I'm glad Misha spotted the potential in Spencer. Early on, he was not why I listened to periphery. At this point, he is why I listen. P4 is instrumentally great as always, but Spencer just makes the best of every moment. His writing is fantastic, and now, so is his performance.
@bohncm4 жыл бұрын
indeed. His singing and range has always been great but his screams were cringy back then. Now....dude is the standard for metal singers.
@dreaminginnoother4 жыл бұрын
@@bohncm His singing sounds better too now, but yeah, his screams make the old stuff hard to listen to honestly. Or at least, I was not putting my focus on him during those parts. I think Juggernaut is where the page really started to turn for him and then each album has been better than the last for him. His writing is still the most impressive part to me. Misha was right about the potential he saw.
@bohncm4 жыл бұрын
Indeed. I actually didn't know about them until clear came out but ever since the first time I heard them, I have listened to them pretty much non stop. I just recently went back and listened to P1 for the first time and he was good but his screams, for example, on icarus lives would turn most people off to the band if they weren't musicians. Goes to show how hard he worked between 1 and 2 to get the power in the screams. But yeah, most importantly how he continues to absolutely blow me away with how weird and out of the box he as well as how absolutely perfectly he compliments all of the instruments. This is the definition the the most perfectly rounded group in my very, very biased opinion.
@dreaminginnoother4 жыл бұрын
@@bohncm Totally agree with what you just said. I have described them as one of the most agile bands around. It seems there is very little they cannot do if they want to. They're an incredibly powerful unit and a rare breed. I largely credit Misha for his ability to collect talent around his concept and integrate it.

P1 is how I started discovering Periphery, but all of your albums, P1, P2, Clear, Jug, P3, P4, I love them all Misha, no exception. As long as you and the Periphery guys keep making music, I'm always here to listen and be inspired. You have no idea how Periphery had changed my life for the better :)
@DjentDragon4 жыл бұрын
P1 had monumental impact in my life for the better in such a way that's really hard to describe, and that's mainly why it's my favorite. I was in a very unfortunate and clueless situation at the time, but for some reason when I discovered P1 through a friend that completely changed. The first time experience of listening to it back then was so new and fresh for me that I bought it immediately and put it on my phone to listen to constantly. It always gave me this renewed sense of vigor that I still get even when I go back to listen to it, and it always felt weird to me since I've never met anyone else that had that kind of appreciation for that album. P1 also introduced me to this entire new wave of metal music that I had never heard of before and absolutely fell in love with over this past decade. The melodies were beautiful, the rhythms were really fun to listen to, and while Spencer's singing at the time wasn't everyone's favorite compared to previous recordings with Chris or Casey, I personally think they matched the songs very well, even if they were a bit rough. Before that, metal to me was just the Metallica radio tracks that every country folk in my town kept blasting over their car stereos with their country and pop songs I never liked at all. I still remember the day that Periphery showed up to my local venue and played P1 and ended with racecar. That was the best concert experience I've ever had in my younger years because I was finally in a crowd of people that had a passion and interest for this kind of music. It inspired me to pick up guitar and practice as hard as I could even if I put it down later due to severe carpal tunnel. So I can understand if Misha and the gang don't want to re-record it due to lack of interest, but if they do I'm insta-buying it and blasting the hell out of it like I did 10 years ago.

Juggernaut, P2 and P1 are my favorite Periphery albums tbh. Hearing P1 in 2010 really got me interested in the modern prog metal sound and recording my own riffs, and opened a lot of creative doors for me. P2 has so many memorable riffs, awesome vocals, and an impeccable mix. The songwriting for Juggernaut was next level and really well executed. It's cool seeing Misha talk about those albums and rerecording p1 stuff

