able to make a fast EV just yet. Horsepower is only part of the issue, getting it to the ground is a much bigger issue.

Hell yeah, a 1000hp Tesla ran a 7:35!?! Extremely impressive, considering a 490hp GTR ran 10 seconds faster 13 years ago..... Ohh wait... did I say impressive? Oops

That GTR easily weighs 1500 lbs less and is designed for speed on a track. The Tesla is designed to go fast in a straight line.

Firstly, The Nurburgring is long and the battery cooling for such a long lap is difficult. The driver was driving with a soft hot foot to keep the battery cool... if it was a race saloon versus the fast grocery getter it is it would have a more capable battery cooling add-on. I could see at least 5% better time if battery temps were not an issue. Next the current factory program is 167mph or 269kph max speed. The power and aerodynamics ae capable at the design basis of 200mph or 322kph. This speed would assist in cooling as more air available provided its allowed to the coolers. A great deal of time at the RING is over 269kph and if you can only go 269kph you are giving up time. The tires are the issue with speed as the tire vendors do not have a tire that is proven that has the durability for the mass and torque of the vehicle to deal with the speed at lower pressures needed for traction. If the car was 200 to 300 kilos lighter as would be with a smaller race battery pack/SC and the interior was gutted and some CF parts were used there are dozens of seconds to gain on tire temp and a little more front downforce to apply to cure weight derived understeer. I'm sure a program with enhanced torque vectoring would make a huge difference. I'd like to see the g numbers from the run! All in all for an honest run during notarized 'Ring time its excellent. Let's see a Taycan Turbo S owner pull off a better lap with an off the shelf car. Note the Porsche Taycan Turbo time is not official, the stockness of the car was not confirmed, and the tires were likely an option tire not the standard tire. Keep the battle going! We all benefit from competition.

The driver accelerated quickly, but slowed down before turns, because steel brakes are a joke even for a short track. The Model S Plaid has no cooling problems for a hot lap lasting 7 and a half minutes.

battery cooling was not the issue, its done pikes peak just fine but its the street brakes that is using that is the issue, if it hits top speed it will overheat the brakes to quickly when it needs to slow down.

@@odisy64 It looks like the car was in reduced power mode at the end of the lap though. It was slow to reach 260kph on the last straight, way slower than when the car has full power. Batteries where overheating for sure

I can feel the weight of that thing as I sit here watching from my settee! For those who aren't aware, those tyres were actually solid rubber. If they had air in them, it would've been turned to plasma! 167 mph top speed on the final straight.
