I've found that a lot of Japanese guitars from the mid 70's/80's to be much more effective when seeking Zappa tone. More specifically, Matsumoku guitars like Electra, Westbury, Aria II, Westone etc. Most of these guitars come with push-pull pots for coil tap, phase reversal, and even built in boost.
