The purchasable items work as so: 'Unlocks a journal page' unlocks a page of the book in the main menu. 'Unlocks a showdown character' unlocks a character for the multiplayer / splitscreen 'showdown mode' accessed in the main menu. They aren't used ingame in any way.

The items that say "unlocks a journal entry" does just that. You can find the journal on the main menu (it's well worth it). The items that unlock new characters give you new people to use in the Local multiplayer mode. Fun fact, you can also unlock them by winning matches. Set a low time limit and face some shite characters and you'll have them all in no time (I spent many hours on this game as a kid). Slade the Blade was always a personal fav.

I remember playing this game as a kid (Though I probably shouldn't have). I used to go to this one GameStop on an almost weekly basis to get PS2 games, and I saw this game marked "USED" for around $10. The cover made me laugh and I though it would be worth playing it, somehow convincing my mother to get it for me despite the age restriction. I suppose my introduction to the Red Dead series was the inverse of yours, and I wondered why everyone never brought this game up during discussions. I remember the game being a ton of fun and having a really good time with most of it. However, most of my deaths came from the final level, as I remember playing it over and over and just hoping that I'd get lucky enough to at least beat the game. I managed to do so, but I was confused as to what just happened. You also unlock the 'Scorpion Revolver' for the game's weird New Game Plus mode. I wish that you brought that up. Now, looking at your review, I'm wondering why you didn't talk about the multiplayer. Now that was a fun time. Each character had their own perks in that mode and it was really hectic and fast-paced. I believe you could choose what weapons could be used in that mode, a la Goldeneye 64. Also, buying those items from the in-game store allow you to unlock stuff in the multiplayer mode. Tying this small writing prompt back into RDR 1, Red Harlow and several other characters are hinted as being alive and having survived the events of 'Revolver'. Red Harlow is talked about at campfires in the Singleplayer game, with the story tellers referring to the events that happened in his life and the final events that unfolded near the end of his game. Red Harlow also appears as a playable character in the Online mode, still being voiced by the same guy from all those years back, but you have to have the correct DLC to play him. The DLC which brings Red also brings along several other characters from Revolver, like Annie Stoakes and Pig Josh. If you can fire up a GOTY version of Red Dead Redemption, try checking out the 'Outfitter' in Online to see if you can select them. As a small non-spoiler bit of trivia for RDR 2, you can customize your guns in that game. One of the customization options for revolvers brings, you guessed it, a handle that features a carving of a scorpion on it. Have fun reviewing that game and try not to rush into it. A game of that scope and measure requires some time to fully enjoy, I think.

@@non-canon7719 Who says they aren't? Folk-tales can have elements of truth to it - even nowadays we discover that some "tall-tales" have more elements of truth to them than originally thought. In the end, NONE of this is true - why fret that in a fictional universe, there are characters thought or considered to be fictional? It's all fictional, equally. That said, Revolver takes place in a much earlier time and a different place for the most part than either other game so who's to say what is and isn't true in regards to the universe? That's why they're tall tales. Canon is irrelevant.

This game was my childhood first game I 100% completed the journal entries you buy in the campaign just add backstory and stuff in the main menu. Also their are some that unlock new multiplayer maps and characters. The multiplayer is where this game shines different characters have different abilities. Only downside is some characters can only be bought/earned in certain segments of the game

This game got me into the western genre. This and Gun on the PS2 were the two western games of my childhood, then Red Dead Redemption in my early teen years and then Red Dead Redemption 2 recently. I always found it weird that everyone jumped on the bandwagon of RDR2 without playing the two earlier titles and I was there from the very beginning of the series. Also it bothers me how many weapons you can get in revolver and redemption but you only have like 3 picks from each category of weapon in Redemption 2.

I'm having an aneurysm watching some of this footage. Beating this game on max difficulty as a kid (including all the optional challenge missions) was hell as a kid. Beating the final boss in under a minute is still the hardest challenge, but is a nice satisfying cap off through mastery of the game.

This was my first Red Dead game and I honestly didn't like it much the first time around. I'd have to go back and give it a second chance, but I remember it being so ridiculously clunky, even in 2004.

I remember it being clunky too. But the atmosphere had me coming back. It had this somewhat spooky vibe as well as full on spaghetti western action. I remember when first encountering Pig Josh. When his morbidly obese carcass jumps out of that wagon with his explosive presence and his creepy laughter, I was shocked especially when I found out he could DEFLECT BULLETS, run faster than Red and explodes on impact without taking damage himself. Pig Josh kind of sums up the overall experience of the game, the creepy, the wacky and the intense action.

I played red dead revolver when it first came out and I loved the game. Gun however was what red dead redemption drew most inspiration from. Gun was like red dead revolver on steroids. Better story. Good game play. Open world and interesting side missions.

red dead revolver was my first western game when i was young and owned a ps2 hehe good game, but the boss battles maaaan were sometimes difficult

Love this game, it's one of those beauties i keep revisiting. I don't think all the levels are hard, but the general Diego one. OH MY GOD THE BRIDGE LEVEL WILL OWN YOU LIKE THERE IS NO TOMORROW, prepare to grind. Headshots feel so satisfying and easy to do un normal encounters. Oh, and melee sucks, just use the bottles in the barfight next time.

I personally loved the game, although I do agree it was a ridiculously difficult game especially with bosses like Mr. Black who was the bane of my existence, even though I’m definitely happy with the direction rockstar has headed I will definitely miss revolvers style, if I’m being honest the one thing that I would absolutely love in rdr 2 is if they added a LOT more bounties because that is easily one of my favorite things

Red Dead Revolver was my first Red Dead. It was nothing special to be honest, but still had a fun time. It wasn't anything close to something like San Andreas at the time. I couldn't have foreseen this arcade shooter becoming the juggernaut that is Red Dead Redemption 2.
