Extremely valuable “how to” with Tascam 12. Clear and filled with very useful information. Thank you.

This was the exact video I needed to see. There is still many mysteries left to figure out about my T-12, but this resolved a few of them. Very cool!

I've done this but I record my full 10 track mix to a stereo mixdown, then import that mix into a new song file usually titled "song_mas" (mas short for master or mastering) on one of the stereo tracks then use the eq and compression, then record that to a new stereo mix and export that to my computer for release. This way you don't lose any tracks!
@RecordingStudio92 жыл бұрын
That’s perfectly fine. My method also allows the use of external gear.

@@RecordingStudio9 I think you forgot to mention too that your method is actually REQUIRED in order to capture any onboard EFX to file.

The vocals sound great, but one of those other tracks sounds distorted to me, especially when you have the compressor on and are recording thru 9 and 10 and not the master bus. So, yes, try the Behringer.

@recordingstudio9 -- I am a novice so just trying to learn the ropes on the Model 12. Your video made me wonder if your Master Bus Compression strategy be used for live music? That is, (a) put Channels 1-8 (Live) on SUB; (b) send SUB L/R outs into Channel 9/10 L/R Inputs, (c) use 9/10's Compressor as a Master Bus Compressor/Limiter, and (d) send 9/10's output to MAIN? Thanks. Love your videos!
@RecordingStudio95 ай бұрын
If you’re not using inputs 9/10, sure, but for live, I would use an outboard comp/limiter between the M12 outputs and the amp/speakers

Great video very helpful. Question- I think you did the final touches compression, before the stereo export function to a .wav stereo file which i then burn to a cd. If so when you finished your final touches do you record and do the stereo export function right from the main bus? hope you get my question ?
@RecordingStudio9 Жыл бұрын
Model 12, when in mixdown, meaning mixing all the 10 tracks onto the MAIN bus (pressing record while non of the channels are armed for recording) records the final mix onto tracks 11/12. Stereo Export simply combines the 2 mono WAV files into a stereo WAV file and places it in the correct sub folder.

Thank you so much for this video and all the others you made. So helpful, clear and thorough. I do have one question: in order to achieve a similar result and master my songs, so far I've been mixing down my 10 channels into the main channel, then I export the mix as a "stereo mix" and then create a new "song/track" and import said "stereo mix" on channel 9/10 to "master" my "stereo mix" using the 9/10 compressor and fine tuning the 9/10 eq (channels 1 thru 8 stay empty on that new master song/track, only using channel 9/10 and main). Would you say it is the same method more or less as physically routing the bus outs to 9/10 like you did? Or is it different and your method would be better sonically? I guess the downside is that I have to create a new song/track, but the upside is I still get to use 10 channels for the original mix. Just wondering if my method is more or less the same as yours. I do the original stereo mix fairly hot but below clipping and for the final master track, I use the 9/10 and/or main meters instead of gain for volume control. Thank you for your input and sorry for the long question. Hope I don't sound confusing, but super curious to hear your reply when you have time.
@RecordingStudio92 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Actually, I prefer your way of "mastering" a song for a few reasons. One, no D/A and A/D conversion since you are importing the stereo mix WAV file. Two, you now have 10 channels to mix. Yes, you do end up with two song projects, but if you do your mixing right, the "mastering" project will be easy. Thanks for sharing your method.

I should add that my method adds the ability to use external hardware gear in the signal chain.

@RecordingStudio97 ай бұрын
Yes, the result is the same, but demonstrating with the cable gives the viewer the idea of implementing an external compressor/limiter hardware into the audio routing chain.

@RecordingStudio97 ай бұрын
The Lexicon MX200 is an FX unit while the GA Comp 3A is a compressor. This video might help you work out how you can process them. kzbin.info/www/bejne/opuQYWajd5ybgJI After watching the video you may find that: Normally, you can connect the GA Comp 3A into the INSERT of ch 1 or 2 during recording, to add compression to the incoming audio from a mic/line. While you can send AUX 1 to the MX200 and the return to ch 7/8

Q. When not using any outboard gear in the process, what would really be the advantage of using a patch cable from the sub out into 9/10, as opposed to just recording your mix to 11/12, and then bumping it over 9/10 (or even 1/2 for even greater comp and EQ control) for mastering? Would the advantage basically be not having to run the REC button twice? Or would we also be gaining the advantage of picking up a greater analogue feel to the final product?
@RecordingStudio9 Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can record your mix onto tracks 11/12 and swap to tracks 9/10, play just ch 9/10 and adjust Comp & EQ and record again on tracks 11/12. My example also provokes the idea of using outboard analog compressor or limiter. Thanks again.
@OmegaDreyo Жыл бұрын
@@RecordingStudio9Nice and good know that have we alternate and extensible options. But was wondering still, does the patch cable method happen to also provide added analog feel to the music even with no outboard gear, since it’s being “re-run” into the analogue preamps?
@RecordingStudio9 Жыл бұрын
@OmegaDreyo the preamps are pretty clean, so not really.
@OmegaDreyo Жыл бұрын
@@RecordingStudio9 Ok, thanks! Makes sense it wouldn’t add any additional analog feel to then, if no saturation can really be achieved.
@OmegaDreyo Жыл бұрын
@@RecordingStudio9 ooh, I think I just discovered another main reason why you chose to demonstrate this EFX example with the patch cable method instead of the swap method, even without the use of any outboard gear…because the EFX actually don’t get printed as the Compressor and EQ does with the Send Point feature. Would that be an accurate conclusion?
