I so enjoy every recycle review so they are worth waiting for. The spreadsheet is an amazing resource and you are a real treasure to our community. You shined a light on one of my very favorite drams-- Powers John's Lane. I can't imagine not having that in my cabinet. In fact, I saw it on offer online last month and ordered 4 bottles-- I've never bought 4 battles of anything. I agree Yellow Spot is a close second, but not the amazing value. I also agree that I'm slowing down on my purchases of 18+ year old bottles because although good, it is not worth the price of 3-4 bottles of John's Lane.

Great to see the return of this much-loved format, Roy! And so interesting to see the much more pronounced emphasis on value for money and good presentation in all of your comments. Yes, as often mentioned on the vPub, value is becoming more and more important as prices for 12 plus year old whiskies climb, some ridiculously. You're right, those bottles are not worth replacing, as there are just too many better value alternatives on the market. In that sense, I was surprised not to see a bottle of Loch Lomond in this video (you must be taking your time with them), except for the "Glasshouse." And, after hearing of the progress made by Glenglassaugh, I'll return to my bottle of Revival (2016 release) very soon and give it another spin around the block. I remember enjoying it a few years back, then it got swamped in the rash of young releases from all the new distilleries that have popped up recently. Oh, and one last thing: here in Germany the new Speyburn 10yo has been released at 46% ABV. Is the UK lagging behind on that? Many thanks for the reviews - as always, they're fun and informative at the same time. Cheers.

You can tell the era of the Knob Creek by the label and the bottle. That's two generations of their product ago, and 14 year olds are no longer around. It's rare but you can still find one or two close to 12 yr but just under. The good news though is that they are still about $45-$55 in the US, and every bit as good of a bargain.

I agree that there is great young whisky out there and that young can be as good as old for different reasons. However, old mature whisky has a style all of its own and can only be experienced when it is old.
@edfriday77092 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. However thinking of 8-10 years old as young may be changing with 8-12 been kind of middling aged, 15-21 been ‘mature’ and higher than that been old???
@welshtoro32562 жыл бұрын
@@edfriday7709 I think young these days is 3 to 8 years. Middle aged is 12 to 17 and old is 18+. That leaves a few gaps of course and rightly so. 10 year old whisky can be youthful and mature depending on (this is the big one) the quality of the casks. As a matter of fact I've had whisky that is well over 20 years old aged in such overused casks that it's hardly matured and still tastes young. I seriously think the quality of casks, and the decline of their quality, is the big issue in the whisky world moving forward.

@welshtoro32562 жыл бұрын
Exactly the same problem I have. The fill levels go down at the same rate and you end up finishing a mountain of bottles in a week. You should definitely put some of the single casks in the bin. Totally agree about the Powers. The best bang for buck Irish out there because, like the Japanese stuff, Irish whisky is crummy value (Yellow Spot 12 - £75). I had the Miyagikyo NAS recently and liked it but I can have two Ledaig 10's and spare change for the money. The price of whisky is becoming absurd. Glengoyne 21 is a complete rip-off these days and the rumour mill is suggesting a huge spike in some Diageo favourites. Try buying Talisker 18 right now because it's nowhere to be seen. That's set to go north of £200! The Malts of Scotland range could increase by a huge amount. Tamdhu - too expensive. Love the Glencadam 21 but quite a lot of nonsense beginning to appear from that distillery too. Roy, I completely agree with what you say about pricing. Over the last few years people on ordinary incomes have become accustomed to paying prices, fit for kings, on whisky. Three figure sums for booze. People are being taken for fools. We complain about the price of food and energy and then gleefully line the pockets of the shareholders of whisky distilleries that are every bit as greedy and rapacious. Talk about Fat Cats. Even that tasty Bowmore, which is under 10 years old, is out of order. Tasty high abv Islay NAS like Smokehead, Ileach, Scarabus, Finlaggan, etc, are all far cheaper. When I think of the excellence of the Port Charlotte range who produce great age statement whisky for cheaper. Why is a Bowmore NAS £75? Not justified. Totally agree about good whisky out there but it takes an experienced head to manoeuvre those waters and it's getting younger and younger. Quality mature whisky is slipping out of reach now. It's even tanked in the Independents which, amazingly, are becoming more expensive than the distillery ranges. Younger people coming into whisky, unless they work in Silicon Valley, will never know what a 20+ year old Islay or a quality mature sherry cask whisky tastes like. That is a profound shame for me. By the way, I had a great whisky experience in Spain recently. Check this out in the comments. I think you will enjoy it. Welsh kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3fJnIWAn9KkZ6M

what that the bottle of glengoyne 21 that you opened for me? love these reviews!
@Aqvavitae2 жыл бұрын
Indeed it was Dave, probably one of the quicker level drops in the last year, shame though as the current price hikes will mean it'll be lucky to be purchased again soon.

Prices are really getting crazy. Like you, I have always had a Glengoyne 21 on deck. I like that whisky so much. That European oak influence is wonderful. At $135 a bottle I was hording them back in the day. Now at $250 I won’t be buying it anymore :(

Agreed... but if we're not - who is? I guess there are a ton of folks out there with the money to throw at it. Cheers cato

Yoichi's 18yo is what turned me from a teenage occasional enjoyer of the novelty of heavily peated whisky into a whisky lover. I just wish my younger self realised at the time that Japanese whisky had only just started garnering international attention, and that it would become unaffordable a couple years later. I suppose I should count myself lucky that I had a friend who was clued into it early on who was excited to share it with me, so I at least got the chance to experience it.

Yes - good you got to try them while they were around and hope they kick-started a love of what whisky has to offer generally. Cheers Rick!

Great video again, wise and interesting words. Just don't wait as long before you do another. Any planned trips to Islay or any of the other Whisky Regions?

Need to get me some Cotswolds! So far both Bimber and Filey Bay have been quite impressive. Not sure how accessible Bimber will be as their whisky gets older however? Bowmore Vault Edition 1 at €70, worth a shot (I love a good Islay)? :)
@Aqvavitae2 жыл бұрын
At that price it's a cracker - less Islay and more tropical and aromatic, lovely though.
@NeilImmortal2 жыл бұрын
OK. The name "Atlantic Sea Salt" is on the nose. Lots of tropicals here. Reminds me of Bimber with more salt and peat. Delicious. Thanks for the tip!

If there's anything left at the bottom of bottles Roy,you should do infinity bottles from the different regions and leave them for a few years,Ive started doing it.