I'd honestly love to hear P1 with your guys current sound. I remember hearing Icarus for the first time on 4/20/2010 when I was baked off my gourd and it blew me away. I over played that song and for that reason I feel its become my least favorite, but hearing snippets breathes new life. You hit the nail on the head. 10 years ago you were a different person. You could even argue that P1 was a different Periphery, without Nolly and Mark. And the rest of you have grown so much as musicians. I know if you remade this album ala FF7r and make it something completely different, but built on the same foundation, it'd be mind blowing. As much as I'd love to see a solo album, from any and all of you, and as hated as this album was at the time, if anything in the Periphery catalogue deserves a remake its this album. I never meant to write an essay about this album but man, this one really came to me at a time in my life when I needed it. And I know there are others who can say the same. My grandmother passed from cancer, and my mother had a mental breakdown as a result, on top of trying to nail standardized tests to get into college. There were alot of late night walks I had to take and that album was my only company. Because of that, the album is hard to listen to as it stirs up a lot of bad feels. I'd love the opportunity to listen to this album again with a different perspective. Thanks for the music you have made and will continue to make dood! You do good!

I loved P1. My favorite Periphery song is still Letter Experiment. There was something “innocent” and adventurous about the album. Not perfect by any stretch, but I find perfection to be boring at times. P1 took what all the metalcore bands were doing at that time, but took it a few steps further. At that point, I was so bored with metal, but hearing everything you were putting out back then reignited my love for it. It was exactly what I was wanting to hear at the time. I really don’t want a new edition of P1. The “rough” and “undeveloped” sound is what makes it P1. But no one would be forcing me to listen to a new version. Hopefully the original will always be there to stream.

I know it doesn't what I say because he is the one creating for Periphery and I'm the one consuming, so there will always these two different sides of the story. I got to Periphery from those random youtube recommendations where one in fifty is solid gold, and it was "Make total Destroy" from P2. I preferred it to P1 because it was far more refined an album with so much more attention to detail and the songs stuck to me closer than p1. Sure I got favorites off P1 too, I mean it just as a whole compilation. That said, Juggernaut has to be my favorite. The mood, the atmosphere and the journey through those two albums along the melody choices are what sets it apart. I do like P3 and P4 naturally. Those two feel really good in terms of flow and they provide everything for a cohesive and enjoyable album experience, moreso than the first two albums. The last two are really well made and I don't ever feel like I want to skip as song. Reptile for example was a fantastic choice to put it as opener instead of a finisher. That said, I have favorites off all albums, it's not like I prefer one specific era more than the other. All that makes me think that if you are to re-record P1 this would finally bring it to a place where it's more deserved and can shine with the quality of writing it had. Because I do have to flex my imagination in terms of "how it would sound with Spencers refinement and the production quality you're able to deliver from all other albums." HOWEVER. If you don't include Spencer's original intermezzo of "Thank you for purchasing..." in the remake, it will be a difficult sell :P

In a other side, as a composer and a kinda like mixing engineer, I understand your point of view about not listening P1. You know what's wrong in it, and don't want to feel the pain each time you heard those mistakes. Another thing I wonder is; why do you keep using your mouse to place drum hits when you have a master keyboard and certainly some pads on it to record it intuitively? When I program a drum groove to follow the notes of the guitar, the rhythm is naturally already ingrained in my right hand, so I just use the same rhythm tapping on the pad. Then quantize and doublecheck if everything sits correctly. It's all about saving time and not lose track of the creative drive :) Sometimes it's even vice versa. I tap the kick-snare pattern in first and then proceed to write around it.

I remember the Bulb demos from the btbam forum days, 2005 or so. Really interesting to hear you talk about how you feel towards P1 now. Edit: also is that donation sound 'the lick'?!

looking to build a new pc for music production. im struggling to run invasion and multiple guitar tracks (lets say 4), and a bass track with low latency without dropping audio while recording. even disabling the drum tracks and all the extra stuff, i still drop out. my budget is 1.5-2k. any recommendations on parts please?? i dont really know much about computer stuff at all so its tough picking stuff out on my own :(
