"Pretty dull" haha!! The unprocessed vocal is so well recorded/sung/time-aligned that already sounds better than the finished vocals from anything I mixed during my first 5 years! Working my way up I was given horrible recordings, and struggled so much (I was known for making miracles), that it was some pretty intensive training. But it also felt like I was struggling 90% of the time, instead of enjoying the process. I even gave up at some point and stopped mixing for a few months. Meanwhile, some of my mixes were released, and were kind of successful, so I was back in the game in no time, and at a different level. The first time I was given a real professionally recorded session, complete with production notes, and EVERYTHING PROFESSIONALLY EDITED / TUNED and ready to go, I cried of happiness! Nearly everything I tried worked, sounded good, and had a place in the mix without an insane ammount of effort/problem fixing. The whole process became easy, smooth and, best of all, CREATIVE. It all made finally sense. So fellas, don't be surprised if you try everything that Jordan does here and you don't get the same results. The source material is as important as what you do with it. Go find people that are as passionate as you are with sound engineering/producing/mixing and try to be more selective with the quality (and execution) of the music that ends up in your hands. And then, watch this video again!

What do you mean by properly recorded? they didn't have a nice pre amp and sung to close to the mic? Or you just mean they were all crappy singers.

@sonidojamon
@sonidojamon Жыл бұрын
@@barneyrubble8255 ha! If you think that a nice preamp and not singing too close to the mic is enough for a good take, then you're definitely missing the point I was making. The singer, the microphone you choose, the acoustic treatment, the preamp settings, the audio interface AD converters, the headphone mix for the singer, the recording levels, the producer's notes and guidance, the vocal comp, the editing, the tuning, the vocal tracks layering. It all comes before getting the tracks for mixing, and you're not in control of it (that is, if you're just the mixing engineer!)

This was a great video but i'm sure that these vocals have already been through much mixing already. However, i do believe this method alone can sometimes work, but it would also depend on your equipment (e.g microphone & interface) and the kind of vocals you are working with.

@@campar1043 Absolutely not lol! Please trust me, I literally do this all day every day. They have either been mixed a little already or were tracked with compression and eq. I can hear the compression on the peaks lol. A "raw" vocal track will have a rather large dynamic range 75% of the time. Especially in this genre. You can hear him go from quiet to super loud with very little change in dynamics. That's only one of the many things lol. There is nothing wrong with that. I prefer if my clients send me their work with a touch of starting eq and compression as long as they know how to use it. It's kind of like using a preset as a starting point lol. Can be a HUGE time saver! :D 100000000000% agree on the mic and preamp. They were top notch as well! :D

I'm fairly new to mixing so this has been incredibly useful, thanks RR and Jordan! Question: I often find engineers suggesting putting an LA-2A style compressor immediately after the 1176 in the chain, that they work best together, etc. I see that Jordan doesn't do that here, so I'm just wondering why. Is it simply a matter of taste? Or unnecessary? Thanks for the great content!

The cardinal sin of A/B comparison is stopping the demo to talk between variations. Auditory memory is SHORT, and we can all see you pressing 'bypass', so here's a pro tip: Select a 3-5 second loop. Say, _I'm going to loop a short section. Listen as I switch the effect in and out._ Then run the A/B a few times with NO INTERRUPTIONS. Anything you have to say can wait until AFTER the demonstration.
